That's unfortunate about that Archangel sketch. Because of his design, I'm always curious how every artist will depict his metal wings. I haven't stepped into the world of commissions yet, but that Nova is a solid piece and a steal for the price compared to his size and how much space was used all together.
I kinda like the Archangel sketch. It's not great, it does seem rushed, but it's not horrible. Still, a negative experience will stay with you and will overshadow even the best art, so I don't blame you for feeling bad about it.
Thank you for giving out prices for sketches, It's been years since I got one ,and used to think 100.00 was a bit too much. Now I can know the current market cost.
I've seen better sketches from a high schooler. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Hopefully he reaches out to you and tries to make amends because that's really unacceptable.
I don't think the Archangel is that bad, honestly. The arm crossing over the body does create a dark zone of the reds/blues clashing against each other and making that area a bit hard to read. The wings are rough but that seems to be sort of his style. I've looked at other work by him and it is more detailed, but I think the overall structure of the drawing is good and that right hand is with the underhand grip look is pretty cool. $250 is a bit high, maybe, but it is a full figure and in color. Definitely a lot better than a high schooler or whatever some people are saying. Just put it up for sale and if it sells for lower than you paid, at least you'll get something back.
as an artist, letting someone down with a sketch cover is my worst fear! ESPECIALLY sketch book collections. it's really up to us, as the artist, to manage expectations from what we can do to how long it will take. If I don't think I can do a solid job while the customer is at the show, it's on me to arrange shipping or something- most folks would rather do that than get a rushed product. either way, great video!
How specific you were with the artist about what you really wanted? The sketch doesn't look bad, IMO. Perhaps there were some unrealistic expectations? Other than that, why not have it graded?
Can't wait to see what sketches and signatures you get in Baltimore this year. I have a much shorter list of creators I want to get signatures from compared to my Heroes Con trip so I'm expecting to be really digging into the long boxes looking for some key pick-ups.
Man I feel you Brother. I get about 30 commissions a year. I learned I always tell them I’m leaving today even if I’m at the con for 3 days because artist do that a lot push commissions out till that Sunday if they know you will still be at the con till then and yes they are always rushed.
Ouch. That hurts. I met Koi at a con, really nice guy but that was not his best, sorry to say. Better luck at this year's con. Heard you are going with Sean from Qwerty Comics. Have fun! Can't wait to see what you get.
BRO @4:38 are you sure he really drew that? Because that looks like a 12 year old got ahold of some color pens......WOW thats seriously the WORST sketch cover I have ever seen im sorry.
Sometimes it's best to ask the artist specifically want and how you want the artwork to be and look like, but first things first you just have to think carefully and thoroughly about how cool you want the artwork to look before making any decisions to prevent from being disappointed. Nova artwork looks cool and better looking, the black and white makes the red trade dress and the red strip where the barcode is pop more. Nice review.
Don't get me started .... a certain Preacher cover artist accepted my commission request (and I paid him !) on the first day of the Montreal Con - a Friday, and I had to pester him during the last 30 minutes of the show, on Sunday, for him to rush rush rush and finish up the darn thing. Needless to say, it ended up on my "scrap pile". Like you, I'm too polite !. Sorry for the Archangel commission - you even had to pay to have it slabbed !
Baltimore is the place to get great art from some great talent. I have bumped into you a few times at Baltimore. I can understand you dispointment with that Archangel. I know you like getting commissions. I have a suggestion for you. Check out Jim Calafiore this year. I don't know if you are familiar with Jim but he can draw anything and its fantastic. Im not affiliated with him at all just a major fan. Trust me the man can do it all. It's always a Calafiore commission for me when I am at Baltimore. Enjoyed the vid. Sorry about the Archangel but the Nova is aces.
Wait, you can choose if you wanna a grade or the art label? Didn't know that! And I agree with you, it's rushed and disrespectful. Unfortunately that archangel is not great, let's just say that 😅
Maybe contact him and see if he would re-do the sketch or do another one for a discount. Most artist want to keep a good reputation and would want to make it right with you.
I remember you mentioned your horrible experience with that artist in an older video. Agreed that the archangel commission was horribly shoddy and it looks like something that wasn't worth the $250.
Sorry for the bad sketch. It's always the gamble when you give an artist free reign like that, you expect them to be creative. Not rushed and mailing it in, specially with the price you paid for it.
Oh my god 10 months for just art encapsulated books I thought my submission to them was a long wait beginning of November will be almost a year I’m not an Angel fan at all but for $250 gotta step up that detail Herb Trimpe who did Hulk 181 may he RIP 🙏 cause he’s no longer with us I missed the opportunity to get a sketch from him but he was $50 Price varies from person to person but if they’re off on the consistency from their examples by a lot they’re no $100 artist IMO 🤷🏻♂️
wow 250 for that sketch, a kid in grade school could have done that, maybe his kid did it and now you have his son/daughter first piece of graded art work, but if he did that i would have asked for my money back, the nova was nice but if you look very little detail.
Yeah, that X-Force cover does not look good. It looks very rushed. The unfortunate part of the story is how the artist handled everything. He should've been more professionally, handling his work first come, first serve. But if he had a problem getting to your book, I would've respected him more if he offered you a refund or some other solution than what he gave you.
I would've apologized, given you a partial refund and asked to finish it properly on my time. Every piece of artwork an artist sells becomes their current advertising billboard. That one failed.
I like the unique Nova and the sketch is great, used the whole book. Sorry about the Archangel, limited use of the space, uninteresting pose, poor quality of work, and then those gaudy red and blues just add to the problems. Maybe he would trade it out for work he already has done. I like the art slabs, I have not seen those before seems like a great way to protect a book, without the cost of grading.
Yeah, let's all be honest: That X-Force cover is absolute garbage. Looks terrible. The artist shouldn't have charged you $250 for that with a clear conscience.
you're too critical of the Archangel. I have a masters degree in fine art, and I could waste 45 minutes of time reasoning why the second one is actually the more cohesive piece.
Archangel has scary movie mini hands
That's what caught my eye the Deadpool baby hands

