    Sidewalk chalk, powdered tea, coffee grounds, pen ink, crayons/candle wax, matcha powder...
    I also know back in the "olden days" people dyed fabrics with dye made from fruits/veggies...maybe you could make your own dye that way...it would probably end up working like the food coloring.
    Another thing is health food powders...like turmeric, spirulina, beet...I see them all the time being sold in large bags.

      Yes, superfood powders should work well. There are a rainbow of colors of them.
      Colorful powders can be made by drying peels, like lemon or orange, or herbs or vegetables like parsley or grated beet root and then powdering them in a coffee grinder.
      Spices would be great too, like cinnamon, cayenne, saffron......
      Any nutritional supplements in the cupboard might be in capsule form, some are colorful, like powdered elderberry, olive leaf, activated charcoal, etc. Some vitamins like a B complex can be bright yellow. They are easily dumped out of the capsule.
      There's Rit powdered fabric dyes, about $3.

    Anyone trying the makeup: Walmart around holiday time has like no brand cheap makeup, many company’s sell loose pigment eyeshadow, dollar store has cheap eyeshadow.
    For a project you’ll want cheap stuff but swipe the tops to check for spray over cause cheap stuff will spray glitter over a matte shadow just to get you to think it’s nicer than it is.

    Here's my suggestions to try:
    (PS, I have not tested any of these myself)
    Foods:
    . Paprika
    . Food dye/pigment powders
    . Powdered ginger
    . Dried mustard powder
    . Powdered spices
    . Ground coffee, instant coffee
    . Cinnamon
    . Corn meal
    . Ground up cereals like fruit loops
    . Table salt (texture)
    . Himalayan pink salt ground
    . Coloured sprinkles (and coloured sugar) ground or not
    . Ground up hard candy
    . Ground up chalky candy
    . Pixy sticks
    . Ground up Advil
    . Ground kid vitamins
    . Pepto pills ground
    . Dried and ground up berries (maybe collect from cereals that have berries in them?)
    Natural pigments:
    . Ochre
    . Natural powdered paint pigments
    . Red clay ground up
    . Ground up dried clay
    . Charcoal
    . Coloured sand
    . Different colours of dirt
    . Crushed shells (must wear a mask it's really bad to inhale)
    . Makeup pigments (some are organic)
    . Powdered henna hair dye
    . Natural powdered fabric dyes like indigo
    . Fine sawdust (try different types of coloured wood)
    . Copper and brass dust
    . Aluminum dust
    . Iron dust (get a strong magnet and a bag, drag the magnet through sand)
    . Rust dust
    . Dried ground up dandelions
    . Dried ground up evergreens
    . Dried ground up grass
    . Dried, dead evergreen needles ground
    . Pollen
    . Ground up dried flowers
    . Ground up lavender
    . Ground up dried autumn leaves
    . Ground up seeds
    . Chalky rock dust
    . Graphite dust
    Other:
    . Nail powders
    . Powdered fabric dyes
    . Paint flakes crushed
    . Drywall mud dust
    . Dried nail polish flakes crushed
    . Ripped up coloured tissue paper
    . Ripped up thin coloured napkins
    . Nail glitter
    . Dried detergent powder
    . baby powder
    . Body glitter
    . Ground up florist foam
    . Ripped pieces of coloured sponges
    . Dryer lint? Sometimes I'll wash coloured clothing and when I empty the lint tray it's full of coloured lint
    . Pencil shavings from coloured pencils

      I've tested the coffee powder in my latest wood-filling test, but I use beans that i mix up,
      and never "ready-to-use" regular coffee, so there were a very little bit of white spots in it.
      I'm gonna now try cocoa powder to fill wood cracks, it seems ok !

    • @ChittenInc

      Kain Yusanagi dry mustard is just a pale color. The only reason yellow mustard is that bright yellow is because of turmeric.

    • @KainYusanagi
      @KainYusanagi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      www.thespruceeats.com/substitute-dry-mustard-for-prepared-mustard-995466 That's a pretty deep yellow colour. Not very 'pale' at all. Wiki concurs, showing upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/76/Senf-Variationen_edit2.jpg from top to bottom, left to right, mustard seeds, dry mustard powder, mustard with turmeric, a Bavarian sweet brown mustard, dijon mustard *which is turmeric-free*, and a coarse French brown mustard.
      No, the depth of the yellow of mustard doesn't come from turmeric. Once again, Turmeric is a bright *orange* www.indiamart.com/proddetail/pure-turmeric-powder-16143372297.html looking more like Kraft Dinner's nearly-fluorescent "cheddar cheese" powder. Mixing small amounts of orange with yellow produces a warm, lightly orange-tinted yellow, that's all.

      Or just mustard powder. I wonder which is more potent in color, also, which will change less in color. The mustard seemed to darken.

    • @farialmab4723
      @farialmab4723 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Turmeric is more potent,will change to reddish though. The regular mustard would have worked, but he added an ABSURD Amount, wet/water-based pigment vs. amount of resin. ANY wet pigment would give problems when it’s like 20% of the resin amount! 🤨🤔

    Well, of course we want to see more experiments with alternatives to commercial pigments! As for the mustard and hot sauce, they both also have quite a bit of vinegar in them - not just water. With vinegar being anywhere from 3 - 9% acetic acid, do you think it's possible that acid could be another reason for the softer cure on those two?
    Either way, I really enjoyed this video. Keep 'em coming!

