as someone that built houses in his youth. this wasn't the builders fault, it was the architect's fault... they create plans to be used and when a builder tries to make corrections to it, he gets yelled at or threatened to be fired (or contract canceled). so instead, he just builds what's marked on the plans... no matter how stupid it looks....
and the gap at the top is because A. that was what was marked on the plans and B. it's usually standard to have the height of the inside of the cubby to match the height of the cabinets being put in so that they look even... and when people buy smaller (shorter) fridges, it looks weird...

when your brain can't see the outline of the stairs, You WILL trip.. even carpet (or floor markings) that distort the shape of the floor will make people trip over themselves...
another fun fact: stairs have to be measured to be a specific height or people will trip on them. there is a very small range of height that each stair can be from the next stair or landing before it's out of code. the reason is because if a stair is out of that small range of height, even by a couple of millimeters, you WILL trip on them... the way human bodies move (specifically, climbing) dictates how high we life our legs when climbing up. so each stair has to be within that area that we would lift our foot when climbing.. it's a really weird thing...

this is actually a design for a bathroom 'unit' from Japan. it's so that the waste water from the sink (called 'gray' water) is recycled into water to flush the toilet with.. while good in idea, sometimes it's hard to do in practice... newer models have the sink integrated into the top of the toilet directly...

this is actually illegal in every State... all rooms (besides fully interior rooms, like closets, ect) MUST have a window that can be exited during an emergency.... it's the law in EVERY State's building codes for residential buildings... like home and hotels... IF you EVER come across this, leave the building IMMEDITALLY and report it to the fire department as a fire hazard..
