When I was a kid my friends family bought an Angus Bull with the intensions of raising it then slaughtering it for their family beef consumption. Well, they all got attached to the critter, they grazed it, grain fed it, rode it, and had a high hell-of-a-time with it, and got very attached to it. Then the love factor kicked in and they didn't have the heart to slaughter it because it turned into the family pet. Well, Angus the bull lived a very long life, as a happy bovine.
That's cute. I remember taking a class many years ago for wannabe farmers/homesteaders etc. from the PA Agriculture extension office. They said Rule 1 for any animal you intended to eat is Don't Name It.
I even know professional ranchers who make the bum calves into pets lol. There's definitely a difference between the herd and individual animals that we get to know. It is weird that most ranchers can slaughter without much sorrow (by the way, they don't kill the cows themselves usually), but get so attached to one particular pet cow. I can't imagine having only a few market livestock. I always thought the kids who did it in 4H were tough as nails, but there are a lot of tears in the beginning. It's also how a lot of farm kids pay for college, it's not just to "toughen" them. But if you eat meat, you and they have the same moral accountability. I prefer game meat, it's easier when you know the animal had a truly wild life first. Not that cows can or want to be wild lol.
Did they turn him into a steer? I missed that the first time I read this, they got a bull to be rideable? And lovey? That's the real headline! Altho totally understand if you left out the harvesting of his rocky mountain oysters!
@@montananerd8244 I'm in PA, lots of agriculture here, but I think more dairy than beef. We met a guy who had a couple of . . . can't remember if they were bulls or steers. I think they were bulls. He had another, I think this one was a steer, he was practically begging us to buy because he said he couldn't afford to have that many "pet" bulls/steers but he didn't want to send this one off to the butcher. It was very tempting to buy him and make an ox out of him, but not many jobs for oxen in Philly.
I Love this as if I had to raise one well we would just have to see how long Old Bessie or Moo would live😂❤❤❤❤
He's got a heart on his forehead ❤ it
I had to go back & look. Thanks for pointing that out. One of my cats was mostly white with one, large perfect heart on his side. (The other side had a map of South America). He was a special boy!
She calls Moose, the cow, that thinks he’s a horse a little puppy dog 😂
"She calls Moose, the STEER, that thinks he’s a horse a little puppy dog"
Fixed it for you.
Cow is a female that have had at least one calf. A steer is a castrated male bovine.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
The heart on his forehead is sweet.
I'm old, but when I was young my mother told me it was very common for people in the country to ride cows as if they were horses.
He's in damn good shape! Lean and
Graceful!
Bull riding set to "easy" mode!
Seriously, so sweet!
A tall ass cow 🫣
Any male animal and man will walk like that after his nuts was removed.
It's not a cow it's a bull turned into an ox.
The cow is on top.
I found this video to be very ‘Mooving’! 🥲
Your care and love have definitely ‘Steered’ him in the right direction. 🥰
I got no ‘beef’ with you, but it would ‘behoove’ you to not ‘hide’ your feelings so much! 😁

He's so beautiful
Used to show cattle . Would go to the pasture and catch a calf , wean it , halter break and train it and have it in the show ring in under a month. You would never try that with a horse in under six months
There's a guy in Alberta that has both a Texas longhorn and a bison that he rides. His youtube channel is called Bar JL Horse Training.
He's more than a steer. He's an ox. An ox is an educated steer.
@@steph_. An ox is a steer, usually of dairy breed lineage since beef steers are the ones that end up as hamburger. When the steer is trained it becomes an ox.
@@NavvyMom it has to be over 4 years of age and can be any sort of cattle
@@steph_. I know. I said they tend to be dairy breeds because the beef breeds end up as, well, beef. So you're welcome for setting you straight that it is a bovine.
Edit: And it probably takes at least four years to train it fully and let it get strong enough for a full load of work
I saw an oxen demonstration at the PA Farm Show some years back. They put them through their paces and explained things. At the end the guy said he was going to try something he'd never done before. He had his team on one side of the arena and walked to the other side, then called them to him. Without hesitation they crossed the arena to stand with him. I still get misty thinking about it. It demonstrated their intelligence and willingness and . . . It was just so cool.
