OMG this thing WORKS!! The price was right so I ordered from Amazon right after watching your video. We have tried the pellets down the holes with little success. My husband was excited to try it. There was a fresh mound in the yard this morning. My husband used the probe to find the tunnel and put the device in place. An hour and a half later it was triggered with a dead gopher in the trap. This thing is worth every penny!! Thank you for the video! I'm sure we will catch more since the neighbors on either side of us don't do anything about the gophers or moles.

The Gopher Hawk work very good! Placement is everything. I keep a small shovel and dig around the hole to get the bigger ones out!

My yard was spongy with tunnels. My feet would actually sink. This trap works. Don't pull on the trap when you can't pull it through. Sink a shovel next to the hole and loosen the dirt enough to get it out. You might bend or break the working end of the thing. Also, don't give up on one hole. Sometimes it took an hour and others a week but eventually they got caught.

I use these strictly for moles. It's the easiest mole trap made in my opinion. However, they still are a challenge at times. You have to find the "live" tunnel and this isn't always easy. And in loose sandy soil I get a lot of misses. I've been trying to get one mole for two weeks and I have 3 years of experience with these. Good video. One criticism is I wish they used a brighter paint to signal a hit.

This is the best mole trap EVER! I have taken several from my yard. No need to dig up the kill. Simply pull the trap gently from the hole and your pest comes up with it. Excellent product!

Those traps work great but to take them out use a shovel to dig him out because sometimes it grabs there arm and it yanks the arm out so using a shovel is the best way to get them out. With en a year I've caught 18 of them

Try tossing some chunks of dry ice down into the tunnel. Seal off the hole and let the CO2 do the work. Depending on the size of the run, you’d probably have to drop it in multiple spots. Big cities have used this method successfully on rats.

Few Tips: 1. On deep runs set the trap in half way in set the trap then set the trap down the rest of the way. Eliminates the trap getting bent by top grass. 2. Most of the time gopher is caught by the head and dead instant. If still moving let it sit before removing. Giving it time to pass and avoid it getting away. If gopher to big to go out the whole a quick shovel should to the trick to lose dirt

Been using the Gopher Hawk for a little over a month now. Only two minor complaints...1. Because of soil conditions, placement is key. First trap was a clean kill, caught by the head. Subsequent traps were foot captures. You should wallow out the hole to a touch deeper than the run so the bulb formed by the springs is in the pathway to let the varmint hit the trigger full on. The foot captures were still good because the trap held firm and let me pull straight out of the hole to blast it in the head with my trusty Remington 552 .22 rifle. So if you see the trap is tripped, lay a hand on it to see if it's moving which will likely indicate a foot capture. Then either take your chances pulling it gingerly straight out the hole or just dig around to loosen or remove some soil to get at it cleanly. 2. I ran into some deeper tunnels when it would have been nice to have the whole trap and tool six inches longer to save the hassle of trying to find something shallower. Even then, if you want you can dig out a wider hole to let you set the trap as deep as you need. I'm just lazy like that. Less than a month and I've greased six and it appears that those were all that were on our four acres. Great trap!

After watching this I bought 2 of these. I’ve been battling moles for years and they’ve done more damage than I knew was possible. - Nothing caught for a week. Then I figured out that I needed to target deeper, more active tunnels. Once I figured out where they were active I killed 2 in the same day. Probably a breeding pair. This trap works! I’ve been telling everyone at work. Guys talk about this stuff. I’ve never killed a mole with any other trap and I’ve tried them all. The only way it could be better is if it had braces to hold it steady in strong wind or in very shallow tunnels. I’ve had trouble locating the deeper tunnels. But I like to keep traps set even if the tunnels are shallow. I’m finally winning the war!

Now you have a smart gopher . . . Now he will just plug the trap and go around. Some observations; Had your gopher been dead he would have been limp enough to come right thru the hole with little problem. Just a little hand spade will easily loosen the dirt enough to remove the pest. The straps the form the cage at the bottom need to be in the bulged formation to allow the pest to easily pass through. The steel straps are easily ruined and fail to bulge out. If you spring them out to where they will bulge too much it will seize your trap and it won't work properly. A block of wood or something to set your camera on will improve your ability to work and hold the camera still enough for the watcher to see. Excellent trap. Great video. Keep on trapping! ps ; You'll experience a "bloom" if you don't keep em under control. FUN!