Consider trying RIT fabric dye; gel food colouring (highly concentrated, used for cakes, comes in many colours; found in craft stores/Wal*Mart); beet juice (may not work, as beet is a "fugitive" dye), Easter egg dye tablets (I use them on wool); grape juice; liquid inks; acrylic paints; powdered dried flowers; and/or colored craft sand.

      It works, but it's kind of a mess. Regarding working around the natural color, I've found that it's basically the same story with any bright dye. I always stuck with reds or oranges. Trying to do anything blue just ended up being really weak or greenish.

    Speaking of mixing in household substances with resin...
    What happens if you mix vinegar with the resin and baking soda with the hardener?
    Could potentially be pretty weird if they are immiscible with the resin and hardener - little droplets of vinegar randomly coming into contact with bits of baking soda as you mix...

  • @ClaudiaSketches
    @ClaudiaSketches 6 ปีที่แล้ว +68

    Is Lightfastness an issue here though?
    The alternative colourants aren't designed to resist fading/colour change over time. It's possible that commercial pigments have been selected to be more lightfast- and maybe that's one of the reasons why they're more expensive.

    • @theoldcronestwistedorphana4092
      @theoldcronestwistedorphana4092 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Especially the food color will fade very quickly. Plus the mustard and hot sauce are vinegar based, which will cause issues with the resin. You can clean wet resin with white vinegar.

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not sure to be honest- on one hand they're likely pigment based, but not all pigments are guaranteed to be lightfast (but tend to be more lightfast than dyes). Make-up certainly doesn't need to be lightfast as it's only worn/exposed to light usually for only few hours.

    • @autochton
      @autochton 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think this calls for experimentation. How lightfast are commercial pigments, vs. improvised ones? A few samples of a few comparable colors, in various light levels (with controls kept in the dark, of course), and we should be able to form a judgement.

    Food coloring or dyes are also available in powdered form. Mostly used in baking, like when coloring fondant. As for the pearlescent effect, there is a food additive called pearlescence which is used to give food that shimmer effect. A couple/few years ago it was added to a high end vodka and sold as Viniq. It comes in a few different colors with matching flavors.

They get such a mirror finish by being buffed on the nail so all the particles are aligned, instead of suspended in a matrix. Hooooowever, if a piece was either coated in a thin layer of something adhesive or buffed with the powders while still tacky, that could give a chrome effect I think!

      This is what I was wondering too - can you smell the kool aid and other food products after it cures?

    • @Vaustick
      @Vaustick 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I asked the same question. he answered me and said "No. The resin took over once it cured."
      kinda sad. i was hoping it would smell :P

    i make pendants often, and used a lot of my old eyeshadow for dye instead of real resin dye. they've all turned out super well so far, and like you said, the color is often really pigmented and nice! if you leave some bigger chunks of powder or mix some colors together, the effect is often very interesting as well.

    Can you try this again with fashion hairdye? There are a few companies that don't use peroxides and stuff, so it may not react? Or it could react and do something crazy lol

    Great experiment Peter. I have found the same, epoxy seems to work well with any dry powders and can tolerate small amounts of moisture, but polyurethane resins hate moisture. Cheers, Jim

      You can tell when they just send emails in bulk. So I sometimes get emails from companies "we would love you to review our new mascara on your channel." "We think you'd look hot in our new pumps"

      After they're well and truly cured, they wouldn't, there's no way for the aromas to escape the resin matrix. And before they're cured, they smell like the resin hardener.

    Interesting. I've got a wood working project with cracks that I wanted to stabilize with some red resin. Its probably something I won't repeat - so the food coloring sounds like a great option.

    This was a good test. and i agree the Quantity of Contents from Food die to other water bass pigment choices are the cause of the level of cure. i am Curious to the level of pigments that you can get from other powdered spices. i think you should get a mortar and Pastel. and Do a "nature pigment" gathering Video. go out and grab things that are local to your area and grind them up for pigments. This is the process that was used to make paints and diys in the past. i think this and the video i suggested would be a great idea. i may do it as well even if you do. to see what i can get out of my surroundings.

    Great Video! If you do another round of testing you should try: coffee, sidewalk chalk, cinnamon, art sand, art glitter, and sugar with food coloring (to see if you get a sparkly pattern.) One other thing you might want mention is if any these things you use retain their smell after a time; items that smell like coffee, chocolate or etc. would be cool.

    I'd be interested to see how the food-based ones hold up in six months or so. I imagine the resin would help stabilise it, but it'd be interesting to see if they discolour or go off. Coffee grounds? - I'm a barista, so I've got a ton of those to experiment with when I can get a workshop going.
    And are you going to Makers Central 2019?

    • @jamescameron-clarke2560

      @karlibell22 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was also thinking about how they'd hold up over time, so I'd love to see a video in like half a year from now to see what happens. I think coffee grounds would look cool but not necessarily color the resin so much as get suspended within it
