    Looks like they got it right after its’ trip back to the factory. I still prefer a da revolver for ccw, and for belt carry a 3 inch mid frame revolver is perfect. I have found that da rapid fire is more accurate than slow sa fire.you use the rhythm of recoil and fire as the revolver recovers on target .looks like you experienced the same

    Edit…I found a real nice used 19 carry comp last month. And just got some new Altamont grips (round butt to square butt. These are real nice and fit my hand excellently!
    It looks like a real nice revolver but the price tag is just outrageous, like everything else in the gun industry. Hopefully it will come down in price but I doubt it.

    I’m glad to see that you got to run it a little bit. Please forgive me as you very likely already know, swapping out the trigger return spring for a 12 pounder significantly lightens the pull while still maintaining the leaf spring hammer drop weight at full tension. I’ve done this on a few of my smith & Wessons and it turned great guns into phenomenal guns instantly. Costs about 15 bucks and takes about 15 minutes to drop in. As stated you likely already know this so my comment might be more valuable to your viewers than to you personally. Keep up the good work.

    Outstanding review, very interesting revolver, I may have to consider an acquisition, I bet it will smooth out with dry fire and shooting. Oh I fully understand the GLOCK residual slime feel. When I handle or shoot mine the only thing that helps is to pull out a classic pistol or revolver, 1911 or something like the PPK or Colt 1908 or 1903 pocket guns as an example, older S&W OR COLT revolvers too. Then all is right again.

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep. It takes a classic steel frame firearm to scrub that Glock all the way off your hands.

    Just managed to catch up with all 3 chapters. Great job once more, Howard, very interesting, learned a lot of new things again. You put a lot of time and effort in it, much appreciated. Also, the idea of "retiring" old firearms is something I appreciate very much. It's about respect. We can still carefully enjoy them from time to time, like opening a bottle of good wine from earlier years. How nice is that.

    Excellent Review and Shooting! Glad that your new S&W M19 Carry Comp is a Tack Driver!
    You may have gotten off to a rough start with it, but in the end, I believe it has proven itself worthy of service.
    Glad you got the "Glock" off your hands, but since it's your duty weapon I suppose you can't
    bury it in the back yard any more, except maybe when you go on vacation.

    Good video. I'm a little disappointed in S&W for such a heavy trigger pull. Regardless of the smoothness of the pull most people would shake like a dog trying to pass a peach pit with an eleven lbs trigger. Blessings

    • @nathanlambshead4778
      @nathanlambshead4778 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to disagree with that. Although I prefer a lighter trigger also, the smoothness makes all the difference. Having scratchy stages while pulling back a double action hammer is worst than a heavy but smooth action. In my experience anyway.

    I found with mine that the port really steps out with the 158 grain .357’s. Makes it very easy to shoot. Much less recoil than with the 3 inch 686 with the same ammo.

    Look up TK customs for that revolver , they will get rid of that lock and those mom parts and give u a trigger job ! With that being said ! I think ur revolver is a good looking pistol with a certain cool factor , and I was considering purchasing one but 😂 what kills it for me is the trigger lock 🔐 the finish , the MIM parts , the drilling completely thru the top strap and S&W quality of late , plus a hefty price tag ! For me I will spend a couple of hundred more dollars and find an older one that will just go up in value , great shooting by the way , I really enjoy ur videos !

    Very good review. Carried an M9 for 22+ years and felt confident in it, but it's hard to beat a Smith and Wesson revolver. Now that I don't work for my uncle anymore, revolvers are my everyday carry.
    FYI- I bought a 629PC a few years ago. The barrel was canted so it went back for warranty repairs. Also bought a model 29 that went back twice. Neither of them should've passed QC, but both were repaired without a problem. Thanks for the video!

    It's interesting, I have a snub nose .38 that I honestly struggle to shoot accurately with, but my Bersa Thunder .380 or Glock 26 in 9mm I can shoot relatively quickly from the draw and more accurately. I suppose it's a matter of training more than anything. But I've always felt the snubby (while super easy to carry) was for short range to point blank duty, beyond that you're really not safe to assume you'll hit your target. I do love my Taurus 65 that I picked up out of the used gun counter of my local shop about a year ago for a steal. Really a fun gun to shoot and easy to reload on the range without fiddling around and having to load 15 round magazines, etc. Good video series.

