Another trick I recommend is to use a color strip with different blend options and scale the color to fit over what specifically you want to highlight. There's no outline issue or need to duplicate and crop text with this method. You can also animate the color directly on the strip for strobing.
Ex. if you're coloring white text, you can choose your color then use the color or hue blending options, but if you're highlighting black text you can use add or something.

Yes, that is actually another great idea! That would definitely work in a lot of situations. Although, it might be more difficult if you are using non-white/black text. You can also use another strip as a mask. Maybe I'll make another video on that soon. The mask method might be a bit tedious, but all these methods are fairly tedious anyway. Yours seems to be the least tedious and could be used in most situations. Thanks for the suggestion!

Interesting.... I wonder if I (or anyone) could make a script tool for this using Blender Python scripting.
Using the crop tool method may need some math of sorts to figure out the location of the word using it's coordinates and font size in pixels.
Possibly using the white text as a mask for the colors could work too, but I wonder how it would work with fonts with gradients and such.
I think it should be possible though.

You're right it might very well be possible ... for someone else who isn't me to do, haha. Coding and scripting are completely out of my territory. But hey, if any devs want to work on that, I wouldn't be opposed. The VSE text could definitely use more work in many areas!

itd be nice if there were some sort of link to text so you don't have to repeat typing the same thing for each textbox

Actually, there is (kind of). In this video, I show how to copy a color to multiple strips by right clicking and selecting "Copy to Selected." ( 05:20 ) I think you can right click and copy the text you typed for one of the strips the same way. You just need to select all the text strips you want beforehand.
