I often hear that chickens are the modern day descendants of dinosaurs, but seeing the way they stalk you around the perimeter during the entire tour really outs that in perspective. 😂😂😂
Brussel sprouts are heavy feeders, fertilize throughout the year, then cut the top off once the sprouts begin to develop. Recommend abandoning growing squash amongst the corn as it is a heavy feeder too, and the squash & such is probably taking too much nutrients and moisture to grow healthy corn. Beans need to be fertilized, curling leaves in beans typically means stressed for nutrients. Love your garden, nice variety, and some good ideas and recommendations. I've been growing go Plum Regal for years, and just like you, I've had huge success with them.
I've learned to be very patient with Brussels - give them until your first hard freeze. The rest of the garden will be put to bed before I harvest mine. 😉
Thank you for keeping your videos coming! I am on my way to Minnesota, around Duluth, and gardening is on my agenda for next spring. I'll be checking in regularly to see how you winter your garden. 😊
@thehomesteadingrd Have you ever tried leaving your cabbage plant after harvest with some lower leaves, allowing 5 small cabbages to develop? The already established plant will push out the new min cabbage heads that in total weigh more than the original.
I live here in southern Minnesota. My eggplant went gangbusters this year. I have 2 plants and i have eggplant coming out my ears. I just descpvered your channel. Great gard we n.
Garden is looking great, good work! We are zone 4 in Minnesota and posted a video on our (early) harvest a few days ago. Looking forward to seeing more updates!
💚👍 Brussel sprouts no bueno here, and sweet potatoes. Not as bad as growing lavender from seed. Hope your back is feeling better. Ryan dig them potatoes for her.💚✌️
Shoot! So sorry to hear your Brussels aren’t doing so great either. Thanks for checking in on my back ❤️. Still rough going… I think I’ll have my dad harvest those potatoes while he’s visiting this weekend!
😂it’s a game of Twister in my garden. I’m greedy also with 17” paths. This is the first I’ve ever had aster yellow on marigolds and calendula. I only knew about it from other people. I have to use netting on brassicas as the moths are flying. Wow, that’s a lot of kraut! 😅. I should do that with last one. Only did a few so far. Maybe use curry recipe again. Wow again on State Fair cabbage! I grow Dagan Brussels and they were huge in clay beds. I planted too early so they are done now and aphids got under netting. You can top them to get them to fill out. I normally like to harvest after frost, but was too early and rain advanced them so picked early. The celery looks good! Mine I forgot to shade and I’m sure they are tuff. It’s extremely hot today real feel temp reached 105*F 🥵. So I’m YouTubing 😅.
I am 3b and have always had trouble growing brussel sprouts. My only consolation is that the leaves do taste like the sprouts so you can cook the leaves to retain the taste. It must have so something to do with timing
Beautiful garden. The cabbage is fabulous. I would have cabbage steaks and freeze some. I love cabbage :) But not sauerkraut??? Love sweet and sour slaw.
Nice!! About the corn, I almost wanted to try my hand at growing sweet corn since it’s my favorite vegetable in the summer time, I quickly realized that my garden in backyard is too small for a big kinda ginormous corn stalk. Maybe I’ll have to extend the garden spot or wait until I get a bigger house (hopefully bigger yard.
Yeah you definitely need some space to grow corn, especially since you need a block of at least 4 rows for adequate pollination. Sounds like a good reason to expand the garden! ✨
You could try making some Kimchi with your big cabbage. We made some two years ago with ours and it was great, I don't like spice so I had to make a couple jars in a less spicy version but it was delicious!
Please do update us on how you like those purple potatoes. My wife and I really do like the flavor and texture of the purple taters best of all the ones we grow, but unfortunately, they never yield nearly as much as our russets and yukon golds. So we tend to grow at least those 3 at the same time.
Do you really rip out plants when you are done with them, or do you cut them off at the base and leave the roots to decompose so you can retain all of the beneficial soil microbes?
Are you going to set clear totes over those baby brassicas to give them more time to grow? I loppped off my squash a couple of weeks ago, mostly because they were trying to grow through the fence into the neighbor's yard. Appreciate the tip on snipping growth tips off the pepper plants to speed ripening, first year growing them, so I'll probably snip mine this coming week...snipped my tomatoes last week.
I practice crop rotation in my 3b garden (SK) and have always understood and noted that beans should not immediately follow a garlic crop. Perhaps the odd bean foliage growth is a result of that?
The bunnies found my chives and ate them down to stubs but I'm not even mad about it. I got plenty from that plant before they enjoyed themselves. Question: Do you have to start your peppers from seedlings every year or do they come back? I have heard that pepper plants can be perennial but probably that is in the warmer areas.
How do you protect your crops from gophers/moles/voles? In I'm socal and gophers tunnel all over my property i have specific things i do, I'm just curious what others do
I am curious as to which variety of Brussell Sprouts have done well for you? I struggle with them as well, so looking for a new variety to try since i am in the same area as you.
How far North are you? I'm in the south metro, also having brussel sprout issues (no srouts yet., but we still have hot weather for another few weeks).
Northern Wisconsin grower (4a), same with my Brussel Sprouts. I have beautiful looking plants, but no sprout formation. My mom is the next zone down, and only one of her six plants have sprouts. I also had a few onions bolt, and the worst onion harvest I've ever had. It's been a hard year for growing here!

