I drove down I-35 minutes after this tornado crossed the interstate & I can attest that they are lucky to be alive. That was the greatest amount of destruction I have ever seen in my life & I’ve lived in tornado alley most of my life. I’ve also been in a war & nothing compared to this storm
Yes indeed. I toured the damage path from this tornado a week afterwards, and - despite having seen countless photos & videos from monster tornadoes over the decades- seeing the destruction in Moore was an overwhelming experience for me!
Was 15 and visiting my aunt that day…wrong place at the wrong time on my way thru to see my sister in California with my mom and step dad and my mom and stepdad went to a store in the county next to this one? And I could hear the fear in my moms voice on the phone when she called to warn me about the incoming Tornado (she’s from Scotland came here in the 70’s to the state of South Carolina where she was a police woman) anyways I never got a hug from her so tight when she seen me again about 6-8 hours later. Asked my aunt since we were driving in an rv if I could sit at her house and watch tv that day and she said sure if it’s okay with you’re mom you can. I asked my mom and she asked my aunt? They both said yes just keep my phone handy so I did I forgot my charger in the rv and ironically they had to drive it to the other county to the store for the bbq we had planned originally ? Anyways she had called me and told me to grab her cat and the keys to her cellar and get in cover we had no time and I didn’t know she was right until 2 mins after I got in the cellar it had flattened her house I just had time to slip my shoes on and grab my purse her cat and my jacket and run like heck to the cellar. If I had the footage I’d post it to show you I’m not lying. But that was 3-5 phones ago so I lost it unfortunately. I was 15 years old at that point. I’m in my 20’s now.
Terrifying I totally agree, wondering if it's heading directly at you. Plus seeing how extremely massive it was just unbelievable almost. When storms ramp up they seem to sure gain amazing strength especially around OKC area. I know I'd want a big time shelter.
Thank you so much for this. Hope you are more or less ok. This is a terrifying video not so much because of what is visible and directly happening, but because of what we KNOW is happening nearby. Although no one is racing around in a car screaming, and the roar is not yet audible, the twister is coming slowly and steadily, it's relentless, and we know how powerful and destructive this storm was. And the neighbors are casually walking around, not aware of how urgent things are. Assuming life is back together after 4 years, any plan for better shelter or access to shelter? I wonder... and what became of those casually moving neighbors?
Before the siren, listening to that thing roar was eerie! That person in the red top doesn’t seem the least bit worried. Just casually walks to the building as if normal. Either balls or stupidity! Perhaps some of both. Speaking of sirens, why in God’s name do they wait until a monster like that is on the ground?!?!! My community in northern Illinois hits the sirens the moment rotation is spotted on radar and identified by the National Weather Service.🤔
My sister and my brother now lived there they said the tornado almost hit the house they were living in at the time it went easy so they were really lucky to have a neighbor with an underground shelter

have you bothered to look at the area on google maps? you wouldn't be barrelling much of anywhere. you could go south on santa fe - but this was taken south of 19th street to begin with, and radio/tv had been advising people to "get underground or get away" for at least 20 minutes and there are quite a few vids in which you can see santa fe became jammed with traffic. a look at the area and you can glean how santa fe was basically the ingress and egress for all of the homes between orr family farm and plaza towers and over to telephone rd. you don't have a plan, you have a wishful fantasy...
Pretty sure this is The Greens Apartment complex at the southeast corner of SW19th and Santa Fe Ave. The southern edge of the tornado's path is just at or slightly north of 19th St at that point. Her building appears to be in the center of the complex and probably fared better than the northern most buildings in the complex which are on 19th St. So she was probably 300 or 400 yards away from some pretty significant damage and within a half mile of Briarwood Elementary school which was completely destroyed. Not a direct hit but close enough that it would have scared the bejesus out of me.
Such a calming effect of that tornado. Tornado, birds chirping, sunny 1/2 dark on the other. It is easy be caught up in beauty. People should taking cover. However I would be doing the same thing.
