This is Bella, a one year old Giant Schnauzer puppy. She visited us for our 2 week Residency Dog Training Program. Our job was to try to gain leadership and more focus. Why? Bella has a tremendous prey drive, stronger than any I have seen in my almost 25 years of professional dog training. Combine this with a willful personality and we had a situation which normally leads to a dog running a household or finding a new home. Kudos to her owners. They love her and were determined to become her leader. We are well on the way to that becoming reality.
One note that should be made ... Prey drive is a deeply instinctive desire in dogs. It stems from survival and hunting for food. You can never eliminate or completely control prey drive. You have to manage it and find ways to redirect the behavior as best you can.
You manage it by leading. You redirect it by becoming the leader and finding games and exercises that take the edge off of the desire.