A steer becomes a steer when they are castrated, training to work like a mule and now we have an ox.
He is such a good boy😊
I guess in the back of my mind I always assumed it was possible to ride a cow or steer, and I do mean RIDE, not "ride" as in how bulls are "ridden". But I am 50 years old and this is the first time I have actually seen it. -Seen people riding bison, zebra, maybe even a moose once (fuzzy memory), but a straight up dairy beast, no. And WHAT A DARLING HE IS!! I believe he would try his best to do anything you asked him to! -Looking forward to Moose's dressage debut video!
I’ve recently learned that Moose, I mean Moose the species, can also be tamed and ridden. A fellow in Russia does it.
I am adding this comment because of the questions and other comments in this video. Before cars oxen were used to pull wagons, ploughing and also for riding. It is funny how civilizations keep on making the same mistakes. We look at the Inkas and the Pyramids and wonder how this was done and we don't know for the same reasons people don't even know that we use to ride oxen just over a 100 year back. We are bad a documenting things. A 100 years from today someone is going to ride a ox and he is going to think he is the first person to ever do it.
You can't expect for everything to be common knowledge, there are also plenty of people who have no idea that world war 2 happened.
Awesomeness . He actually has a very smooth and stready gait. I can see now why people in the old days would work cows/ oxen and ride them arround like horses. Much love ❤️ 🙏
Great stuff....thank you for the smiles.....Jaks is a keeper...
You have a grt heart..thanks for showering so much of love and kindness..from india
🤣My boy is trying to dodge that Texas Roadhouse cattle truck!🤣
The connection of all animals especially seen as infants. He identified with the horses. Lovely story. I hope he will forever be who he wants to be and has his horse friends nearby!
@@MuhammadUsman-dj2sx I would love to visit this farm one day soon to see them. Are they open to visitors? Where is it located?
In the fifties my bull, Frankie , in the Redwood City, CA fourth July parade won a first for best comedy. I was at his birth and when he was old enough trained him as one would a horse including backing, neck reining, etc. He earned his keep by leaving his genes throughout the county. Wonder about Moose’s nose ring as it appears he has been cut, therefore not dangerous.
Maybe he had some wily teenage years - I see them on horned steers more often. Probably to control the horns if they do get wound up.
@@Nil-tz6gy possibly. I rode him with a modified bull halter. Frankie kept his beautiful horns but after two years servicing the girls he did loose his 😢 jewels . Do wish the owner of Moose would chime in.
So, good temperament and good genes? Wonder if a few of his line are still out there? Would be neat if they were!
@@melhawk6284 would like to think so but after 70 yrs they would be very diluted. Have you had experience with cattle?
@@maryannsilva4160 my uncle raised Herefords for eating. I learned young how mellow they could be if treated right. They knew me on sight, and I knew them all by name.

What a sweetheart!!!

Made me think of Mongo in Blazing Saddles. Only they're both much prettier lol.
That is so funny....... Where I am from, we ride bulls and horses at my grand parents farm.
When the horses were being used to get one section of cows from one pasture to another pasture, we would get on a bull and ride them instead.
The bulls they had was Zebu, they were docile, and swee as they could be!!
There was another seccion of cows that were the milk cows that had an Angus bull.
We also rode that bull....... He loved my father and would come up yo him as soon as he saw him. This was a cool bull. Nothing bothered him, and he loved coming up to where we were eating sugar cane and munch away with us.
[big sight]....... I miss those simple, natural days. 😢
Where you from? When? Wish we could remember together. Frankie was the result of my grandfather’s attempt at cross breading a perfect type of bovine for a small family farm.
It wasn't that unusual for a person to ride or rein bovine livestock in the old west. I guess it's just weird to modern eyes?
For me, it was a little bit because although you can physically ride a cow, no one even thinks of that since their purpose is meat and dairy products while horses are the more reliable animal for transportation. I guess bulls are the exception since they’re used for bull riding in rodeos.
