Inside the mind of an ENTJ! How Extraverted Thinking (Te) combines with Introverted Intuition (Ni)

  • Welcome to the ENTJ podcast!
    What's it like inside the mind of an ENTJ? How does it FEEL to be an ENTJ? Is this even the right question to ask?
    In this video, I introduce the two dominant 'cognitive functions' that an ENTJ uses to interact with and make decisions in their world: Extraverted Thinking (Te) and Introverted Intuition.
    Should I make more videos about ENTJs? Let me know in the comments below!

    ENTJ here - in elementary school I wrote 150 letters to my principal, all with different suggestions on how the school could be improved. I agree with the constant ability to find inefficiencies being both a blessing and a curse

      Hahaha what a classic ENTJ thing to do! 😅 I can relate - starting a meeting job and after two weeks walking up to my boss with all the things I though needed to improve…
      Didn’t work to my advantage at all hahaha
      But… five years later, all those things were fixed… I was right haha

    I’m an ENTJ and agree. Let’s say I’m going to the supermarket. By the time I’m leaving I already thought the route I’ll be driving, which path I will take on the grocery store to quickly finish and defined if afterwards I need to go somewhere else or go home.
    My girlfriend is an ENFP and she’s nothing like this hahaha she gets easily distracted and is in comparison to me quite indecisive. Still, our relationship is quite complementary. She tells me I put her life in order and to me, and I feel I enjoy having some chaos in my life :)

    Great explanation. My partner is an ENTJ and what I love about him the most is how his mind works. I'm constantly amazed by it. When people say INTPs are the most intelligent type, I say have you met an ENTJ. The ability he has to predict the future from what makes sense from the facts is truly incredible. It had me hooked not long after I met him. He has predicted many things correctly which is also great when I go to him with my anxieties about the future as he always has the answers that others don't seem to be mentioning. One example is with where I live and climate change. People are going on about flooding as we are 1m above sea level. I said I think we should move away and he said don't worry they are going to build a dam. I looked it up and it's true but hardly any of the news stories are solution-focused - they are just trying to scare us. There's so many things he says and I'm like how can you be sure and proceed to butt in to find logical inconsistencies. But then he is right 99% of the time!!

      My dad was an intp and I am entj. Sometimes I went to him to see what he thought of certain things. He was like a ground in a way just to see if I saw correctly or if I needed to look further into so my lense was accurate. I see a ton of patterns or where I think politics around world going. Or like you were looking into global climate change. I used to try to predict 50 years into the future on climate see what it be like. At the time I was farming when I was 19 but wanted to try predict what happen in future. I would not worry about global warming too much I think for most part there is a economic political agenda I saw almost decade or 2 ago that more concerning. If look into history. I think world changing but it wont happen fast but political I be more concerned about that than climate change or seas rising. I used to live a year or 2 ago near ocean. I was 20 feet from ocean waters and had a dock. I wouldn't have worried about sea rising much. We got a while. I think there always solutions to problems that will come up but my advice be where you want to live. If it's the ocean then enjoy it. Enjoy the moments

    There are a whole set of problems and challenges that female ENJT's encounter in the world. We are 1% or less of the population. I have heard that an ENTJ woman is more rare than INFJ's. So as women, we are expected to be empathetic, nurturing, emotional, etc. Since understanding or paying much attention to our feelings is very difficult and uncomfortable for us, it is very hard to understand the emotional impact our words and actions have on other people, especially feeling type women. My INFP adult daughter comes to me with a problem, my instinct is to solve it. Jump into action to fix the issue! She hates that! She wants to be heard and empathized with. She wants to yak and yak about the problem ad nauseum. I have had to learn to hear her out and then ask permission to help her if she wants my help . Maturity and personal insight as we grow older is helpful for working on the weaker parts of our personality. I am getting better!

      Yes! Awesome insights - it's so important not to hide behind our strengths, but to also develop our weaknesses as an ENTJ. I think it's easier being an ENTJ male due to social expectations... much harder to be an ENTJ female!

    Fun fact my bf is ENTJ, I am an INTJ and when I was looking for a partner I went on dates with different mbti types and to be honest was annoyed by most of them. I know it sounds a bit harsh but it was mainly because they didn't match my intelligence or they were not enough ambitious for me. Well this is not the case with ENTJs, they lean more to workaholism than laziness.
    Downsides they can be super harsh at times. They see emotional expression as weakness.
    Upsides they value loyalty, will want you to succeed in your career, are focused on improving themselves and people around them.