    Gave my comment some thought, the Carry Comp is the modern version of the 19. And I agree with you, it just isn't what it was. But if I was forty or fifty years younger, I might not know the elegance of the S&W revolvers without the -dash-. Functionally, it passes muster and will probably last a lifetime. That is a fact, my opinion is the differences reflect the economic goals of today. Of course, I thought the joke at the end was funny. But then, I don't own a glock.

    Nice shooting, HR, and i am SO pleased that the final shot qualified the Carry Comp as a certified Tack Driver. I also laughed, nodded my head in agreement, and GREATLY appreciated your closing Glock remarks. And I’m certain the Carry Comp will be an entirely successful part of your EDC rotation, even if its panache isn’t quite as visible as Combat Magnums,’ for many decades; it’s - positively - a very fine and eminently practical revolver, which should serve well for generations.
    Do you plan routinely to load the top=tier .357 magnum JHPs? I ask because (for some years now) I have been using HOT - usually Buffalo Bore - 38 Special +P’s in my 2.25 inch barrel SP101 and my 4.0 inch barrel GP100’s (however, when I rarely carry my five inch N Frames, I generally load 158 and 125 grain .357 magnums). My thinking is potent +P’s will do the job and both the recoil and the acoustic signature will be significantly reduced.
    Enjoy the Carry Comp; fwiw, I would feel entirely comfortable with it in ANY non-LEO/security situation.

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven’t decided on a carry load yet. For years I’ve carried my K-frame magnums with Remington 125 grain .357 Golden Saber. That’s a mid-range magnum load that hits a little harder than a .38 +P, but it doesn’t batter the revolver (or the shooter) like full-power ammo. Unfortunately, I’m not entirely sure that load is still made. Corbon, I believe, has something similar, so I might look into that.

    • @roykiefer7713
      @roykiefer7713 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hrfunk
      Remington’s likely discontinuation (and I confirmed that was probably factual on several internet sites) of their 125 gain, .357 magnum, Golden Saber (ammunition and projectiles) is really disappointing. For decades, that was my unusual magnum option and I believe it remains a VERY reliable, accurate and effective load.

    HR,
    Really good review of the Carry Comp revolver. Just a couple of thoughts. For the front sight, you might try putting some red paint or red fingernail polish (check with your wife about that one) on the front sight. To lighten the action, get a Wolff spring kit for S&W K,L, and N frames. They're easy to install and cost about 15 dollars. They will make the trigger pull just about what you would like. That's all I've got today. Keep up the good work.

  • @harrycallahan692
    @harrycallahan692 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Many recommend that for shorter barrel revolvers your results are better with lighter bullets that use fast burning powders. Have you heard of this? If you re-load I've had great accuracy by using better quality bullets like Nosler, Hornady, or Speer. Those powder coated lead bullets come from suppliers that use lead with no consistency in Brinell. Would you agree?

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the faster burning powders are more efficient in shorter barrels than slow burning powders.
      I have loaded .357’s with all of those bullets and I tend to like Hornady XTP’s and Nosler JHP’s the best. I don’t think I’ve ever used a powder coated lead bullet but I’ve used many of the hard cast variety.

    Wash the Glock off? I know the feeling! I'd practice with my issued Glock 22 and then reward myself by shooting my 1911 off-duty gun. It's hard to say how much the comp or Magna-porting helps, but you sure were smooth on that multiple adversary drill. You were quick, the side-to-side transition was smooth, and you didn't throw anything high by firing a follow-up shot while still recovering from the recoil of the previous shot. So the extra cost of the compensator seems to be worth it.

    Comment: I have handled two M19 Classics side by side in gun store and one double action felt very tight and the other felt a lot lighter and easier. I’ve found mixed comments on that from other youtube channels. Does not sound like the factory is necessarily consistent.
    Question: after putting hundreds of rounds through it at any one time before cleaning, have you suffered any cylinder rotation failures as hickok.45 did in his first review of the M19 Classic? Some commentary had said that buildup around the new ball and detent lockup on the cylinder crane causes this.

    Mr. Funk, how does the performance center trigger pull compare to stock S&W triggers? Do you think the additional cost to upgrade to a PC version is worth the added cost?

