I met Garbage at a Tower Records signing in Atlanta back in 1999. Being born in Wi. I brought a Wisconsin Badgers jersey to be signed by them, which brought about a great conversation with the entire group about the old days Wisconsin. Such a great group of people!

Dave Grohl didn't actually buy the entire Sound City, but he bought the NEVE console that was used at Sound City for sooooo many historic recordings. There is a documentary called SOUND CITY that details that process. :) Great Video!

Thanks for this video Jordan. There needs to be some kind of historical plaque somewhere on the outside brick wall to indicate its significance as the place where an entire generation of classic rock music was created. On a similar note, I am curious if you will do a Smashing Pumpkins-related video sometime in the future?

I love this vlog, Nirvana Nevermind is the soundtrack of my teens along with the Smashing Pumpkins, along with Garbage, and Pearl Jam. But Nevermind, was played in my stereo and my cd player in my parent's van while I was driving to school. Plus the album influenced me to pick up the guitar. I learned most of the songs from that album. Thanks for sharing former Smart studios the house of Grunge!

What a great presentation! Thanks for putting this out.
Just a small correction - Dave Grohl didn't buy Sound City, he bought the Neve recording console that lived there since the early 70s and was responsible for many legendary albums, including Nevermind. That console is the centerpiece for his studio 606, which is the Foo Fighters home base.
Sound City closed in 2012 but was re-opened a few years ago under new owners. Cheers!

$500 for a 12 hour day in 1989 is still a great price to record at that quality. Back in the 70's the Swampers at Muscle Shoals were charging Bob Seger $1,500 a song! But the Swampers were playing all the instruments on the session too, so that price included each musicians pay for each song. The end product I think was worth it. The production quality on Bob's songs like Mainstreet is as good as it gets.

I’ve driven by this building thousands of times. I didn’t realize that was where Smart Studios was until this video. Madison has such random connections to music, from tragic, Otis Redding’s plane crash, to Elvis jumping out of his limo to save a guy from getting beat up, to Van Halen trashing a hotel room.

@@DazewithJordantheLion I am always surprised there isn’t more of a deal made about Otis Redding? I realize it was tragic, but it is a part of the history of music and Madison. Madison was also where Clyde Stubblefield spent his last years. He would play quite regularly in town.

actually, NIRVANA was still with Sub Pop at the time. Bruce and Jonathan thought they were recording for the Next album to be released on Sub Pop. instead, NIRVANA took the Smart tapes and shopped them around the big record labels. when Geffen picked them up, they still owed that album to Sub Pop. because Krist had insisted they have contracts, Sub Pop got royalties from Nevermind, and their name along side of Geffen. saved the company, which is still in business. very interesting to actually see Smart studios.
