What an amazing guy, very knowledgeable and confident, I have the same model with a sticking cd tray, stripped it partially down but couldn’t get at the drive belt. Put back together with it still broken!!! Never mind the DAB is fantastic.
Nice repair! It's nice to know that other people are still prepared to fix these consumer-grade appliances. I think that the vast majority of the public these days would just throw that whole HiFi away without even attempting to repair it.
Nice fix on the plastic pegs 👍 I have the "pleasure" of looking into a DMX-50 that's skipping at a Repair Café at the weekend - as always with mini systems like this the disassembly looks like it will be the most time consuming part 😬
The DAC is the Wolfson chip I pointed out on the board in the can with the DAB processor. I didn't check what the large chip near the phono connectors was but would guess it's just audio switching etc.
I think that everything is implemented in DSP hardware which means that everything is processed in the digital domain and converted back to analogue using a duel channel DAC.
If still had it could of sent my Kenwood RXD-M31MD Mini-Disc HIFI (oddly can't find images of it on the net). Got it back in 2000. Loved mini-discs, they always looked really cool. It had a rotating front panel so once music was playing you could make the panel rotate to hide the display. Good for playing at night for sleep music.
@Frank Sandqvist - I have seen worse, compared to the 20 euro cheapies where it looks like the components are simply thrown in like darts this looked quite well made with pre-bent capacitors.
Nice teardown. and nice fix on the CD player. You did say this stereo can record FM correct? is this one of those HD radios? is there a way to record the HD broadcast digitally to the card instead of going from digital to analog and back for storage on the flash card? Awesome channel.
@coondogtheman1234 Hi I had this sterio and yes it can record FM you can even set the timer from what I can renember It also recorded From the digital radio as well.
Mike, Great Video, however, I do have a few questions :) you didn't cover the processing and DAC used before the amplifier (i.e. the S/PDIF Receiver, Signal Processing (Speaker EQ etc) and DAC before the Sanyo STK amplifier). Any chance you can take a photo at least? Cheers Rochey P.S. Great Video once again, and I loved the SMD Vacuum one you did too!
But does it record digitally from the radio tuner direct to the SD card or does it re encode from digital to analog and back to digital to something like mp3?
@coondogtheman1234 Oh right I see I rember that you could put the sd card in the pc and windows media player will play it but I cant rember what the format was.
That amplifer section looks really cheap. Free standing caps, look like something from the eighties. Nice that you got the thing working though! New radio for the 'shop? :)
I think you have to lower the exposure because the video looks blurry. You can watch @mattsmacintosh tutorials for video cameras, they are quite good. Just ignore the Mac video editing ones and go straight to the camera tutorials. By the way, nice LED cube.
Whatever made that notification ping in the background made me go out of fullscreen mode and check my emails ;) Btw. you should try to pan more slowly (or even better mount the camera on a tripod and move the object). It's hard to follow the rapid movements.
I thought this was going to show me how to take it apart not just show me a meaningless load of bits on the bench. I’m pretty sure my cd tray belt has snapped so I will have to work it out for myself. Just wasted 17 minutes.
Wow, a bit bitter? This never claimed to be an instructional video. And if you can't figure it out on your own... well, you've got no business trying to fix it.
@@AureliusR If you listen to his intro he says he is going to take it apart and fix the cd tray. The exact problem I had , so why wouldn’t I believe him? I was a telecoms tech for 30 years but always willing to learn from someone else if it saves a bit of time. I fixed it without his help.
@@johncrosley1 He... quite literally did exactly that, and showed how he did it. I'm not understanding your issue. The tray can break in different ways.
@@AureliusR I watched the video again in case I missed something but can only conclude that you watched a different video. I stand by my original comments. He showed all the parts but not the actual dismantling. Not only that but his explanation of the smoothing capacitors at 2-40 and various other technical talk shows me that he is not very knowledgeable on electronic theory. There are no high frequencies in a power supply unit, just mains hum, which in a full wave rectifier is 100Hz, hardly high frequency. When dismantling complex pieces like this it is easy to make a mistake and break something if you are the trailblazer which is why I was more than happy to follow his method. Unfortunately there wasn’t any method just a load of nonsensical technobabble.
Nice to see someone fixing something after they take it apart, in so many of these videos people just bin it after they have had a look inside.
"They always put too many screws in these things"
my hero.
Post reassembly fastener residuum is one of those omnipresent aspects of electronics repair.

Ah, there's nothing quite as beautiful as the sound of a working piece of audio gear once it's been repaired. :)
Thanks to this vid I have just been able to fix one of these , it had a broken CD tray drive band. Cheers.

Btw this system does a great job in a small room. The bass is just unique for so small speakers.

Your knowledge in this field is amazing.

Brilliant & Intuitive info... I have a dmx 50 the cd does not work at all... Maybe a fix at some point?
@Frank Sandqvist - I have seen worse, compared to the 20 euro cheapies where it looks like the components are simply thrown in like darts this looked quite well made with pre-bent capacitors.
The cd unit looks quite old compared to what PC cd/dvd cases have inside these days, i don't think i've seen an unit with gears in ages.

What's in the metal box above the CD tray?
Awesome !
More teardown videos like this please ! :)

My only question is why does Mike own a Jill Sobule album?!

I mean digitally to the SD card like to an MP3. I have an 80's retro style boombox that can do that.
Whatever made that notification ping in the background made me go out of fullscreen mode and check my emails ;)

how to make own DAB transmitter?
It's DAB, not "HD Radio".
Hehe pretty cool!
wicked accent...makes a little dificult to understand for the non english speaker :(
But anyway all your vids are great!
High End with spring clips? Ewww yucky
Hi Fi ???? NOT
Uh... how do you figure?
It's a Pure, someone will love it as their bedroom or man cave system.
