  • Gordon was built in 1943 by North British for the War Department and used by the Royal Engineers' Longmoor Military Railway (LMR) to train locomotive crews prior to the invasion of France. It was painted in dark blue and red. I had understood that it was the inspiration for Gordon in the Thomas the Tank Engine books but I have been told that it was not named Gordon until 1952. We see it at work on the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) in June 1998 and take a ride on the footplate from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth.

    For the record, Gordon in the Thomas the Tank Engine books was named for a boy associated with the Reverend Wilbert Awdry's son Christopher Awdry during childhood. This Gordon was named for a well-reputed Army General who by coincidence had that name. Samuel F.

    As a kid, I went with a friend to LMR families day from Farnborough North via Guildford and Liss Forest Road. I rode around the big loop behind Gordon and Brussels. Years later took a ride behind Brussels on the KWVR. Haven't seen Gordon since though.

      fnaf fan games and trainz simulator fan actually Gordon is an A1 like Flying Scotsman was, or they would be only cousins but, if Gordon was rebuilt to an A3 like Scotsman then it’s still possible of them being brothers or Gordon was even rebuilt as an A1/1 since in the books it says Gordon was the first Pacific

    When I was a National Serviceman 1954, At Longmoor, one of our duties was to clean the engines at the end of the day. I think 'Gordon' at the time was named, ' General Sir Gordon 'something.' Its duties at the time was to meet the trains at Liss station and take servicemen back to Longmoor station. The LMR station was at the back of Liss station.

      The SVR has very extensive workshops and talented staff. However I did not see them being made. IIRC they were a thin metal sheet but I am sure someone at the SVR would know if you e-mailed them.

    Anna Jeannette Dixon, for one the engine don't have side windows, for the leaks the engine is near to the end of its 10 year ticket, and for the over firing not at all, engine ain't blowing off neither black smoke at one point light grey haze, fire is mostly dead tbh, if u think u can do any better, come down and have ago.

      @annajeannettedixon2453 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      well I think I did more than just loco spot and take numbers and the like, I worked on steam locos in the motive power depot and fire rased on sunday evenings and on saturday nights cleaning the smoke box out and droping fires moving them into the stalls for the night doing boiler washes cleaning all the parts on the loco , clean what we could of the loco its self, 90099 was my favoret loco so she got that extra rub these were the best days of my lifes at the end I saw men crying on there way home for the last time, I seen men crying in there locos giving them the last pat and saying farwell old girl rest in pace but they all ended up in peaces and melted down for what ever came next, very heart moving times I never forget them and this govrnment wast of pubic money its still not changed any now there still wasting pubic money and the pooress is having too pay of there miss use, of pubic cash it make me very up set, #

      I don't remember her being unduly hot though the fire door seemed to be open a lot of time. AFAIK there was no foot control for opening and closing the door while shoveling coal into the fire.

      Even tho that this engines is in blue the Fictional Gordon doesn’t. have. a. name. plate.

    well I never seen a locomotive in such a poor contiditio has this I seen BR W-Ds in a lot better condition before they went for Scrap. There is leaks al lover the siding widows are missing the fireman over firing this loco thses like a light fire not a heavy fire like he got , the fireman just wasting coal and not operating the fire in the right way, I have fired and driven these W-Ds back in the 1960S

    • @david-othen
      @david-othen  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      anna jeannette Dixon Over firing is certainly a problem. At that time they were having difficulties getting good steam coal.

    • @annajeannettedixon2453
      @annajeannettedixon2453 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      how do you think they manage in war time, over firing with good or bad coal will not make the fire any better too much coal only deadans the fire, all fire need air too burn right its the righ amount of air that needed for coal to burn right and how offen do you fire about every 2 to 3 minuits you only need 6 to 7 shovel full of coal in the bright spots in the fire box and keep your fire even all around the fire box W-D s like a thin fire, they steam better and if you take a long peace of copper wire round the blast pipe you get better steaming a old fire man trick

    • @david-othen
      @david-othen  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      anna jeannette Dixon You are absolutely correct - a little but often. The balance of air below and air above is very important too.

    • @jma7930
      @jma7930 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +anna jeannette Dixon shut up hes not overfiring u plonk, have u ever fired yourself. Plainly not cuz u have watched the vids on youtube. They act dif in real life its really not leaking that bad to be honist

    • @david-othen
      @david-othen  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +jma7930 The timing of the firing has to change if the burning characteristics of the coal change. As the British coal mines closed the SVR had to get coal from other countries and this caused problems as firemen adjusted to the different types of coal. Welsh steam coal needs to be put on the fire 10 minutes or so before the heat is needed whereas high BTU coals from Romania burn very rapidly and produce a lot of heat quickly.