Hahaha pretty much! Tiny raptors for sure!
So glad I stumbled on your channel. I am in zone 4 in South Dakota! It’s nice to have someone with similar temps to watch :)
I'm so glad you found me!

Take the leaves off the stem. The energy will go into making bigger brussel sprouts

Good morning from Forest lake Minnesota! Great episode!
Morning! Thank you!!!
Thank you for keeping your videos coming! I am on my way to Minnesota, around Duluth, and gardening is on my agenda for next spring. I'll be checking in regularly to see how you winter your garden. 😊
It's nice seeing another garden in MN. Most videos I watch they are in warmer climates. I'm in SE MN.
There's not many of us up in MN! Nice to meet you!
New subscriber here, and i loved watching your garden tours. If you take request, i'd enjoy watching a winter squash harvest video😬
awesome, so big vegetables
👏👏👏so happy to see you hope your back is much better ❤❤🕊️
❤️❤️❤️
What happen to her back?😢😢
The big cabbage is amazing. And so beautiful. I'm proud of you too. It's nice. Wow.
Thank you so much 🤗
Thanks for the tour,i always enjoyed a good garden tour.. thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🫶🏼
I catch as many cabbage moths as a can. Love my big butterfly net. I hope it makes a difference.
Canned coleslaw is great for using a bumper crop of cabbage.

Interesting! I’ll have to give that a try sometime. Thank you!

Wow!! That’s wild!! I’m glad you managed to grow them at least 🫶🏼
Those itty bitty brussell sprouts seem like they would be more tasty when little

How fun! Love meeting other local gardeners ☺️

That’s good to know! Maybe with this cool rainy season it’s just not panning out for the Brussels.
Beautiful garden. The cabbage is fabulous. I would have cabbage steaks and freeze some. I love cabbage :) But not sauerkraut??? Love sweet and sour slaw.
Do you ever eat the turnup greens? If not, you should try them. They’re delicious. I’m in Minnesota. I’ll take them if you don’t want them.
Nice!!

We’re eating them this week and yes the yield is lower but they are tasty! Some rodent damage
Good farm 😊😊😊😊

BT is awesome for the worms (cabbage worm)
It sure is! I still prefer to hand pick/smash but if they get out of control I’ll definitely pull it out
Im zone 4 in Superior WI

Marigolds rule! For color and pest control 👍🤠
Love them!!!!
Hi 😊😊😊
Have you ever saved your pepper plants by digging them up and putting them in a pot over winter?
No, I haven’t tried that yet. We definitely don’t have any room to overwinter them in our tiny cabin right now
No slug problems with your kale or other brassicas? What flowers do you plant around them for a repellent?
Do you still have time for spinach? It's pretty fast growing and frost tolerant. Plus it freezes well.
Love that idea! Thanks!
Do you have any fridge pickle recipes that you could share?
I sure do! It’s on my website 🫶🏼
Are the baby cabbages a special variety or just young plants?
I practice crop rotation in my 3b garden (SK) and have always understood and noted that beans should not immediately follow a garlic crop. Perhaps the odd bean foliage growth is a result of that?
Ooo that’s a good point! I’ll have to refer back to my garden book to verify. Thank you 🫶🏼

Question: Do you have to start your peppers from seedlings every year or do they come back? I have heard that pepper plants can be perennial but probably that is in the warmer areas.
I personally start my peppers from seed every spring. I know people who have overwintered peppers indoors, but I haven’t tried it.
Mine made it all winter long and survived aphids, only to be taken out by the heat. I have an indoor greenhouse.
You said fridge pickles last up to a year in the fridge... do you happen to have a recipe for that please?.... 😊
I sure do! It’s on my website 🫶🏼
Do you have any trouble with flea beetles, aphids, or grasshoppers? Those are my big problems 😣
I love butterut squash, hove many did you plant in your garden?
I had 8 plants
@thehomesteadingrd ❤️
How do you protect your crops from gophers/moles/voles? In I'm socal and gophers tunnel all over my property i have specific things i do, I'm just curious what others do
Have you considered a cover crop like crimson clover for your empty beds?
Ooo I haven’t but that sounds awesome
I am curious as to which variety of Brussell Sprouts have done well for you? I struggle with them as well, so looking for a new variety to try since i am in the same area as you.
I usually grow Dagan F1 and have had good success with them!
@@thehomesteadingrd Thank you.
I’m wondering if the chicken fence keeps rabbits out of the garden.
It sure does!