You apparently made the best decision but if I have no below ground shelter I'm hauling my tail in the truck if visibility will permit. I know meteorologist say not to try to out run it but I have seen many storm chasers do just that. Glad you survived.

kjvwolfslayer you dont know. you could get caught in a traffic jam, power lines down, a lot of bad variables could happen or the twister could change direction.
Getting in a car to escape it with it being that close is not smart. That tornado was a mile wide, a car cant out run it. Its much safer to get shelter.
I be damn if I would be sitting there waiting for death to come. NOPE...I'll take my chances in my car going in the opposite direction. Good luck!!! And that fool standing around looking all soon. I can't. smdh
You should NEVER get in your car and try to outrun a tornado. Every meteorologist in the world will tell you that. If you're already inside, seek shelter in an interior room or closet, put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. If you have a basement, go there and get under a heavy piece of furniture, and put on a bike helmet to protect your head. If you don't have a bike helmet, invest in one.
@@BigMoneysLife Well, if you actually knew anything about this tornado, you would know that from the time it crossed Canadian River until it got to Moore, meteorologists were ALL saying "if you can;t get underground, then get out of its way". As a result virtually every road was jammed with cars of people taking their advice.
Scary is standing on the second floor of a apartment building not knowing if it's going to come and hit the apartments. You should not stay on the second floor that's crazy
This was not the first time the sirens went off for this tornado; the sirens are programmed to sound for several minutes, cycle down, then sound again as needed.
If this happened to me, I'd be scared, too! Too bad there aren't basements in Oklahoma or Texas. We have basements in Kansas & North from there which are safe places for tornadoes. Living in Oklahoma & Texas makes you a sitting duck for tornadoes!
True, but the good news is that there are now a number of companies that manufacture & install above-ground storm shelters that provide excellent protection, even from tornadoes capable of doing EF-5 level damage. Folks usually get them installed in the back corner of their garage, or perhaps where there is a closet in the middle of the house. Also, some newer homes in OK have a small underground shelter built underneath the garage...in fact, some of those small underground shelters saved lives when this Moore Monster hit.
About 30 secs into this video, i would of already been banging on doors omw to my car with my family to bounce the eff out of there. Your chance of surviving an f5 above ground is nil.
To everyone that says she could get in a car and drive away. The video is 2:37 long. About enough time to find your keys, run downstairs, then hop in your car and have the tornado pick it up and carry it away.
LOL for you maybe. I'd already have my purse, laptop and animals in the car by the time this video started--out of sheer paranoia. Then literally ten-twenty seconds to race back downstairs, fire it up and peel out at top speed. Thing is, it's a question of weighing the odds. You can't tell just by looking if a tornado is an EF5, but you can certainly tell if it's strong and big enough to be dangerous--a debris cloud alone tells you a lot. For a tornado like that, you need a safe room or an underground shelter to be sure of making it through. If you don't have those things, and especially if you can't even access a basement or a ground floor bathroom, then you might as well run, because you'll probably be dead anyways if you don't.
@@brideofsnape2046 Believe it or not, the typical fatality rate in a violent tornado capable of doing EF-5 damage is below 10%. The overwhelming majority of people in the path of the May 20, 2013 'Moore Monster' survived. The main reason for this is because even the most violent tornadoes do not cause EF-5 level damage all the way along their track, and any EF-5 level damage that does occur will be restricted to a very narrow area in the centre of the damage path. That was the case with this tornado. In fact, with this tornado, the majority of homes received EF-3 level or lower damage. So, if your home is properly constructed (building codes were followed, etc.), and you're able to take shelter in a basement, the odds of you surviving are quite good. That applies, even with a violent tornado like this one, or the tornado that hit Tuscaloosa on April 27, 2011.
@@BroadwayLTDProductions True. Having said that, any tornado can be a killer if people in the path are not aware & prepared, and/or they are in a vehicle, and/or they take shelter in a structure that is not very strong (e.g. people in mobile homes/trailers/manufactured homes have been killed by EF-1 tornadoes & even killed by destructive winds from severe thunderstorms, derechos, etc.)
