    Hi I'm 77 years old and my grandson is helping me write this. I must say looking at all these clips take me back to a very long time ago when I was a young man and we had to pay to watch television. Looking at this takes me back to I believe 1967 when this great actor was this very well done/performed character and I remember watching Power of the Daleks ever so clearly when it's one and only broadcast was. I'd like to thank you Mr. Humphryes for this video because you've just reminded me of what was a very fun three years with a certain Cosmic Hobo and in my book he is the best Doctor Who ever. I stopped watching after january 1989 and ever so ironically the show ended not even a year later. I made that decision because I knew that nothing after that story would be good

      It just goes to demonstrate that one is never too old to make errors of judgement! Deciding, at the age of 50, to forego the stories of Season 26 was robbing yourself of some of the best episodes of 80's Who. 'Curse of Fenric', 'Ghostlight' and 'Survival' were a good deal better than anything you'd have watched in the preceding 5 seasons. But at least you are now afforded the benefits of DVDs and digital streaming to undo any rash decisions of youth.

      BabelColour Thank you for replying. Back to my original point which I admit I did avoid after a very short time I thank you for making this video and I must say it's a shame a fan such as yourself didn't get to see many Troughton stories in their entirety. You would've loved them. Thank you BabelColour for making this thank you.

    Patrick Troughton took this role and ran with it, literally! :)
    A great doctor who really established the pattern for the rest, apparently he's Matt Smiths favorite, after he caught up on the history of the show after getting the role.

    A wonderful tribute to the man who kept Doctor Who alive, he had the whole weight of the show on his shoulders when he took over from Hartnell, if the viewers didn't accept him as the new Doctor, no Doctor Who, but they did, and we thank him for it. Patrick Troughton the man who kept the show alive! :D

    Matt Smith and the 11th were my introduction to Doctor Who, watching this, I can really see where he got his cues. Troughton's 2nd and Hartnell's 1st are fast becoming two of my other favorite Doctors (you can't forger your first so Matt gets an honorary spot there XD). And hey, who can't love a guy who can wear the hell out of a bow tie?
    Cheers to the man whose Doctor became the base template for so many to come, almost even moreso than the one who preceded him.

    Patrick Troughton was brilliant. 1) His iconic companions were Jamie Mc Crimmon, Sergeant Benton and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart 2) His monsters as well as the Daleks and the Cybermen included the Great Intelligence, the Robot Yeti and the Ice Warriors and they made Doctor Who history 3)The sonic screwdriver and the Time Lords were introduced 4)His speech with Victoria in The Tomb of the Cybermen was beautiful and wonderful 5)He brought on the humour and bumbling of the Doctor and 6) Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester Mc Coy were inspired by him which brought us their Doctors.

    • @doctorwhofanaudioplays8310
      @doctorwhofanaudioplays8310 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't want to sound disagreeable, but I can always see Hartnell in Baker, Colin and Sylvester. In fact I think that Hartnell and Troughton were complementary personalities. One was a explorer, a real scientist, a man of the brain, a mysterious man; the other was a adventurer, more colourful, never dark and in fact more human. All of those qualities are complementary and they together create the image of the doctor.

    One of my favorite doctors and what a fitting song for him, so cheerful! I just love Patrick Troughton! He showed what a regeneration can really do to this show and his humour is just verbally and physically great and I hope they release more of his missing stories because of a great Doctor he was!

    • @seanpolite1706
      @seanpolite1706 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Robert Green It really is a fitting song. One of my favorite parts is when the photographer is taking pics of him in the midst of the people running in panic, and he poses for her. I've only seen 4 of Troughton's stories (not counting "The Three Doctors"), and have loved each of them (adding a few to my personal collection). I discussed what I liked most about him with a Whovian co-worker. He had an absolutely infectious charm that radiated throughout his performances, which we agreed on. Yet as an actor, he had the range to apply pathos, seriousness, and even sinister nature ("The Enemy of the World") when he needed to. Jamie, Zoe, and Victoria were a perfect tandem for him as well, companion-wise.

    • @ReversedPolarity
      @ReversedPolarity 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sean Polite It's really great to find another whovian to talk to! I would like to have a Whovian co-worker as well. You're a lucky fellow! And that scene with the photograph is one of my favorites too!
      Your comment brought other great points of view on Troughton's performance and I agree with all of them. After seeing Hartnell's brilliant era end (although sad, because of his condition), it was refreshing seeing this "Cosmic Hobo" who made the regeneration formula work (for 50+ years!).
      I enjoyed most of his stories, whether it is the "Tomb of the Cybermen" (where he outsmarts the mastermind and the Cybermen puzzles at the same time) or the "Enemy of the World" (where he plays as two people in the same episode, not the mention that the story itself is material really worth watching because of the twists and the simplicity in everything) or the "Web of Fear" (where the Doctor can still steal the scenes, especially the final ones, even with the presence of the Great Intelligence, the frightning Yetis, Victoria's legs and the big guest cast!) or the "Mind Robber" (where he faces the powers of writing!) or "The War Games" (where he shows he cares about his companions and has to face judgement day while keeping a mix of comedy and drama at the same time) or any other episode.
      His way of portraying the Doctor was unique, even if he served as an example to other unique Doctors like David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi as well.
      His Doctor was trying to cope with regeneration while at the same time learning how to manage the TARDIS and facing new and old dangers in new ways. Even though Hartnell started the fool act since the very beginning, it's an atribute mostly given credit to Troughton because he was over the top brilliant at it and it's a big part of his era, not to mention he was as iconic as the other Doctors.
      I feel I could rewatch and rewatch Troughton's run because of the black-and-white magic he brought to the show and I'm glad he did.
      By the way, I loved "The Three Doctors" and I think you will love it as well. I really recommend it. It's a must watch classic filled with Omega (who I want to see reappear again in New Who), a big fan service with three Doctors that were absolutely fantastic at their roles, especially when they are together and talking to each other or to the guest cast, and an intriguing story that leaves an almost impossible cliffhanger hanging for many years.

