We're also missing the immense, localized network of relatives (...and servants of some variety) that families have taken for granted for millenia. It is an extemely modern phenomenon that a woman, solo, would care for her children and the entire domestic load without the physical, emotional, and spiritual support of other women (grandmother, in laws, aunts, unwed sisters, cousins, servants, etc.) in the same home.

I don't know what set of rose-colored glasses you see the past in but you are simply incorrect. Servants would be employed by a tiny percentage of Catholics. Grandparents may either have been deceased, ill, caring for their OWN younger children, out of the area and/or simply unwilling. Men are often required to leave their original home to find work that pays enough to support a wife and family. The period of American history when men moved to the frontier in the 19th century : "Go West, young man", attests to this. Why would a mother of a large family herself, assume DUTIES that are not rightfully hers? You imply perhaps unwittingly, that relatives are duty-bound to assist and that is simply not true. Help may be available from families of origin but it is a blessing, not an entitlement and it is limited by time, resources and state in life. Siblings of the married couple would have families of their own, still be in school and/or working to contribute to family income and save for their own future. As for "cousins in the same home", when? and where, the Kennedy compound, maybe. Men who can't support families should not marry, it's that simple. Women who are incapable of caring for their own children without perpetual help from others are not suited for motherhood. These are the harsh facts of life and common sense and a grasp of ACTUAL history and economics would help.

This is so true!! As a mom with 5 adult children who are handicapped, a sixth deceased by the same disease and 6 other now adult children married and on their own I can attest to the lack of anyone to fulfill the needs of a mom alone for many years raising and caring for healthy and handicapped children. God does, indeed, provide but there is much hardship without extended family as were there in past generations

You're never passed the age to get married. Children now that's a different story. But the means to an end are the salvation of spouses. there are plenty of married couples whose vocation is marriage and they cannot have children. Being single is not a sacrament. So much more to gain from the sacraments. There is a video the talks about the vocations and how in the natural law majority of people are called to marriage. It's very rare that a person is called to single life. Most people that are drawn to it and or they make a decision to stay single... That's where the singleness life comes in. This is what I've learned watching videos and from my own spiritual director 🤗🙏

My mother worked during my whole childhood convinced that she needed the health insurance for me. Granted the only reason I was sick was because I was constantly out of the home for childcare. Fast forward to today, I've been out of the house for 7 years now and still have two siblings at home. She is still working when I call her at 6:30pm, constantly miserable and complaining about how she HAS to work despite having a husband who makes much more than her and pays ALL bills. When I suggested that she homeschool my very young sister in hopes that she could actually bond with one of her children while she still has the chance, guess what got primacy over that blessing. My mother and I have zero relationship because she was convinced that turning me into a feminist with career "goals" over a righteous marriage and blessed family life was a good idea. Let's just say that backfired, I'm marrying an older stable, loving man who wants me safe at home to care for our future family. All she can muster is "what do you "do" all day. Her lack of acceptance hurts but I already lived through the hell of having a mother treat motherhood as some sort of side job to prepare me for "the real world".

    • @chrisowens6530

I understand. I'm 52. After my parents divorced, I lived with my Grandparents until I was 9. She worked almost all of her life because she would not be controlled by someone else. This continued after she remarried. Because she was gone a lot and had placed work over family, she and I never really bonded. There were other issues that came in to play here as well. When I had children, I still had to work along side my husband to make ends meet. I tried to be a good mother to my children remembering what I missed. She commented that I was a better mother than she was. I know in my heart that if I didn't have their father in our lives things would have been vastly different and it wouldn't haven't been for the better. From one mother to another, I ache for her and what she missed. Although we have nothing in common, I still love her and try to pray for her.

Still…you probably don’t know the details of your parent‘s marriage.
There must be an underlying issue which hasn’t been addressed.
We women tend to react to men. Meaning, much of our actions, can be a direct result of their actions (not blaming your dad or anything, just pointing that out).
If we women aren’t wanting to stay home for the majority of the time and just concentrate on our kids and home, then there are 100% other issues going on.
I’m convinced that we’re generally wired to just want to nurture and protect our children, once we have them. It’s like we change once they’re born and we’re forced to grow up mentally a lot more.
So, if a woman is running away from that (even though she financially doesn’t have to ) then there’s something else going on.
Just some food for thought. 😊

You'll never find the perfect spouse. My parents espouse the same points that you are making, but all four of their children are old, unwed, and miserable because they waited too long. Something I think they, and possibly you, forget is that marriage is about GROWTH. Plant two saplings close to one another and they will intertwine and become like one tree. Try doing planting two mature trees next to one another and they will sooner crack then bend. A good foundation is ALL that is needed to build the marriage.