A look at google maps would reveal that no matter what it looks like in this video, she WAS NOT in the direct path of the tornado, these apts were on the south side of 19th street. She could easily have escaped by going south on Santa Fe toward South Moore HS. Numerous chasers fled that way and there are a number of excellent videos taken from South Moore HS.

@Judy G. Most apartment buildings, mobile home parks, and stores in 'Tornado Alley' and 'Dixie Alley' do not have shelters. @@feliciamabrey4108 The funny squiggles are called text. Reading the text can reveal all sorts of information. You should try it sometime.
Wen I have full access to a PC & full power, I'll post a pic montage as well. A thanks for you patience & understanding.
I would have been shakin' like a dog shittin' razorblades if that thing was coming towards me
Wtf is wrong with you
"A dog shitting razorblades" is a saying I've never heard before. Thus Spoke Zarathustra....
From a storm chaser and weather nerd your video was very nicely done. Could have made a bunch of money if you had a weather video file broker. Thanks for sharing.
You're a storm chaser, and complimenting her on her video? Where is the part where you tell her she should have been seeking shelter?
@@BigMoneysLife 3 things remarkably pathetic by your reply:
(1) Why did you respond to a 5-year old comment?
(2) If her, or anyone needs to be told to seek shelter when they are staring directly at an approaching tornado...that's called Darwinism.
(3) How dare the storm chaser not scold her like a child, I know!
@@BigMoneysLife yes, and the storm chaser knows more than you. Please be quiet.
I don't care what everybody says. I'll be jumping in my pickup truck and getting the fuck out of Dodge!!!
I would certainly want to get out of its direct path if time allowed.
2nd story of that apartment would have not been a good idea in that tornado, much less any tornadoes!
No doubt about that.
Wow ya'lls sirens were activated way late, it should have gone off before that thing touched the ground... SMH
KickRocks131 it did
KickRocks131 the was most likely the 2nd or 3rd activation of the sirens do you really think it took them that long? Idiot
Caiden Wichert You just nonchalantly call people names just because someone says something that might not be fully informed? I bet you don’t do that to people’s faces.
I like the word nonchalantly
Sirens go off as soon as the warning is issued, and the sirens run for a few minutes then need to shut off to prevent overheating then will go off again
I feel so bad for you and I know that terrified sound in your voice because me and my husband lived in new orleans and that's tornado alley we got enough of the bad weather so we now live in new Mexico...💗😻
Thanks for sharing. Glad you are OK.
I grew up infatuated with tornadoes. That was in Ohio. I've recently moved to Okc. Now, every time the sky turns gray, I'm nervous. Tornadoes from a distance are fascinating. When they hit home, it's terrifying
0:28 just wondering why did the sirens go off early? Or did they already went off and then came on?
They had been cycling for 30 minutes or more, since the thing touched down SW of NewCastle.
Wow that is really loud! This is the loudest video I've ever heard of a tornado!
"It's almost here".
*Continues to admire the nado from the balcony*
This is like nightmare material...huge tornado roaring, siren blaring and its heading at you....but it was real for you. You handled the situation calmly.
Terrifying but great video of an historic twister. I can never see that tornado wthout instantly thinking of PlazaTowers Elementary.
That sound is terrifying. Glad you made it out safe. Unfortunately another of others didnt..
Living in an apt complex, especially on an upper level, with something like that coming towards me I believe I would hop in the car and barrel away from it.
have you bothered to look at the area on google maps? you wouldn't be barrelling much of anywhere. you could go south on santa fe - but this was taken south of 19th street to begin with, and radio/tv had been advising people to "get underground or get away" for at least 20 minutes and there are quite a few vids in which you can see santa fe became jammed with traffic. a look at the area and you can glean how santa fe was basically the ingress and egress for all of the homes between orr family farm and plaza towers and over to telephone rd. you don't have a plan, you have a wishful fantasy...
I lived in those apartment buildings after my house was destroyed by the same tornado
Bless you all! Sending Okie love from Oregon. Heal fast!