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The PC trigger is as smooth out of the box as the older revolvers are after many thousands of cycles. That’s really what you’re getting with an action job. Unfortunately, the Carry Comp’s trigger is also heavier. The springs in the new revolver might eventually relax to the point where the pull-weight is reduced. If so, that will take some time. As to weather the PC revolvers are worth the additional cost, that is a question each buyer must make. For me, I’m glad I bought the Carry Comp.

    You can lower the double action trigger pull to about 7.5 lbs. by changing the trigger rebound spring to a 10 lb one. The factory spring is overkill at about 14 to 15 lbs. Realistically due to weight, size, capacity and cost it's not a practical choice for concealed carry.

      S&W changed the lock-work of their revolvers several years ago. Since then, it seems that reducing the mainspring power is more likely to induce misfires. As far as realistic/practical carry goes, I’ll say that when I opt to carry this revolver I don’t feel particularly vulnerable to attack.

The tolerances of most parts allows for drop in install, that being said even with identical parts, some new revolvers will have better actions than others. Most newer Smith and Wesson L, K and N frames will benefit from switching to an 10 or 11 lb. rebound spring. A small amount of Lubriplate thin grease works well on the rebound slide after polishing. Most revolvers are "tack drivers". Think about it, the barrel is fixed. even if the sights are off, the bullet will fly true each time. There is also no mass, i.e., the slide, moving back and forth to throw off recoil management. Lastly, the relatively heavy DA pull forces you to stay on target longer and provides less strength to your wrists through the trigger pull - meaning you HAVE to pull the trigger straight back to the rear.

      I’m not sure there has ever been a credible study to determine that. I've owned one Glock my entire life, and it was only because I gave my son a pristine Model 66-1 4" last year, and he insisted on giving me a gun (19 Gen 5 MOS) in return. He already has it back. After 1 range trip, I'd had enough Glock to last a lifetime, and even my Nighthawk Custom 1911 has failed to remove the taint from my hands, and the disgust from my psyche. I'm still laughing at the ending of this video, though!
    I'm going to be a pain in your backside and again point you towards the Barnes TAC-XPD 125 grain all copper hollow point, rated at 1200 FPS in a 2" barrel. You'll get about 1250 or so out of your carry comp, and you'll be surprised by the low recoil. I switched to those from 125 grain 357 Golden Sabres, and they are fairly comparable as far as recoil is concerned, but I doubt you'd get more than 1100 FPS (if even that) out of a snubby with the GS rounds. I haven't seen them for quite some time, but I still have a hundred or two rounds of it laying around, just in case I get desperate for 357 ammo, lol. They're great in a 4", IMO.
    Sounds like a few Wolf springs and you're a happy camper. Nice to see a happy end to a story that began so disappointingly!

    Wash that Glock right out of your hands! LOL. I bet that gun would be even more of a tack driver with good ammunition. Odd that they would load it to 38 Spl levels and call it magnum. I don't know if you do your own hand loads, but XTP bullets do make inexpensive components for what they are. They are only about twice the price of the cheapest stuff I've seen out there which I wouldn't put through one of my firearms. Maybe I'm a bit of a snob!
    I don't know if the springs will lighten up with use or not. On my 66-8, I did install a lighter spring kit. Then I started getting excessive light strikes. So I restored the original main spring and also installed a longer firing pin. A belt and suspenders approach if you will. I did leave in the lightened trigger return spring. My 3" 629-5 pre-lock has about the best trigger I've ever had on anything. I would love to pull a Performance Center trigger to see what that's like.

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an issue with these newer revolvers in the spring kits. It is not uncommon to have light primer strikes. For that reason, I am going to keep the factory springs in this revolver. Still, thanks for the suggestion!

      @@hrfunk One thing I discovered doing some research into the possibility of using small rifle primers in place of small pistol primers is that some companies do use thicker cups in the rifle primers. CCI 450 primers are a lot different from the 500/550 primers. Given the current climate, maybe S&W is going for an extra hard wack on the primer for reliability. That is of course just speculation on my part. I have also seen factory new ammunition where the primers were not fully seated. The firing pin can seat them the rest of the way without setting them off.
