Making Durban style Lamb Dhal Gosht - Lamb with lentils

- Lamb dhal gosht is a spicy, rich and hearty lamb stew that uses lentils (Yellow split peas and Biryani Dhal also know as black mansoor dal), perfect with rice or roti or bread on a cold and rainy day!
Ingredients:
1.5kg lamb (will feed approximately 5-6 people)
Marinade:
2 tsp steak and chops
1 tbsp Worchestshire sauce
1/4 cup oil
1 tsp crushed ginger and garlic
For Dhal Gosht:
1/4 cup oil
1/2 cup biryani dhal (soaked overnight)
1 cup pea dhal, boiled with 1/2 tsp salt
1 onion, grated
1 tbsp crushed ginger and garlic
2 medium tomatoes, grated
1 onion sliced for braising at the end
1 tbsp rama for braising at the end
A small bunch fresh thyme
2-3 sprigs curry leaf
Biryani mix (fennel seeds, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, star anise, elaichi) - approximately a handful
2 tbsp mixed masala
1 tsp hurdee
1 tsp garam masala
1 tsp dhania powder
1 level tsp rough salt (adjust to own taste)
1 lt water for cooking out meat
Handful dhania for garnish
Handful spring onions for garnish

Mrs Devi I love dhall gorsh, just the last part, I love to try that out, I normally don't add water when cooking, but I figured why my food sticks to the bottom, after cooking it in low heat, then when heat raised up I still don't add water, so now I know, see I'm learning, thank you afain6, I think I'm up to date with watching everything, I don't eat deserts certain ones yes, and same with biscuits,thank you Mrs Devi stay bkessed, can you please cook pulley curry I don't know if spelt correct but it has mango, and brinjals, they making during the prayer I think not sure

Mrs Devi I'm making this tomorrow, I marinated my meat but I don't have Winchester sauce, and I don't like lentils, so 2 ingredients missing, but I'm sure taste will be fine, well all that I did according to recipe was always a hit,
Let us know how it goes. The recipe should still work with the dhal only, it will give it a nice thick gravy.

Hi. Yes the marinade helps add flavour depth to the curry and tenderize the meat. If you are pushed for time you can marinate on the day instead of overnight.

Mrs Devi I have made this twice, and being so cold I added gandra beans which I was fortunate to get, made roti and I made it slightly hotter then, I wanted to know about liver, I'm not sure if it's ox liver or sheep, then I also like kidneys, which I normally make with onions chillies salt and pepper, I also don't know if you ever used the 3 bean by koo its has chick peas, black beans and I think it's sugars beans, I make a salad with this, also there's turkey pieces to make as a curry, Mrs Devi these are all part of my diet, it's all off cuts, chicken neck, chicken feet all that is good for me, Ima it bored with my style, and please remember tripe Mrs Devi don't forget ❤️
Hi Cynthia. Yes we won’t forget about tripe, hoping to get some soon. The liver we use for our liver recipe on the channel is lamb liver. Must I send the link to the video. Pranesh enjoys his 3 bean salad made with those cans from Koo, very nice!
I normally don't follow the last step of braising. Is that optional?
Yes that is optional. It brings a pop of flavour in the end but can always skip that step.
I like you to make tripe, I don't know how to cook that,
Yes we went to buy tripe last month when we were out shopping but the shop we use didn't have stock so when we get it we will definitely make it for the channel.

When making breyani is ghee not a must usually I only use ghee
Hi we don't really do that but ghee would give the biryani that extra flavour. We will give it a shot!

Lovly dhal gorse rec. I make it at least twice a month. But don't add blCk dhall it troubles my husband stomach. I use oil dhal pea dhall only. Comes out nice a. Thick
Also don't braise frm da top it comes out perfect. Serve with basmathi rice shambles an papad