From California too, where everything is on fire! Well, fire season is over but ya know
Such a calming effect of that tornado. Tornado, birds chirping, sunny 1/2 dark on the other. It is easy be caught up in beauty. People should taking cover. However I would be doing the same thing.
Oh my gosh! I pray you all were safe!!!
Are you trying to retroactively make it so they were not hurt? lol just kidding I understand
I woulda been really panicked....
I just lost my house and a lot of my belongings ina flood
glad you are all alright
One thing i can say your siren worked and the people across the street just walking around like nothing happening
You apparently made the best decision but if I have no below ground shelter I'm hauling my tail in the truck if visibility will permit.
I know meteorologist say not to try to out run it but I have seen many storm chasers do just that.
Glad you survived.
I hate how creepy that siren is!
That tornado siren is eerie as hell.
I've never lived in tornado country but my father grew up around there and he was terrified of them.
This is most likely Unit 2204 of 'The Greens' Apartment complex at 2100 S Santa Fe Ave. If this holds true then at the time the video starts, we are viewing the tornado as it strikes Briarwood Elementary. So Sad.
BRO I SAW YOU ON THE CLOSE UP MOORE VIDEO HOW TO YOU FIND THIS STUFF OUT?
If I saw that beast heading my way, I would be headin for the car. I just can't understand why anyone would stay in the path like that.
not smart.. getting in your car is one of the worst things to do. FIND SHELTER
***** If it was within 2 minutes away, I'd be out of the area. Plus, I wouldn't want my car getting damaged.
kjvwolfslayer
you dont know. you could get caught in a traffic jam, power lines down, a lot of bad variables could happen or the twister could change direction.
***** I hear ya man. There really are no safe decisions in this situation. I'm just glad I don't live in an area that deals with this.
Holy crap they really do sound like trains coming after you. Scary stuff
If a tornado isn't moving right or left it's coming at you.
Scary is standing on the second floor of a apartment building not knowing if it's going to come and hit the apartments. You should not stay on the second floor that's crazy
She keeps saying look at the debris. You're about to be debris, get downstairs!
Moore's sirens went off somewhat late when this tornado happened
So what happened to the woman filming this, did it wreck everything?
They were ok. She actually made a second video showing the aftermath. The tornado missed the apartment complex.
About 30 secs into this video, i would of already been banging on doors omw to my car with my family to bounce the eff out of there. Your chance of surviving an f5 above ground is nil.
Exactly, if you don’t have a basement, you better just get the fuck in your car and go.
@@derekbaker3279 Exactly. And all all it takes is for one building to have EF-5 damage for a tornado to be rated as such.
Wow that was scary, hope you are OK today
Still one of the scariest tornado videos
1:57 what the hell is that guy carrying?! A freaking light saber?!? He's probably thinking, 'Don't worry guys, I got a light saber!!! I'll stop this tornader with the force!!!' He says while the light saber is having a fit all around him... People these days... This is a good example of how stupidity will end the world. No doubt. 😂
tornado0910 If it we’re possible, I rather be permanently transformed into a monstrous looking demon with supernatural powers, & my free will to be my good self. Better that, than to be mortal human being with either evil intentions or stupidity.
A glow stick dumbass. Very handy when power is lost.
Glow stick, dummy. Widely used to SEE when the power is out. DOY!
Thanks for the demo of how your stupidity will end the world. FYI, glow sticks are very valuable in the dark. They allow you to see when there is no electricity. DOY...
God bless you sweetie.. Awful feeling.. 🙏
I know it's exactly where these apartments are in Moore Oklahoma more Oklahoma. My coworker was affected by the tornado and she lived in those apartments.
I'm just glad I made it out alive, by God's grace.
GODs grace, amen!!! please post another vid. glad your ok!!!
Listen to that monster roar.
Wow this video is intense!!! Amazing!!! What a MONSTER of a tornado!
Monsoon winds can be very bad. But it's not the winds that kill here. It's the flash floods. One year we got a bad storm and it ripped trees out of the ground and damaged roofs. It was scary.
You are brave beyond belief
Jesus God. And when the sirens went off? Chilling.