      @TeNiPersonalityGrowth  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@LucidAchievement I was a bit of a loser for a few years in high school (13-14). I had a group of friends, but I wasn't the leader and didn't think of myself as respected member of the group. I used to spend some time with them, then other times by myself (as I didn't want to be in an uneven relationship... I didn't want to have to rely on others)... perhaps an idea that "I was not good enough/deserving of love an acceptance (as you said).
      At the same time, at my church community, I was the leader and I felt a stark contrast across these areas of my social life.
      At this time (16/17) I had to really develop my CONFIDENCE. That was huge for me. I started being more popular in both settings and today I have a lot of friends and this really is a distant memory. I had severe acne at the time.. and in some ways this forced me to ensure that my confidence was intrinsic, not relying on external factors.
      I think that once I developed my confidence, did I start to struggle with the 'I am bad, rude, intimidating' part (that kinda came from confident Te)... It was a confusing time, because my intentions were always positive, but people didn't always receive me that way. This lead me to develop my Fi (I made a video on this exact topic).

    Advice for anyone who works with, is friends with, or is partners with an ENTJ: appeal to their sensibility.
    Logic and rational aren’t cold - they’re a necessary part of maintaining structure. If you want an ENTJ to hear you out, communicate with them not so much expressing your feelings on a matter, but how you think something could get done better to achieve a desirable outcome.
    I think what frustrates ENTJ the most is having roadblocks/obstructions on the way to complete something. Ever been in the car with an ENTJ driving? They want to know where they’re going promptly. They will rage at slow, poor driving.
    If you’re the one driving, they will judge you by your driving and the way you get somewhere. Did you take the long way? Why? Are you swerving lanes? Are you paying attention?
    That is an example and can be applied to other ways ENTJs judge others. They look through a lens of “it’s obvious that…”
    Being an INTJ, I gain the respect and gratitude from ENTJs I worked with. But outside of work, they see my iN (muted wizard mind) mixed with bottom extraverted sensing (clumsy kid) and I’m their worst nightmare. Ditzy airhead in lalaland to the max. They’re like, “how can someone so effective and intelligent” be so dumb and clumsy?
    Just seeing that play out gives them a headache. They can’t make sense of it and it hurts their souls 😂

    Here's an interesting topic to discuss. Relationships about ENTJs. More on the so called "Golden pairs" like the INTP and even the INFP (In some sources). Also an interesting one what it would feel like to be with a relationship with another ENTJ, would it be cooperation or war?
    Edit: Grammar check

    • @TeNiPersonalityGrowth
      @TeNiPersonalityGrowth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey! Great idea :) Thanks for the reply! I think if an ENTJ breaks off a relationship, it's because the other person was not so creative/inspiring (we got bored)... but if we get broken up with, it's because we are too intense and forceful! An ENTJ might need to look for a relationship that can withstand (or even appreciate) the intensity, while also offering them insight/perspective to grow and achieve their goals.

    • @gerbearneronero9748
      @gerbearneronero9748 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      On point! This can also lead to why the ENTJ-INTP is always referred to as the golden pair. INTPs are not really that forceful to other people (Though usually, they force themselves). An INFP is more lenient on feelings and emotional creativity (Imagination). ENTJ-ENTJ relationships are an undying flame, but usually, it breaks off to cut their losest or to settle their differences and move on for the better good.

    • @TeNiPersonalityGrowth

      Hey! Thanks for your comment here :)
      One of the issues (I think) with MBTI is the lack of an objective standards to base our definitions on! What exactly is Te? Who defines it? Is the definition malleable over time?
      This is a problem with all philosophy/psychology, which (unlike science) cannot easily rely on empirical data to verify theory.
      Here's is how Jung discusses it (extract):
      www.personalitycafe.com/threads/jungs-description-of-the-extraverted-thinking-type-te-dominant.95608/

    • @isabella16939
      @isabella16939 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TeNiPersonalityGrowth Yep. So many definitions out there overcomplicate this by giving us anecdotes instead of its actual root definition, which is why this MBTI thing is now slippery af. I'd recommend watching the definition of cognitive functions from this channel "Objective Personality" (if you haven't already). They have lots of videos on this, but separate videos. I promise those videos will make this all less slippery.
      "This type of man gives the deciding voice-not merely for himself alone but also on behalf of his entourage-either to the actual objective reality or to its objectively orientated, intellectual formula."
      ^^This is what I found from the personality cafe site, which is very true. So it's less about what works for the person (Ti), but also what works for the people around him (Te). For example, I'm right now trying to get our definition of Te to be on the same page. To me, it's not just about what Te means for ME, but also what it means for the people around me (YOU). We're literally doing Te right now, to my understanding of its simplified definition. Not saying everyone who's done this have a dominant Te, because everyone does every cognitive function. However, to people with Te dom, this is like their drugs that they can't control, which is why they're stereotyped as bossy (just an anecdote, so don't take it seriously).

