To me, Germany and Australia have been the kings of metal and progressive music for the last several years. I am beyond thrilled to see that Finland is making a massive surge to take that title.
It is not progressive metal music, it is synergy of melodic death and doom. Each region has its own strong music directions due to cultural and mental features. Finland is known for its awesome melodic death metal stuff with melancholic motives. Also there are some mixes of metal music subgenres, which became classic and can be named like subgenres by itself, and "Melodic Death / Doom metal" synergy is one of them. And Finland has one of its best representatives like Swallow the Sun, Red Moon Architect, Barren Earth, Black Sun Aeon, Ghost Brigade, Kaunis Kuolematon and etc.
