I think it's funny when the Windows/spec nerds scoff at mini LED and whine about the MBPs not having OLED, but in my option the mini LED MBP displays are still the best laptop displays available, for going on 4 years. The brightness is insane, no worries about burn in or degradation, perfect color, very little blooming, and ProMotion. Having said that, when Apple finally does switch to OLED I'm sure they'll get it right, and will almost surely go with tandem OLED.
Great video, I'm planning to return my MacBook Pro, I have the same M4 max full specs as yours. After setting up and everything, first thing I did is to check Davinci resolve, I put a single 5sec clip and applied speed ramp, the thing is lagging, playback speed is 15.6-19fps from a 25fps timeline. That's not what I'm expecting with the price I paid. I'm just trying to watch more reviews to see if someone has also experienced the same. Thanks
Bought the M1 Max 64GB/4TB/32 GPU cores on release day in 2021 and never looked back. The machine still blows my mind in terms of performance, especially for being a laptop that I use from the sofa or an airplane. The 64GB on my M1 Max allows me to run a pretty good quantization of 70B Llama3.1 LLM locally - My 3 year old machine runs close-to-ChatGPT quality AI locally, for free, even on battery and disconnected from the internet! Other than that, it handles all my requirements as a developer - Running multiple virtual machines simultaneously without breaking a sweat. As for gaming, Baldur's Gate 3 runs at high quality and high fps with the right settings Judging from Geekbench 6 benchmarks, it appears that the max-specced M4 Max will be about 75% faster across the board than my machine - In terms of single-core, multi-core and GPU improvement alike. This is a crazy good improvement for 3 years, from an already crazy good starting point. What kind of use cases do people actually have to warrant an upgrade from previous generations? If you want high-fps gaming for modern games, sure, but other than that?
Looked like a 6 db difference in fan noise, which might seem negligable until you understand a 6 db increase is twice as loud. (56 db is twice as loud as 50 db - it's a logarithmic scale). Those are the absolute numbers though. Perception is a whole other dimension. Meaning it may or may not matter to you.
I want to ask about something. I am a guy who bought a 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max, and it has been very good for me all these years. So, my question is, is upgrading to the M2 Max worth it? Because all I see is that there are just new ports and a new chip.
Might have been a typo, but I see you have written M2 Max. Also, it might very well be worth it depending on what you do, for example AI work could probably get a boost from the extra maximum unified memory and the memory bandwidth. The CPU is also really fast, even faster than the Core Ultra 9 285K and Ryzen 9950X (Those are both desktop chips btw)

I have the M1 Pro 16" base model from day-1 of release. I am feeling the performance degradation these days, and I know most of it is from memory consumption. I think the M4 Pro 48gb model is the perfect system to make the upgrade to. *Context* - I am a software engineer and do a lot of software development work (app development, AI projects) as well as the usual stuff (heavy multi-tab Chrome, Safari, productivity apps all open at once) and I feel the sluggishness now. The *3x memory size* increase is huge for me. M4 Max is probably overkill for me given I don't do video/photo editing (even though I want to start getting into that).
As we grow higher in these M chips We are getting really close to the disadvantages of a similar PC laptop. 🤔 Now, the M4 got fast enough to play more complex 3D games well, but with that power we also go the HEAT and NOISE levels of the Windows gaming laptop. Loved the way that the M1 pro in my MPB 16 was so fast and quiet and consumed hardly any power...
A Mac mini with a decent monitor screen and a iPad Pro 11 with the pencil pro would be my perfect hybrid set up. £599 / £999 / £130 + a monitor would give the MacBook Pro a run for value for money.
Makes me wonder how the other variants perform in terms of fan noise. I hope they focus on that with the re-design, optimizing the cooling, rather then trying to slim it down. But I really wish they would add a display-port. And a 4th Thunderbolt-port, or make the magsafe at least USB-4 or thunderolt 4, so it could be used both to expand the number of ports, but also for those that don't need a lot of ports, be the best possible docking solutions.
Apple seriously didn't market the nano-texture enough. If I knew it was that drastic and that good, I would have upgraded to it. I pre-ordered thinking it wouldn't be that much a difference. Major regret now...
I'm coming from a 2019 i9 16" and my 14" M4 Max 16c will be coming today. Do you think it will be AMAZINGLY FAST or IMPRESSIVELY FAST compared to my slow 2019 one?
When you compared the nano to the regular the colour on the top of your browser is completely different on the nano compared to the standard. Everything else is fine, but that looks like a big deal. Did you amend any settings or anything

I am an Apple user and need to upgrade phone and tablet. Can you get the same seamless syncing across devices with a Samsung phone and tablet automatically as you can with Apple devices? Thank you for any advice on this
Under-display cameras are 2-3 years away, so Apple will keep this design until the redesign in Q4 2026. That redesign will hopefully also have Tandem OLED.

How is the text crispness on the nano texture? Lots of concerns that it is a big compromise. However, that seemed to be based on nano-texture on other devices
CEX is good and all for your pocket and the environment. My only issue is that on two occasions they claimed my pixel 8 pro was a C grade because of a minuscule mark on the screen that not I or even they initially noticed but then sold the same phone as a B grade. They did the same with a Samsung Book 4 Pro 360 said it was B grade because the type C port I used to charge the device had a mark of the charger but then were selling the same device as A grade the very next day 😅😂. Needless to say the experience put me off.
I am replacing my 2017 iMac Pro (with a powerful eGPU) with either the M4 Max MBP or an M4 Max Studio (when available.) Thanks for the video. I'm mainly on Premiere pro. Should I get Max or Pro? If I go for max is there a significant improvement in scrubbing h265 4k 10 bits video and exporting time?
The only difference you may notice is while exporting because max models have 2 encoder and decoder engine while pro have 1... In timeline scrubbing there will be 0 difference unless you are editing 8k 120f without and proxies

