- Matilda Forsberg is a Swedish painter who lives and
works in Newark, New Jersey. She often draws inspiration from old family photographs and her community. Her work often grapples with her family’s shared experience of emigration.
Forsberg occasionally imagines figures and works them into her paintings. Coexistence, a painting depicting her daughter’s father as a child, features several imagined figures and additions that were not in the original photograph. In this particular work, the Christmas tree was one of Forsberg’s additions.
Her husband’s family immigrated to Miami from Hong Kong and didn't celebrate Christmas, so the tree was not originally pictured, but in the United States, they found themselves surrounded by symbols of Western culture, so she wanted to include it.
In the studio, she amplifies the colors, sometimes beyond their original flair. Her creative process is intuitive; she sometimes paints over figures or erases parts of the canvas.
Currently, Forsberg is experimenting with adding
texture and wants to translate this technique into a larger format. Throughout her work, the passage of time is a notable ongoing theme and she’s interested in looking into the past to represent where we are now as a society.