I dont agree with this sermon of Fr. Chapperger because there are several writings of Saints that said the opposite...here is the Cure of Ars talking about the Catholic matrimony..and he says that the majority of catholic matrimonies are sacrileges. St Cure of Ars sermon about matrimony Second Sunday of Epiphany. "the majority of the catholic matrimonies are sacrileges "
(I found the sermon in Spanish on website from the Book of the Sermons of the Cure of Ars. But I could not find it in English. Ordered the book in English at a Catholic book store. This sermon was not there, no sure why it was not there, because is part of the collections of sermons of the cure of Ars. The sermon might be on one of the 1960 books sermon of the cure of Ars books. The new one does not have this sermon. But I found the sermon in Spanish. This is a summary of his sermon. ( I translated it in English)
Ahh..if of 30 matrimonies were only 3 celebrated with the dispositions necessaries to receive the grace of this sacrament, this will be a great thing.
What is the result of all of these profanations? OH GOD, the expectacule of so many of these people that enter on this sacrament only to go to hell. SO what is my purpose of this? First, show to the ones that already enter this sacrament of matrimony the faults that they have committed and to prevent the ones that are thinking about entering this sacrament on the dispositions necessary to get it. Nobody doubts that we can find salvation on the states of lives that GOD has determine to each soul, while we carry the dispositions that are required by GOD, that way if in our state of like we perish, means we did not enter that state of life with the right dispositions. But we know that are states of life that have more difficulties that others and this is the vocation of matrimony. It is the state of life that is received in the worse dispositions. On the sacrament of matrimony from which depends the happiness or the sadness/tribulations for eternity for the ones who received it, far from preparing for it with sanctity. It appears that the couples put a lot of effort on accumulating crime after crime to receive this sacrament. It looks like they are not even afraid to commit terrible things to deserve curses from GOD. To have unhappy marriage for all their lives and prepare a life of hell in this life and for eternity.
The majority of the couples that enter the sacrament of matrimony, consumed their condemnation for eternity by committing three sacrileges. They profane the sacrament of reconciliation, then the Eucharistic sacrament, then the sacrament of matrimony. The majority enter the matrimony with a corrupted heat by being impure.
Ah....!!! what to do with these poor people who receive the sacrament in this way?
especially if these people never discover their impure state in the sacrament of reconciliation. With what horror, heaven can look these kind of marriages!!
Then eventually what this couples become or get? terrible curses not only for them, but for their children that are going to born from them. They started there couples life with the sacrilege of the sacrament of matrimony and started hell on earth to continue experiencing hell for eternity....and everything started with the profanation of this sacrament.
Even thought is so difficult to find salvation in the state of matrimony, in which the majority will go to hell, the only ones that GOD has given the vocation of matrimony can save their souls if they enter the matrimony with the necessary dispositions. Each person must go with the vocation in which GOD has called them, and it is right to say that the majority that go to hell is because they did not follow their vocation.
Each person needs to go to the vocation in which GOD called them at a point in which we must be completely sure that we are in the vocation in which GOD called us.
The majority of Christians that are condemned, are condemned because they did not follow their vocation, either because they never asked God to let them know what their vocation was or because of their bad life, they were not in grace for GOD to tell them about their vocation.
The couples who committed a sacrilege entering the sacrament of matrimony without discernment, will find out after they died in their first judgment that the catholic marriage was a life of fornication, it was a sacrilege.

I found nothing problematic in this talk from a spiritual perspective. Please enlighten us. Also the laws of the United States are not necessarily inline with the teaching of the Church. We have a DUTY to be obedient to the Church's teachings and its moral precepts that order us to perfection over following the laws of society if they are at odds with Church teaching.
Why would you abide by a law that makes society less moral? That's not our duty. Employers shouldn't discriminate between single men and women because they both need to provide for themselves but they SHOULD discriminate against married women with children who are seeking the job without serious reasons. We have to make society moral because ultimately it leads to a better life and circumstances where more souls can be saved.

I love Fr. Chad but telling a business owner to not hire women if a man applies for the same job is sex discrimination in the hiring practice. In the United States in 2018 it's highly illegal and I thank God for that. Fr. Chad should know better than to advise a man to engage in illegal hiring practices like sex discrimination or discriminate against women in general. It's also wrong. How can an employer judge the need for that woman to have a job more than a man? As a woman who didn't get married until I was older I was in the workplace. There's nothing wrong with that. I shouldn't stay home and live at my parents because it was so hard to find a husband. I shouldn't be discriminated against in the work place just because I'm a woman. This is why even as a Catholic, I'm leery of traditional Catholic thinking. They have all these weird ideas about women. Like him asking why would women want to vote when they raise their children. You can actually do both. Voting takes 10 minutes. I stayed at home with my kids and voted. He says a lot of wonderful things and has a tremendous mind but some of his ideas about women are a little over the top. It was disappointing to hear him tell a business owner to try and judge if it's moral for the woman to be working and if you can't to just hire the man and insinuate women shouldn't vote. Wow that's sad.