I life in the Netherlands ! We have seldom Tornadoes ! I have seen 2 weak Landsprout Tornadoes F0 in the Netherlands !
My name is Antonio and im watching you guys TH-cam video of that EF5 tornado headed for y'all apartment complex did you guys make it through that powerful tornado 🌪🌪🌪🌪🌪🌪🌪i will be scared to see a EF5 tornado comes into my home town
What was the results after it passed
If I lived there I would dig an underground bunker first thing then build a house on top.
Your clay walled non-draining hole would fill with water. Oklahoma is mostly clay. That's why the soil is reddish. Doy.
Yeah im pretty sure if i watched that coming toward me i would load up and head out.
Great video. Thank you for sharing it. You are due lots of credit for being right in front of the tornado and filming it. What major streets or intersection in Moore is this located? If I go near that intersection when I visit the city of Moore, I will be thinking about you and this video you posted. Did your house get any damage? Glad you are alright.
Not my video but I’m 90% sure this is filmed in The Greens apartment complex on the southeast corner of 19th and Santa Fe. The tornado passed probably a couple hundred yards north of this building. They had some damages but are still standing today
Did it miss you or hit you? I wouldve been running to a storm shelter somewhere. No way would I risk riding out that tornado in an apt on the second floor! The first floor? Maybe. Hope you made it thru it!
Knowing where these apartments are it passed right across the street from them
The first siren that sounded was a 2T22
what drove me nuts is the fact the lady didn't yell at him loud enough, like she didn't even try to. wtf
If the sirens and roar of a tornado isnt enough warning, i hope he dieded.
Fear can take the air out of your lungs. Don't judge her so harshly.
The shriek of a woman always makes a situation worse in my opinion. It makes rational people have trouble thinking due to the annoyance of the sound.
I’m terrified that the siren didn’t go off until it finally did. Jesus Christ, talk about absolutely no lead time
There was over 20 minutes of lead time. Touchdown was miles and miles away across Canadian River, local news crews were all over this thing from touchdown onward. Not to mention it was clearly visible from 10 miles away. If you are waiting for a siren you'll likely die. Wake up!
I wonder if the apartment was damaged or was it not a direct hit? I’m glad the owners are ok. Looks a nice place to live apart from the risk of being hit by an EF5.
That is a big tornado! 😲
I would have been out of the path of the tornado before it even got close Instead of just sitting there waiting for it to show up. Great video of the tornado though.
This is how people die, you see it coming you are in an upstairs apartment and all you do is stand and record. You were less than a mile south from being killed, hope the video is worth that risk.
oklahomasoonerss what should she have done? serious question. I've always wondered what do you do in apartment or dorms? In college I was on the 4th floor. what should you do if see this from 4th floor. run? what?
They took cover at the last second at least, unlike a lot of people.
what if I'm D1 run to the ground floor and take cover inside the most inside room away from Windows and doors. Basement or underground is best hit to survive
Pearlsey She did lock the door too🤪
@Judy G. Most apartment buildings, mobile home parks, and stores in 'Tornado Alley' and 'Dixie Alley' do not have shelters. It wasn't until after this deadly tornado that a significant percentage of residents in Moore bothered to get a proper tornado shelter & only now are shelters being installed in Moore's schools.
So I take.it.it did impact your apt.. did you leave or hunker down? I filled and chased this storm, and the minute I came out and saw it not translating left or right, but only getting bigger, I'd have been gone! Hope you n yours were okay!
Peace, Nic and Stephi
I'm sorry, but when I see people do stupid things, like the guy standing outside looking for the tornado. It reminds me of watching a horror movie and the characters go into the scary house, even though they know the monster is inside waiting. At some point I start hoping the monster get them because of their stupidity.
I would have left. Plenty of time to jump in car. They know what direction its going
I can't say I blame you for been scared
I think something happened there towards the end with the camera. I know many may not of caught it. But it's the Angle effect. Right as the theater settles in with popcorn the film immediately cuts. Sorry folks.
Were did she shelter? looks like she's on a second story apartment
For something headed straight at your apartment it never seems to get there. Methinks it was just passing by
