What an amazing performance from Stan, I have always loved his approach to big servers: chip the ball deep and then take control of the point. Hands down my favourite player.
harahap muslim H2H doesn’t mean who’s the better player. Just look at the fed and Nadal H2H. Fed is clearly the better player but just because Nadal played against fed on so many clay matches doesn’t mean he’s better.
Wawrinka s one-handed backhand is a beauty, one of the best in business! I hope to see another match like this where his level and his motivation are at their high
In 2004 or 2005 I watched young Wawrinka practising and then playing a match in Toronto.. At that time his backhand was not as sharp and good as a few years later. He played very safe game attacking mostly with forehand.. Completely different player a few years later... just pleasure to watch him.
Great match highlights---thank you for posting! Glad I found. I have an opinion to add on 8:35 "Stan looks very confident here" -- like he can win the match. Love seeing his confidence, swagger, and big hitting on the cusp and couple years before breaking through and winning majors. Hindsight and history show that Stan really started to gain his confidence and bloom into a great champion later into his career while Roddick, even though he was the favorite for this match did quite the opposite. Right around this point is where Stan started getting really comfortable on the relatively fast AO courts--He played super fast and confident tennis in the last half decade. He made his first AO quarterfinals in 2011 but then would become a mainstay in going deep into AO and majors !
@@DrFearfall nooo djokovic leads 5 to 4, last meeting djokovic won in wimbledon in straight sets 2023 3rd round, wawrinka won 4 matches 2 finals one 4rth round by W/o and a qf
What Roddick gained from his serve, he lost in his backhand. Wawrinka is such a well-rounded player who can hit winners from both wings. Really tough to play against a guy who has a potent backhand, especially when you don't. Nice match though.
It's the American way of teaching tennis that has kept them from being better. The arrogance and dismissive attitude towards clay that has kept them from having better footwork, speed, variety and results on ALL surfaces. Roddick, Isner, Querrey, Fritz, Opelka are ALL lacking
Andy didn't only struggled to land backhand winners but his forehand technique also didn't helped him to land forehand winners also. Anyway he has done a very great all those years considering his technique (both fh and BH), winning a slam, being ranked number 1......well done Andy.
I wanted to see more of Roddick, I loved watching him play. Sucks that his career went the way it did. I hoped he'd have won a few Grand Slams It was maddening to see how many points Roddick seemed to give away
If I recall correctly, Federer before the match stated something along the lines of Wawrinka’s anticipation will be too much for Roddick to handle. But otherwise, I always felt Roddick went backwards in terms of advancing his game. Earlier he played more to his strengths, but in an effort to dethrone Federer, went backwards, by trying to play a more behind the baseline style. He did not have the legs for that kind of game. Sure he became more solid in terms of stroke production, but honestly, taking away the forehand that made him dangerous for many was just backwards. He could have tried to improve the accuracy without sacrificing too much power. Or at least added while still having that weapon. Overall, he lost most of his strengths, and in the end didn’t really have the tools to protect his best shot, the serve, against the best players. Wawrinka on the other hand, improved his consistency without really losing what made him dangerous. He used to be what they described as clumsy, but bloomed well. He advanced and developed his forehand which was a bit of a liability earlier on. He moved forward. Nothing more really to say.
ShockWave This change started when he started to work with a Larry Stefanki. He started looping the FH, slicing a lot of BH, and trying to counter punch. Roddick actually had a solid BH when he worked with Conners. Watch what happened to Fernando Gonzalez with Stefanki. Same thing. Lots of slicing and looping. Someone said that Roddick gave up the game he needed to win another major, in order to consistently reach all the semifinals.
It was more likely his arm was giving out like Courier; past 05 he couldn't crank up to 140 at will anymore, and past 07 he was really dropping mphs on the serve. I think he adapted his game more due to his arm dying out more then anything to be honest.
namtran512 interesting. Where are you getting the info on his arm dying? Because I never heard about that. In terms of the serve, wouldn’t the shoulder range of motion have more effect on it? When he was much younger he had more range of motion in his joints, but his joints’ range of motion never looked great throughout his latter 5 years at least. Federer then and now looks like he still has good range of motion. That’s my speculation on Roddick, if what you said was true. Players these days seem to taking care of their range of motion better.
@@JiraiyaSama86 I used to watch Roddick religiously as I was a big fan of his old power game. His power game deterioration coincided with an average drop of speed on his serve. That was not a coincidence at all. Even when he made a resurgence in 2009 to get to a Wimbledon final, he was still using more body serves and only cracking a 140 mph once in a blue moon, when he used to just do it at will from 2002-2004. I think honestly he red lined too hard early on and it really killed his arm and he got dead arm, like Courier. It used to drive me nuts that he wouldn't play his old power game, but I think honestly it was because he was carrying an injury he didn't want anyone to know about. If you remember, in that 2003-2004 run of his power game, he literally cracked 140+ mph serves every single first serve. If you watch him 2005+ and on after the Australian Open, his mph started to drop.
Roddick was a grinder, not a great ball striker and it showed against the great players. But his career was still formidable. He retired with 32 career titles and a 74% winning percentage (612-213). Stan has won 16 titles to this day
Sean Jenkins yes but in fairness Stan played in tougher environment. Big 3 plus Murray, Del Po and Cilic. I think Roddick had it a bit easier. Still after it’s all said and done the records is the best indicator
To me, now 13 years and change removed, I watch this again and realize Roddick didn’t play as poorly as I remembered and this match was actually quite close despite the notable deficiencies in Roddick as opposed to Stan where even before he reached his peak he was overpowering Roddick massively
I haven't watched tennis in the times when Roddick was in top form. I started watching tennis around 2009 and I always felt that his overall play is weak, and he is just a serve machine. However he was edging to the end of his career in this match. I am happy for Stan though who turned out to be a real champion and matured in his play.
1:01-1:25 This kind of point epitomizes what Roddick's game was reduced to. He could hustle and make a lot of balls abd be consistent, but he really did not have power from the back of the court to actually hurt his opponent. As a result, he was trying to wait for his opponent to miss, like here, rather than trying to be the aggressor and win the point.
never understood why Americans like Roddick, Isner, Stevie Johnson all have/had subpar 2 handed backhands. wasn't Agassi a good example to follow? they all kind of push the ball with no power instead of snapping through it. guys with great athletic ability, you'd think they could figure it out and hit it correctly.
Tough match to watch as a Roddick fan (and when you’re also a Staninal fan!). Stan just had too many weapons here and Roddick too few. I’d really like to see the stat of total overall winners here; Stan must’ve obliterated Roddick on this stat, especially seeing the ace count of 24 - 9 in favor of Stan. Based on these highlights, looks like the majority of points Roddick was able to take were from net volleys. His forehand and backhand could not deliver winners. Like so many others have echoed, wish Roddick could’ve maintained his style of play from ~‘03/‘04. Not sure if this change happened due to coaching or injury. Regardless, it’s too bad that aggressive style was abandoned.
Some of the worst commentating ever, it took them the beginning of the third set to recognize what was happening in the match and finally give Wawrinka credit for dictating the match.
You do realise this is just highlights and doesn't contain the whole match or commentary? You've missed three quarters of what they were saying because it isn't in this video.
Wawrinka's game matches up to everyone else except for Federer who never gives you any rhythm. Should have more than 3 slams. But still a Fucking player
Roddick just had way too many holes in his game. A dodgy backhand and slightly clunky movement (at times) being two of them. A good player could really take advantage of those weaknesses.