I had a new lawn -sod - put in last summer and the moles destroyed are lawn in about 3 weeks while we were on vacation. Yes war time it was. What I do to locate a working tunnel is to take my garden hose and spray over the mount which than if the moles past through it would leave cracks at the mound. Area's my hose didn't reach I just used a sprinkling can to moisten the mounds. Once I saw the cracks in the soil than I knew where to place my traps. No sense in placing traps in a tunnel that isn't active at that time. I might try the ones you are using but they appear to be more for gofers than moles. We have tried every trap out there except the one you have. We use the spring-loaded type that when tripped bend the moles in half. Poor things they can go back to our neighbor's yard to play. They even go under fencing 3 feet under-ground to get to our flowers and garden. Thanks

Find the runway. Punch a 1” hole and dump in 1 cup Chlorine Cleanser using a funnel. Next pour 1/2 cup of household ammonia. Be careful and immediately seal the hole. Produces chlorine gas that lays in the tunnels for several hours. Solved my problem with moles.

The best way and the most fun way to get rid of gophers is a propane cannon. It’s a special tool that has an igniter at the tip, stick the tip in the ground crank the propane up wait a few minutes hit the igniter for the Fourth of July. I think there are some TH-cam videos look it up it’s a lot of fun, if I had gophers I’d be doing this every day.

JD, have you considered methods for repelling the moles and gophers from your property rather than killing them? I previously posted suggestions for dealing with moles (sweeten the soil w/ application of lime 2x a year, as moles eat grubs and earthworms, which prefer acid soil), and just did a little research on gophers, which are herbivores. There are many passive ways to discourage gophers, including planting plants they are know to be repelled by, like marigolds, mints, and any member of the lily family, among others. One of the other suggestions I read was sub-surface galvanized mesh fencing, which may be expensive and laborious to install, but which would prevent both moles and gophers, once gone, from re-infesting your property. Unless you do something to prevent their coming into your property, you will never eradicate them, just be constantly killing them, on going war which neither of you will ever win. You are not declaring war on the gophers because they are endangering a crop or causing structural damage to your property, but because the mounds are an eyesore in areas you want to see unblemished, and I can understand that, completely. Planting plants that repel gophers around the boundaries of your property will serve two purposes: repel the underground rodents and beautify the property. While a pest, gophers and other underground critters have their place in the overall ecology of your area, just seems sensible to me to repel them rather than kill them. And whatever you do, please don't resort to poison, as gophers are a big part of the food chain and if natural predators catch and eat a poisoned animal, the predator usually dies, too, including domestic cats and dogs...

    • @BTBRVReviews
      @BTBRVReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Lora, my wife asked me this exact same question. I have tried several other solutions. The challenge is that with several acres of property, even if you drive them out of the specific area they are in, they go to another area of the yard and make fresh (and in many cases larger) mounts. I even tried noise and other types of gopher repellant gear first. They respond by either moving to another part of the yard or digging deeper. Trapping them and moving them does not work either because they come back or destroy someone else's yard. When I catch them, I just toss them in the yard now and let the hawks get them. So I'm keeping the food chain healthy.

You might be outside for a long time if they have established mounts, since they may not dig new ones.

Think terrier dogs are good for this, why they like to dig instinctively. Maybe can borrow some? Good idea luck.

JD ... That thing is way more trouble than it should be. Just stick a water hose in one of the holes and drown them.

    1. Video directions I've seen indicate to put the black part of the GopherHawk device into the opened hole, then pull up on the spring mechanism without pressing down hard on the knob top. Doing this opens the "jaws" underground inside the tunnel. While you seemed to have had success placing it with the "jaws" open, that's not what the videos (or manufacturer's instructions) state.
    2. You correctly tried to assess where the main tunnel is. But, videos indicate to position the jaws as much as possible to enable the gopher to run in-between the 3 "straps." If the straps are such that the gopher can't enter the main part of the trap, likely no catch.
    3. There is a yellow segment on the device that, after catching a gopher, pops up and becomes exposed indicating readily ... from a distance ... that there is a catch.
    4. Videos also address what you experienced, where removal of the gopher was difficult and the gopher somehow got away. The vids show to use a shovel to gradually open the surrounding area and lift the device up, thereby loosening the soil sufficient to pull out the device entirely ... with gopher in the jaws.
    5. Once the device is out of the ground ... with gopher in it, press on the device to open the jaws and release the gopher or knock it out of the trap.
    6. I recently bought two devices but no luck yet. I likely made the mistake of pressing too firmly on top with the jaws open, thereby discombobulating the jaws so the gopher couldn't enter. I'll follow other video instructions to fix the straps; also have ordered several replacement jaws/straps -- vids show how to do this.
