  • Police Minister Bheki Cele says fighting crime requires a joint effort between communities and police. He addressed Gugulethu and Nyanga residents on Tuesday about increasing incidents of violent crime and mass shootings in these areas. Residents say police stations need more vehicles and more dedicated officers. Meanwhile, Action Society wants Cele fired and is accusing him of politicising crime. Nobesuthu Hejana reports. #DStv403

After 1992 and the 72% vote to abolish apartheid, I was hugged in shops by black people I barely knew. One woman said to me "I believed white people hated us, but now I see they love us". Race relations all round were at an all time high point. That lasted through most of the Mandela years. It took Mbeki to plant the seeds to destroy that closeness. Most ordinary people in this country have no problem with each other, it is just the loud mouths who make it seem race relations are bad.

He has no respect and obviously was racist towards that White gentleman who who had a right to speak his mind. He didn't speak like that to other speakers. No way...because not all freedom fighters are leaders. We should have had a 'get real' moment long ago when unqualified ministers who messed up the first dept they got back in 1994, were just continually reshuffled so that the same incompetence can ruin another portfolio. I mean seriously comrades, EVERYTHING is broken...housing, transport, electricity, water, SAA. Everything!!! Let's not even talk about unresolved land claims. And for the longest time we just been going about our lives like this shit's normal.
28 years they had...and sadly, in this time, our so-called leaders have done very little to improve people's lives in this country. It took them only 28yrs to tank the country and after 28 years of corruption and congratulating themselves for being the leaders, receiving undeserving high salaries every month a paycheck with some very lekker perks. How many of these FFs thought that maybe they need some education/skills to qualify to be responsible in and equipped for their roles. No because they felt that it was owed to them. And mind U, I am willing to bet they weren't necessarily the best freedom fighters, but maybe much better connected. Many of the true fighters are crying in their graves for what this govt has done to this beautiful country and her peoples.

The unprofessional manner in which the minister responded to a legitimate, valuable and honest input from an "on the ground" stakeholder, Action Society. The minister could have embraced this valuable feedback instead of letting his ego get in his way, behaving so unprofessionally and in return he has lost the opportunity to show that he cares. What will it take for political parties to work together with the real hero's, the NGO's and other bodies that do the hard lifting, the actual work to make a difference to people's lives.