That Nova is really nice! Congrats
Show it off all over the comics net, let it go viral!
I kinda like the Archangel sketch. It's not great, it does seem rushed, but it's not horrible. Still, a negative experience will stay with you and will overshadow even the best art, so I don't blame you for feeling bad about it.
Yeah that’s what I was trying to convey here. Appreciate it!
Thank you for giving out prices for sketches, It's been years since I got one ,and used to think 100.00 was a bit too much. Now I can know the current market cost.
Glad I could help!
I've seen better sketches from a high schooler. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Hopefully he reaches out to you and tries to make amends because that's really unacceptable.

Wow I would have asked for my money back. Glad you are still able to find a silver lining instead of being mad.
looks like my high school textbook cover
Man that Archangel wings look terrify .. Guess that artist didn’t take the time to put in his real skill .. But great video

I like the Nova sketch a lot.
That does look like a pretty quick sketch.. Did he get liefeld to draw the feet?
How specific you were with the artist about what you really wanted? The sketch doesn't look bad, IMO. Perhaps there were some unrealistic expectations? Other than that, why not have it graded?
That nova really is cool. Oh man, the wings on archangel look like something I would have don’t in 3rd grade. The rest of him looks cool.
I said damn bro the first time I saw it, and I'll say it again. Damn bro......
Can't wait to see what sketches and signatures you get in Baltimore this year. I have a much shorter list of creators I want to get signatures from compared to my Heroes Con trip so I'm expecting to be really digging into the long boxes looking for some key pick-ups.
I feel your pain bro... Did you mention Alex Saviuk? He's one of my favorite Spider-Man artists!
I did. May commission a sketch in the future.
Man I feel you Brother. I get about 30 commissions a year. I learned I always tell them I’m leaving today even if I’m at the con for 3 days because artist do that a lot push commissions out till that Sunday if they know you will still be at the con till then and yes they are always rushed.
My friends were in P town all last week and last weekend. Did you go?
Ouch. That hurts. I met Koi at a con, really nice guy but that was not his best, sorry to say. Better luck at this year's con. Heard you are going with Sean from Qwerty Comics. Have fun! Can't wait to see what you get.
Great video! I dont blame you about being disappointed with the sketch. It definitely looks rushed
Scott hanna is an artist you should seek. Under 200 for thigh and up with tons of detail
you can check my Art covers and its free the only problem is the Origin... where it's from...
I would pay $250 for an Alex Ross sketch.
BRO @4:38 are you sure he really drew that? Because that looks like a 12 year old got ahold of some color pens......WOW thats seriously the WORST sketch cover I have ever seen im sorry.

Crappy Archangel for that price and the time.....you should find his page and post your cover with a tongue lashing and bad review....fan page too.

I agree with you completely... I am definitely no artist and even I think I could draw something better...

The Archangel drawing is a little bit weird to slab
Wait, you can choose if you wanna a grade or the art label? Didn't know that!
And I agree with you, it's rushed and disrespectful. Unfortunately that archangel is not great, let's just say that 😅
That Nova sketch is 🔥! The Archangel is not my cup of tea. Agree with your assertion about is looking “rushed”. Definitely colored outside the lines…
Maybe contact him and see if he would re-do the sketch or do another one for a discount. Most artist want to keep a good reputation and would want to make it right with you.
Nova cover looks good, Uncanny cover not so good, especially for the price paid.
Ouch $250 that was way too much for a rushed job.
I remember you mentioned your horrible experience with that artist in an older video. Agreed that the archangel commission was horribly shoddy and it looks like something that wasn't worth the $250.
All I can say is if you're that disappointed in the X-Men scratch cover sell it. I would if I wasn't happy. That's just my opinion.
Damn!...I'll do an much better arcangel for half that price!...thanks for sharing and stay safe!
Sorry for the bad sketch. It's always the gamble when you give an artist free reign like that, you expect them to be creative. Not rushed and mailing it in, specially with the price you paid for it.

I could’ve drawn you that for $20 Lmao
Dang the archangel is really disappointing! I would raise hell, especially for 100 bucks.
Yeah that arch angle..sucks...250 for that?...he owes you a free sketch...
wow 250 for that sketch, a kid in grade school could have done that, maybe his kid did it and now you have his son/daughter first piece of graded art work, but if he did that i would have asked for my money back, the nova was nice but if you look very little detail.
Look up Lorinzo Lizana, you will NOT be dipappointed.

His hands a smaller than Trump's hands 😂
You got cheated on the Archangel.
Tell me about it!
I like the unique Nova and the sketch is great, used the whole book. What is he reaching for?
There is no sound my friend.
Sure there is - must be on your end.
@@LongboxLoveAffair nope your right. Not sure what happen. The ad had sound then the video didn't. Closed out and came back and it did. Thanks.
@@Jondoe297. glad it works now!
Yeah, let's all be honest: That X-Force cover is absolute garbage. Looks terrible. The artist shouldn't have charged you $250 for that with a clear conscience.

you pay a person for a job they should deliver, that sketch is not worth $250
That second sketch is garbage. Looks like he colored it in with cheap markers and a mature talent level. You may not disparage but I will: yuck!
I am sry
That’s a terrible archangel! That’s just a outline with color
I've seen 3rd graders do better artwork than that Archangel....
Not my cup of tea for either sketch
Man that sketch is..... bad 😬
Awful, bummer.