I’m extremely hard on myself but I do better than everyone with sharp learning and adapting, finding inefficiencies to correct, and going beyond a certain minimum line of understanding. Where I lack I improvise and assume with common sense guiding me, that’s how I’ve gone so far without medication, but it’s still hell. Being bored magnifies the pain of my neglected Fi, always overworking my Te and neglecting a very crybaby Fi that wins whenever I’m alone. Everyday is my breaking point and yet I hate talking about it or receiving sympathy even if it’s well meaning. I trust nobody or the validity of my own feelings even though its just natural, and the cowardice to accept me and relax for once without perfectionist judgement is all self imposed. Ive been complaining and being a drama queen finally freely though, hasn’t solved anything of course and makes me feel helpless but at least im slowly conquering my other worries of just being myself. Especially making long ranty paragraphs like this is something I’m going to accept even if brain is like “this isn’t necessary for others to witness this helpless side of me”

    I’ve been enjoying your videos. I recently took the mistyping quiz five times and received XNTJ and ENTJ (after spending two hours mulling over the questions to better assess how I express my functions throughout different life stages and environments). I think this is invaluable to really understanding the specific cognitive processing patterns vs. just relying on MBTI type code, which is more behaviorally focused. I’m currently in the process of professional cognitive typing and preliminary feedback is ENTJ or ambiverted INTJ.

      A strong Ni ENTJ could come out as an INTJ for sure! Key difference would be how long it takes you to take action. INTJs tend to take action at a 99% or greater chance of success (they spend more time strategising with Ni), while an ENTJ will be like... 80-85% chance and then just fix the mistakes as they go in the 10-15% of the times that does not work out.

    This was so strange...haha, yes this is how I see the world. I once asked my INTJ friend how they organize the world and asked them, so, how do you organize the problems to be solved. He was like I don't necessarily see the world as a series of problems... I normally wait and see how I feel first, then I look for a logic string to pull on and then work it out. I was like...what? If you don't know what the problems are first...wait, feelings? We will deal with those after the problems are fixed so that we can FIX THEM. Yeah, we are like little robo calculators, but our Ni really does bring us back to the world since we are using it to navigate. I liked this, it is scary to hear other ENTJ's describe things that I have felt alone in, but this was great!

    Hey, I wrote a commenter before asking if there're some record of lazy entjs because I think I'm one, what seems anormal, like I spent a lot of time learning it all and I identify my self with almost everything with this exception. And I think that I'm Asperger, I'm working in the diagnosis, what can be the reason (we have low energy (I eat healthy, take my vitamins)). But you answered my comment asking if I had being throw some trauma, and I really had. What I think that I already heard that's also normal for entj and it's definitely for Aspergers. But it would be so nice if you make a video about this específic tema and maybe also depression on us like what the possible reasons from the MBTi perspective or how it manifests on us as well what to do to about, as well about the comum meadle life crises (like when you arrive where you wanted but then you're not sure if this was really what you wanted actually, you just followed the flow to success, and then you see your self suroused by really hard work for the rest of life. And if we are even able to ever know what we want truly once that we arrive there. Like because I already start to feel this emptiness in my breast imagining me there overworked but I still don't see any other option more attractive or that have a bigger chance of make me happy at the same time. I see my self comiting to a lot but yeah like when I imagine my self there where is my real dream to be actually, I'm not sure if is this what I really want (to really be there because I will comiting my self with really a lot of work like unhealthy, I think. (Sorry I over repeated my self because I edited and ended up like this and I have to go now).I never sow nothing about this entj laziness/trauma connection or any laziness at all as said. I see that I can take long to finish and feel me ready to full fill my final desires because I'm preparing my self to it like studying, collecting all the data,..., Making my self a real expert for the subject that the people trust on me (as me my self) about. (But I don't think that I'm a intj I'm definitely extroverted (even though like I also have the normal look alike introversion typical of entj like high selection in company, or preference to be alone). But yeah it would be nice if you could at least give me a link with some fount about :)..

    Was going to ask how to further develop the function (Te) as a Ti user, but then again its not natural for one use/utilize shadow function without it being draining. Makes me wonder if one can ever reach a point where the shadow functions will be less draining or is it hardwired in the brain least required energy are the main functions? i.e in your case can you ever reach a point where Ti all day wont drain you? xD

      I like to think it's possible to develop inferior functions - I know I certainly have! For me, getting good sleep is really important to accessing them or I default to my dominant function (in probably an unhealthy way)
      For a Ti users to turn it in Te, I think it's linked with confidence. Step out and make the first move even if you don't know all the answers and trust in yourself :) Anxiety isn't really something I experience too often (if at all) as an ENTJ and I think that's linked to Te. Te has no time for anxiety.

      Hello there ISTJ :)
      Your cognitive functions are SiTe (Introverted Sensing and Extraverted Thinking)
      So, you have Te as a cognitive function (like ENTJs), but it’s your secondary function! So, while you do ‘act’… you first prefer to perceive (take in information) - the way you do this, is through Si (introverted sensing)
      In some ways, you are actually a perceiving type - as your first function is about perception, not action… but since your first EXTROVERTED function is a judging function (and extroverted functions are what people see) the MBTI interpretation puts you as a ‘J’ type (ISTJ)