If it's big and strong enough to ride, people are gonna try to ride it. Real Moose, Elk, Bison, Bears, it's all been done by somebody. But in modern times, it's all pretty cool, keeping that spirit alive.
Wonder if anyone's ever saddled up a big crocodile though? 🤔
@@genericalfishtycoon3853 putting a bit in that mouth would surely be a challenge.
So cute…I love cows! They are so inquisitive!🐄🐮🐄
Your going to start a movement, warms my heart......Moose has a great gait too!
I grew up on a cattle and grain farm and rode horses. Never in my life did I ever see anyone ride a steer let alone put a saddle on one and ride it. That steer is amazing.
To: JAKS Stables LLC --> Correction: If the critter is a male,,,, then he is NOT a "Cow". It is a steer. Cows have udders. 🙂
The ring on the cows nose looks awfully familiar
That hits my mind every time I see women with rings in their noses so often now. "Are they aware of this ?" I have to bite my tongue to avoid being a 'karen'.
He is a beautiful/ handsome boy, it’s love totally! 😍
OMG! A Corse (COw+hoRSE) rides better than a horse, of course! MORE please!
I loved the story and you all especially Moose. ❤😊
When I was a child my father would let me ride one of our cows😊
why the nose ring tho?? you said he’s super sweet and just a big puppy dog and they’re really painful for them.
How beautiful! That's amazing
Rings in the nose keeps them from tearing up the grass he needs to eat the grass
That is adorable
Huh? Rings in the nose are for control. They don't stop them from eating grass.
@@tatjanaeberhardinger2625 Tell me you know nothing about nose rings without telling me....
@@tatjanaeberhardinger2625 it's not about pain 🤦♀️they use them to lead them/direct them a bit easier, but if that animal was in pain that animal would buck her right on off due to a pain response.

You are all so blessed and privileged to love and care for these animals. I don't think you are going to hurt Moose by riding him. Maybe in time he will revert to being a cow again.
Good to see. Wow. Love to your gentle steer! J.
I have made a pet of a dairy cow on my partner at the times Dairy farm. She was so great I could whistle to her She would moo out to me out of the whole herd of dairy cows. I could walk up give her a cuddle I could get her to lay down, and she would quietly chew her cud while I lay against her in the sun, reading a book I used to face her, putting her in a headlock and scratching from her nose up to her eyes, which she loved. If I stopped, she would flip me off the ground (and I weighed over two hundred pounds at the time !) put me back down, and I would scratch her again if I stopped, same thing, she was so cool
Never seen something like that but I do like it 😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Oh my God, he’s so cute I am dying. He’s the cutest thing ever reply.
God bless you for giving him a nice life!
I would be curious to see moose "trained" and assessed in dressage. Trained in quotation cause I mean the most basic, starter, almost universal horsey skills training. He has what looks like a very eloquent gate or stride. The rest of his body language seems very assured, confident, and smart. Some horses can tap dance around a course but perform poorly cause they look like their doing it with reckless abandon and little control. Moose makes me think he could perform some dressage moves with a 'tuxedo wearing, suave dance partner that's totally got this' kinda vibe. I like his soul vibe as well.
Take that damn ring out of his nose!
This is the most timid bull I’ve ever seen
God bless you for giving him a nice lide!
Very cute.
Why the nose ring?
Coming from a multigenerational family of cattle ranchers, we have never put a nose ring in one of our cows or bulls noses.
He really belongs to the horse cow species. Ha! Ha! Ha! A cheerful animals to the community. Unique
This made my day thank you .god bless .
...the funny thing is he WALKS more like a horse too. Most cows have a much slower/stockier gate due to their size, but Moose literally matches the walking style of horses lol
That’s a great observation I can’t unsee it now lol! I wonder if he’s gaited 😂
I noticed that as well! Grew up on a Holstein dairy, he is exceptionally handsome overall for the breed.
Oh yeah I was looking to see if anyone wrote a comment about his gait and mannerisms. I noticed it but wasn’t sure if I was crazy or not. But it makes a lot of sense
Exactly my observation. His legs are longer -more horse-like. I ❤❤❤him
