In about 1978 I was in a friend's car in a storm, and as he drove into the driveway of a parking building through standing water, we unexpectedly felt a huge and disconcerting bump. Later, when we left, the water was gone and we saw the manhole cover was dislodged, and he'd driven into the open hole without seeing it.
He’s lucky that didn’t tear up his engine! I once drove through a pothole the size of a moon crater in Baltimore, and it knocked my engine completely out of whack! The #3 cylinder in the engine was never the same after that, and the damn thing finally threw a rod four years later!
@@Takeshi357 Weight of the cover depends on the municipality. Some covers do weigh as much as 250 pounds, some weigh only 90 pounds. We have a long downhill street that has a manhole cover that use to pop out of the hole quite often during heavy rain storms. We put in a heavy 250 pound cover to prevent it from "popping". You lift them out with a truck bed mounted crane.
It looks like a 30 inch manhole cover, with an area of 706.9 square inches. If it weighs 150 lb, a pressure of 0.212 lb or 3.3 oz per square inch would lift the manhole cover. This is 1.4% greater than atmospheric pressure. Not much at all.
Hopefully your neighborhood has a separate sewer system (storm runoff and household sewage in separate lines). Because it sure would be nasty having something like that splashing up in your basement.
A slug of water that filled the pipe (literally) was moving at incredible velocity causing the air in the pipe to be pushed out - thats why the cover was dancing - and when it finally made it there - KA-BOOM.
That's cool but check out the one that flies about 20 stories in the air, literally gets launched! Interrupts a news interview but like a boss the man yells.. _heads up!_
What strikes me most is people that see the cover off the manhole and do nothing... just sit and watch and record it or drive by. The dog is the smartest creature in this video.

The pressure coming from that storm sewer pipe must have been ASTRONOMICAL. Manhole covers are VERY heavy (around 250 pounds or so, or so I've read).
They're not _THAT_ heavy. If they weighed 250 pounds, nobody would be able to even lift them!
@@Takeshi357 they’re like 150

I have never before heard about a barking manhole.

That's why you need to have backflow prevention valves.
This is why I always ask my town about paving curbs when they pave the roads where I live.
That dog tho! 🤣😂 Acting like the manhole cover is his mortal enemy! 🐕
It is
Yeah, I would be barking too if that happened to me
Storm covers are a certain weight so that when pressure gets to a certain amount, they pop off. It sends water on the street to clear the pipe.
Not always manhole covers are thought through like that. With the amount of cheap contractors you’re actually very incorrect.
a beautiful demonstration of a velocity head.
Meanwhile that one guy doing a haunted sewer pipe vid
Bark translation = "Alert! Alert! Dog protecting home from unseen evil forces. Send reinforcements!"
Probably a demon
It's like my explosive diarrhea!
Z Corndog The manhole cover is your buttplug?
The dog😁has me laughing, such a funny dog😁👍
Plot twist: the dog is recording while complaining about the manhole.
tells me the drains lines under the street are too small pressure should not build up like that if they were properly sized.
Just so you know the kind of forces involved here - manhole covers typically weigh around 100 to 200 pounds!!!
I’ve lifted a manhole cover with one arm so your incorrect.
@@WELLINGTON20you do realize manhole covers vary in weight right

It sounds like You're really pissed off at that man hole cover!
It’s even worse than you think - that looks like it’s combined sewer + stormwater.
Dog: "That water's lucky I'm in this house, boy oh boy..."
The dog haha!
that dog was pissed!!!
Now the Ninja Turtles lost ALL their water!
i was expecting it to shoot into the sky
Maybe the Sewer was not big enough to carry all the rainwater from the flood and it just backed up instead of exiting in St. Florida State
That thing must have flew at least 13 inches in the air!
They go even higher if the pressure's higher.
Tuner: "its fine, olny 1PEi fo boost!"
The head with only '1 psi of boost': 0:03
Call police or authorities.
I don't know who was more mad the dog, or the manhole
When the fat guy has his 10th serving of taco bell:
Good thing nobody was hurt during this!
Damn I bet we’ve had this happen again since. Won’t stop raining here in Denver.
Can’t really blame the dog for flipping out like that-I’m just glad dogs don’t speak English, or the volley of cussing would make even _my_ ears curl!
the ocean is returning to colorado
Good Boy !!!
Good Dog !!!!
You get steak tonight
Dogs don't bark for nothing.
CSO - THE EXIT IS NOT LARGE ENOUGH, AND THE PRESSURE BUILDS UP AND BLOWS THE MANHOLES OFF, AND THERE IS RAW SEWAGE IN THERE WITH THE STORM WATER
What were you told regarding this by the city utilities?
Never mess with water. You’ll regret it.
Imagine falling into one
No thank you.
When the street gets diarrhea.
Lol reminds me of a waterline busting on our street! It shot a blast of water into the air nearly 50 feet high lol!
I bet that is telecom and not sewer. Seen the same thing happen in a Denver monsoon before
So that's the reason why I ate too much Taco Bell.... God I shit so much that the manhole cover lifted off it's ring
Where the dog barking at??
After 10 shots of vodka
That was a "launch"? Major fail.
Chernobyl but water
Lifts, not launches.

Did ya really need the dog barking?

That wasn’t a sewer that was an electrical line. But yeah I saw that it was crazy!
Careful. Don't let post 10 see this.

Is really storm water, or is it poo? We will never know.
