Yes, back when I was writing a lot about music I used to tell people that Daniel Ash was one of my top 5 favorite guitarists of all time. Right up there with Mick Ronson, James Williamson and a couple others whose names I forget now. Not just his playing. The look, the attitude, everything. He was really special.
Bauhaus is one of the greatest bands known to man. Their influence on me, and other musicians, is massive. There was no one like Bauhaus, before Bauhaus; and there will never be another. They are arguably 1 of 2 most important bands of that era - the other being Joy Division.
Bauhaus are one of my favorite bands because they are so singular. The band is much more then a "Goth" band. You can see what MOR Goth bands lifted from them, but Bauhaus had many more colors then what you see on the outside. They deserve to be as known and celebrated as The Cure, U2 or Depeche Mode, but in actuality, are still an underground, known but in general unknown, musical phenomenon. It makes them feel like they are mine
You should be happy that you were at such an amazing show. If you were/are anything like me - youth was definitely NOT wasted on you or I; I enjoyed every bit of it, to the extreme.
Peter proceeds to sing "Now I am silly..." with a bad mic. Now that is a true performance that brings the lyrics to life lol In all seriousness, though, this song and this performance rocks!
Bauhaus. Heard them first in the early eighties a couple years after they had broken up and I was never the same. These live performances def one of the contributing factors. Get all their albums. Listen closely. Few bands of their time reached the sublime heights they consistently did. The varied sounds they managed are also certainly a factor in their notability. They should be a household name. But one advantage that they are not: you get to keep them a little closer to your breast than you might otherwise.
I love that. Bauhaus are known by quite a few, but in truth, unknown to those that stop at Bela Lugosi. Seeing them live feels like an intimate family reunion. I love that they never really hit the heights of The Cure, U2, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan or New Order. Loving them feels personal. You know if you see someone in a Bauhaus tee that they are likely that persons favorite and that person has spent endless hours absorbing their music
I got to see these guys in 1997 in Detroit, MI. These guys put on a hell of a show, very close to how Alice Cooper does shows, it was a treat I will never forget.

Acho que eu devo ser a única pessoa do mundo que não acho ele parecido nem com o David Bowie e muito menos com o Nick Cave. Ele tem uma aparência única, aparência do "Peter Murphy", não de qualquer outra pessoa
Think you’ve got ur chronology wrong & analogy backwards: Bauhaus already broke up by the time Nick started... It’s Nick Cave who’s the wealthy man’s Peter Murphy!
Iggy Pop? David who? Thx for the great video but for ****'s sake, have a heart, will you? Neither would dare double or otherwise nor have a poetic mind as Peter.
I know I'm going to piss off a lot of people here, (of the 7 who may actually read this,) but I always thought Bauhaus was a poor imitation of the Cramps, or Iggy, whom everyone imitated...

If he could've seen himself right now at almost 60 years old OVERWEIGHT doing these exact same moves wearing a fucking THONG to boot he probably would have fucking CRIED at the PARODY that he's become ( when that was the very LAST thing- he used to swear in interviews- wanted Bauhaus to ever end up like and it doesn't fucking "matter" if he's doing Bauhaus "solo", either!!!... ) So in my view this GOD on stage at 24 has NOTHING to do with the "current" one!!!....
Danial Ash's guitar sound is Awesome !! I can tell you nobodys sound was like that back then. The whole band was talented and very original.

Reminds me of Gang if 4 guitar work only more so, brilliant stuff. Saw them live once never to be forgotten

@nitegoat1369 - Yes it was excellent, so many good bands in the 80's, if I could I'd go back and see The Birthday Party live.

@3:12 Peter's mic stopped working and he was silly, silly.
Went to see them in about '83 somewhere like Hammersmith Palais and this is exactly how I remember them. What am amazing gig.

Damn, Peter Murphy was a Goddess in his own right....xxx
Why Goddess as opposed to God though? lol
Never heard a telecaster sound just like Mr. Ash's. Tone fits perfectly within this song

'.. that redundant effigy. .is a god. .' love this song!!!!...and this band....
Go and look for the dejected once proud
Idol remembered in stone aloud
Then on coins his face was mirrored
Take a look it soon hath slithered
To a fractured marble slab, renunciation clad
His nourishment extract from his subjects
That mass production profile
He's a God in an alcove
Once he spread the rain
So they dreamt in vain
Once he spread the wheat
Had made garlands for his feet
Until the lily poet of our times
Horizoned on the line
Love became the in theme then
Opposing fakers thrice by ten
Don't perceive his empty plea
That redundant effigy
He's a God in an alcove
Take in view his empty stool
What's left is satin cool
Clawing adornment for his crimes
They saw they had to draw the line
So they sent him far away
So they sent him far away
To a little alcove
To a little alcove
All alone
He's a God, a God
Now i'm silly
Now i'm silly
Silly, silly, silly ...
aw have a heart, Murphy is his own thing
