Wow 8k! The problem is only a handful of people have an 8k monitor.
But let's put this aside for a moment. And let's give the middle finger to those who say, "8k is beyond the range of Human sight.." As if sight is measured in lines of resoultion. Dopes! They said that crap with 4k. And even my Mother can tell on a 47 inch monitor 10 feet away that 4k looks better than 1080p. Some are still saying, "You need to be sitting within 5 feet in front of 65 inch 4k monitor to see an improvement over 1080p..." Those morons are still around!
However 8k will never catch on with consumers. Well, not in my lifetime. Professionals yes. I believe that in 10 years all movie houses will use 8k digital projectors. And a few obsessed videophiles and of course editing houses, etc. But it will never catch on. Any more than those silly 21:9 (2.3:1) monitors will either.
The Academy choose the 1.78:1 ratio for a damn good reason. If you don't like the cropping of old Academy Standard ratio (1.33:1) movies and television shows on your 1.78:1 monitors now....On a 21:9 televison any 1.33:1 ratio material will shrink your television in half if not more. Do the math!
For example: On a 66 inch 21:9 (2.3:1) monitor a 1.33:1 movie like "Gone With The Wind" would shrink to a viewing area of 33 inches if not less. Although common, most of us do not own 65 inch sets. And even then all old Academy movies/shows would just end up as 32.5 inches on your big 65 inch screen. Where as on a normal 47 inch monitor you would get a bigger viewing area for a 1.33:1 ratio show/movies than you would on a 65 inch 21:9 television set. Do the math?! And cropping for the North American Standard of 1.85.1 ratio on a 21:9 television would be as much as it is for the 2.39:1 movies on 1.78:1 televisons now. Only the cropping would be at the sides and not the top and bottom as it is now. And almost 20 years of 1.78:1 HD shows would be cropped even more. And the 1.66:1 ratio of European movies cropped EVEN MORE STILL.
    However,
If all you are going to be watching is new video games and superwide: 2.35:1, 2:39:1, 2.5:1 (The Robe) and 2.79:1 (Ultra Panavision 70mm. Only 100 movies shot in this ratio. 1956 - 1973) then 21:9 monitors are for you. But otherwise....Bad idea. Bad to only have that ratio in the house.
Listen up childern I work in video/film audio Post production. The resoultion of a 35mm camera negative can be anywhere between 3.2 and 3.6k. That's why we scan it in at 4k and not higher. The higher you go the film to video transfer degrades. That's how we know. You scan just a little bit over the source resoultion not at it.
This is it! 4k is the brass ring. 35mm film will not get any better than this. What people don't realize was that movie house 35mm prints were 700 - 800 lines of resolution. And that's been proven. If was being projected so it looks good. The Blu-Rays (1080p) you have (assuming they were scanned at 2k) are way better than the old movies we use to see. Before digital projectors with digital 2k/1080p files replaced them.
But there is no where to go from 4k. Think about it. Little House In The Prairie was shot on 35mm film. 4 years ago they went back to the 35mm negatives and scanned them at 4k. In 2015 the show was re-released on DVD and high definition Blu-Ray. When 4k is firmly settled in (like 1080p is now) we will have a 4k release of Little House On The Prairie. Not to mention other shows like: The Twilight Zone (except Season 5 shot on video), Bat Man, Space 1999, I Love Lucy, North And South 1, 2 and 3; Roots (Both the original and the Next Generation), Masada, Shogun, Anne Of Green Gables, Battlestar Galactica (1978), Tenko (Was it shot on film? Anyone know) all could be released at 4k one day. Not to mention every 35mm movie ever shot. But the buck stops here guys. An 8k format won't pump out anymore resolution out of those 35mm negatives. 8k will give you the full resolution of 70mm films. Less than 200 Hollywood films shot in 70mm. So 8k will have some mileage but not much.
This is where the money is guys! Re-releasing movies and television shows on DVD, then high definition 1080p Blu-Rays and now finally 4k. Wow!! But with only a handful of 70mm movies to put out in 8k....mmm...I don't see the industry jumping at 8k.
New Television shows of course in 8k. But remember the difference from 250 lines to 720/1080 was big. How could you not notice it? And although the difference between 1080p and 4k is small it is nevertheless an improvement. Especially with the 4k movies on disk shown on a nice big monitor. But the improvement from 4k to 8k will hard to notice even on a 65 inch set. And most, as I have said before, don't have them. 4 times better than 8k right? So it should look better. Let's hope so.
Remember all the 8k demos are designed to look good. They are made to exploit your monitors. All the excessive deep colour I see in demos just don't exist in most movies and television shows.
    Just my nickel....