    • @tarantulasrus7388
      @tarantulasrus7388 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Robert Green The Three Doctors has me constantly giggling from beginning to end. It's just a beautiful, hilarious, Whovian romp :D

    • @seanpolite1706
      @seanpolite1706 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Green Thanks so much for the kind words and your great insight! I have finally viewed "The Three Doctors", and it was an absolute stitch. Pertwee was another favorite of mine, and their interaction was a gem, including how Jo and the Brigadier were caught in their exchanges. William Hartnell for his ailing health played perfectly as a mediator for their antics, and kept the ancestral spirit of Classic Who in his moments. Omega was an amazing presence, and I would like to see him return. "The War Games" was a bonifade classic, and well worth the price I invested in my all-region DVD player.
      I really hope that one day "The Highlanders" even by way of animation replacements for the lost episodes makes its way to DVD (outside of the portion in the "Lost In Time" boxset). Frazier Hines from the instant I saw him became one of my all-time favorite companions in the irreplacable Jamie McCrimmon. Funny story --- I met up with a friend of mine at a local comic shop, and reserved the last copy of a book for him. As a show of thanks, he gave me carte blanche on any I wanted. I picked up the 1986 DOctor Who Magazine Summer Special with the catchy tagline of "The Historical Stories Reviewed." When I got home, I was delight to see at the bottom "EXCLUSIVE! Photos from the missing HIGHLANDERS". So thanks to the late Hugh David's photos and recollection, I have an idea of what a great story it was.
      Also, if you could recommend any more Troughton stories or Classic Who stories, I would greatly welcome it :) I have "The Web of Fear" as well, and it's amazing how Troughton's performance has been echoed so much in the nuances of later actors (and even his 3-year/short term rule with Peter Davison and some of the other actors later on). Thanks again!

    When I was a child we lived in the village of Lacock in Wiltshire. One day my dad was driving home and was confronted by a roundhead soldier on a horse. It was Patrick Troughton and he was filming in Moonraker (not the Bond movie) alongside George Baker and they used the village and Lacock Abbey as the sets. My earliest memories of him on TV was of him playing Gideon in Precious Bane.

    The fourth will always be 'my Doctor' and I love all the modern era Doctors. But over the years #2 has slowly become my favorite Doctor. He's not just a clown or a hobo; go back and take a close look at his performances, esp. in 'Enemy of the World.' His acting is just profound.

    • @frankcabanski9409
      @frankcabanski9409 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The acting in the original series was all around better than the acting in New Who. The 2005 version relies on special effects and a lot of frantic shouting. Capaldi is a breath of fresh air compared to Smith.

    It's a shame that so little still exists. If there was any era I wish were complete, it'd be his. I immediately took to him (and lovely Jamie!). You can't help but smile at his comedic physicality and warmth. And you could tell that the camaraderie was there in real-life. I never get tired of that epic side-to-side jumping run. The War Games, my favorite classic story, is one of the show's most emotional dramatic pieces, even by today's standards (I love 10 and 11 for the same reason).

    This is just about the best song for him. Also, I found it hilarious that when the lyrics say "Every step I take, I make a new friend," and the clip was from the mind Robber where the creepy kid holds the sword to his throat. 😂

    Happy 101th anniversary sir. William Hartnell may played the Doctor first, but it wasn't until your incarnation that the Doctor was THE Doctor as we know and love him today.

    He's still the greatest - he got it perfectly right and innovated the eccentricity
    Troughton first, Tom Baker 2nd, Tennant third in my eyes.

    Would just like to say Thank you @babelcolour for making this.
    Doctor Who itself got me through a difficult point in my life, and then I began to find tributes and I recently found this fantastic one and just the song alone really speaks so many volumes to me.
    From the bottom of my heart I say Thank you

    I am sad that so many of the second doctor's stories were lost. I'm 28 and came into Doctor Who via the NuWho, and when I saw ‘Tomb of the Cybermen’ on NetFlix Troughton instantly became by favorite doctor. I try to see what I can of him and cherish every one of them.

    A great tribute. Regretfully, I was very young when he took over the role. I had watched "W.H." from the 1st episode. I had no idea at the time, that he was suffering from ill-health. Nobody, outside of the "B.B.C.", knew anything about re-generation.
    So, I`m afraid, I was not very receptive for several stories, though, I still never missed an episode. Then, I came to enjoy his portrayal & as we all know, it happened again. I was much better, with re-generation from then on. I`m sure, he would be very proud. He & Jon Pertwee, did a great job promoting the programme, even after they left the role.

      Filby My only favourite is "W.H." because he was my first "Dr.". I have enjoyed the portrayals, of all the other actors, some to a greater degree than other`s. But, I always try to find something I like, about any new "Dr." or "Companion", then build from there hopefully. Forward with the "12th" !! :)