@@Thetechchap Well Better display mod also allows you to modify a bunch of stuff, and even control brightness and colors of your monitor. It also give you the option to do 100% scaling pixel to pixel, so everything is super small, instead of the more room option apple gives you
That also destroys color accuracy. I love Better Display though.
@@white.lodge.dale.cooper Yes but not as much as you think, you won’t notice
The TechChap is the best!
Now, the M4 got fast enough to play more complex 3D games well, but with that power we also go the HEAT and NOISE levels of the Windows gaming laptop.
Loved the way that the M1 pro in my MPB 16 was so fast and quiet and consumed hardly any power...
What mic and camera did you use to make this video?
I need to get myself a deeper desk, where did you get yours?
Is it worth spending money nowadays for year on year upgrades on any of the devices not only your laptops but your smartphones, headsets etc.
Does the nano display reduce specular highlights during HDR10 and Dolby Vision movie playback? thanks.
Apple seriously didn't market the nano-texture enough.
If I knew it was that drastic and that good, I would have upgraded to it. I pre-ordered thinking it wouldn't be that much a difference.
Major regret now...
Apple has a 2 week return policy IIRC. You can use the one you ordered while waiting on another with the nano display and then return the original.
Nice work!
Is it lame that I want to wait for the M5 because I can't afford a BMW M5. Im struggling in Aus the m4 max without mods hit 6499...insane money.
I'm coming from a 2019 i9 16" and my 14" M4 Max 16c will be coming today. Do you think it will be AMAZINGLY FAST or IMPRESSIVELY FAST compared to my slow 2019 one?
It will be neither IMPRESSIVELY nor AMAZINGLY fast; it will be MIND-NUMBINGLY fast.
When you compared the nano to the regular the colour on the top of your browser is completely different on the nano compared to the standard. Everything else is fine, but that looks like a big deal. Did you amend any settings or anything
I think it’s just a appearance setting for the desktop, nothing to do with nano
wonder if the nano texture stops the coating from coming off from the keyboard when its closed?
Do you think the nano texture display makes the color black up pure lighter and text appear less sharp?
I haven’t experienced that
For 500 frames ripple dreams on 14” 40 core gpu m3 max I got 4m 20s.
This was the greatest laptop ever made until the m4 max 14” released.
This is Eevee though. You really need to do a cycles test. See the time per frame difference and let me know.
If you can do the classroom demo under cycles demo files in the blender page.
I am an Apple user and need to upgrade phone and tablet. Can you get the same seamless syncing across devices with a Samsung phone and tablet automatically as you can with Apple devices? Thank you for any advice on this
Good Cafe Nero product placement 💥
I didn’t even think about it lol. Now I need them to sponsor
so is it really a new chip or just the same chip running at a higher clock. hmm.
I want the notch gone before I will buy.
Under-display cameras are 2-3 years away, so Apple will keep this design until the redesign in Q4 2026. That redesign will hopefully also have Tandem OLED.
First of all, appreciate your sharing.
Looks like it can make sure Thunderblot 5 can drive two monitors through the docking.
hope that can have the MBP M4 test~i would like to understand whether M4 can get the same way or not~
Currently on my 16” M1 Max 10/32 2TB/64 config. Time to upgrade?
no, you still have a great computer
Is it worth to buy non-nano texture and takşn en external matte protector or still worth 150 for the original one
How do you see the temp monitor area in 10:52? Is that an external application?
Non British guy here who enjoyed learning a new phrase - higgledy piggledy - today! 😁🙋🏻♂️
You’re welcome!
How is the text crispness on the nano texture?
Lots of concerns that it is a big compromise. However, that seemed to be based on nano-texture on other devices
Not at all, I have them both side by side here and it looks exactly the same
I don't want to be dirty, But I was so scared when you mentioned the name of the Sponsor brand.
filthy 😂
CEX is good and all for your pocket and the environment. My only issue is that on two occasions they claimed my pixel 8 pro was a C grade because of a minuscule mark on the screen that not I or even they initially noticed but then sold the same phone as a B grade.
They did the same with a Samsung Book 4 Pro 360 said it was B grade because the type C port I used to charge the device had a mark of the charger but then were selling the same device as A grade the very next day 😅😂.
Needless to say the experience put me off.
What is this temperature and consumption tracking program?
I ordered it without the nano texture and now im not sure if I should change it or just get a screen protector
Bro got scammed with that 285k, worse than 14900k. Might as well have a gotten an X3D or a 9950X.
Great review.
Glad you enjoyed it
What Shortcut do you use in your Browser for GPT? Just a bookmark?
I am replacing my 2017 iMac Pro (with a powerful eGPU) with either the M4 Max MBP or an M4 Max Studio (when available.) Although I don’t want or need a laptop, this MBP looks like it’s perfect for all the things I want to accomplish. I already have 3 Apple monitors that I currently use. I obtained the Kensington TB5 unit so I’d be good to go out of the box.
5:24 😂😂😂
Thanks for your Cex! hahaa
Thank you for this review!!! I was wondering about the Cinebench 24 multi-core score and the heating due to more P cores. Depends on people's tolerance for heat, but it does provide great performance that beats the best non-Apple desktop CPUs.
It is also great to see that Apple is finally feeding it's chips more power. Especially the GPU.
So i need an adapter usb A to usb C so i can use my accessories since there is no usb A port on this laptop?
Thanks for the video.
Definitely Pro
At 10:49, what app is that for the temp monitor? I use iStatistica Pro, but I like your interface better.
Look how happy he is!
