- Sean Penn, two-time Academy Award winner, the first for MYSTIC RIVER (2003) and the second for his portrayal of UAlbany alum Harvey Milk in MILK (2008), visited the New York State Writers Institute in Albany to discuss his debut novel, Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff, the tale of an “odd job man” who kills off the weak and the sick as part of a secret contract with the government. He took questions from the audience.

Everyone that went to school in the 80's knows of a Jeff Spicoli in their lives
And the majority of us knew more than one. Heck I was a Jeff Spicoli for short time. lol
If you grew up in Southern California in 1970s beach culture, you knew Jeff Spicoli. If I was in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, I would have been one of those guys tumbling out of the VW bus in a haze of weed smoke with him.

I grew up in Northern California, graduated from high school there in 1986 and I can attest to this. I knew several actually.
@@JohnHoulgate I grew up in Canada and went to high school in the 80's and knew a few too. One guy had a Jeep. One day I see him hitching a ride to school. When I asked where the (almost new) Jeep Cherokee was, apparently he was high and went "tree jumping in a forest" and the "Jeep didn't make it" (Insert Spicoli language and dude-laugh here). Same guy was in the local paper for taking a corner at excessive speed and didn't see the car carrier until it was too late. Half a car later, he was in the news. Dude had an epic party that he advertised via flyers. Imagine how many people were there. The list goes on...
There is absolutely nothing more nostalgic than watching that classic movie. I miss the early 80s

I went to High School in Anaheim Calif. from 1980 to 1984, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High was very accurate for high school in southern California at that time!

I walked by him (Penn) once in west LA as he stood / leaned by his classic 80’s Buick (might have been an Olds) muscle car and said, “nice car dude”. He glared at me as if he wanted to punch me. What a dick I said to myself. Said the same thing to Kevin Costner at Warner brothers in Burbank about his green mustang from the bull durham film and he at least smiled at me. Penn was obviously being nice in this interview to promote a film.

A "Antique" car is generally a car or anything 100 years old or older. 1980s car is just a old car. If it's a GN or GNX something like that then ya newer term "Muscle car" can be applyed.

True story... I met Sean Penn at 1660 N La Salle in Chicago in 1998. He was meeting someone at the building. We talked in the lobby for ten minutes while I waited for my date. Almost 10 years later he walked into my office in NYC and we picked up exactly where we left off. He was a client at my firm for 5Y.

Great story...I graduated high school a few years before the "Fast Times" class would have...But it was a very similar party hard and fast, rock and roll atmosphere. And I've seen that: guys who were total wastoids went on to become Chamber of Commerce icons and school superintendents...
Our teen age years does not define the rest of our adult life, people through out the years and experiences change. It was funny how the school system back then labeled students as failures by their wacky attitudes and low academic performance, I did heard the phrase "you will fail in life with that attitude" many times on guys and girls whom today have a good living, the 70's and 80's were transitional decades from the old school conservative system to the more chill, cool and tolerant ambience that hit the 90's to our days.

Plot twist: There was no one from his neighborhood who he based the character on, it was just him all along.
I'm shocked he said the movie was "Fluffy". I grew up in the '70's and went to the N.Y.C. public schools and if you take out the surfing I knew every real life person that was portrayed in that movie. Who didn't have a teacher like Mr. Hand? There were no big stars in "Fast Times " but I walked out of the theatre thinking they plucked a real surfer off the street to play Spicoli because Sean Penn only had a small role in "Taps" as did Tom Cruise and unrecognizable . Spicoli is an Iconic character and Penn nailed the part. I’ve heard he gets pissed whenever people mention Spicoli and has gotten mean in years past with fans.. not sure why - it’s what made him and he’s never topped it in his acting career imo
They way he portrayed the character was dead on. I lived in Clairemont in the '70s and this how a lot of the "surfer dudes" talked and acted. I was a surfer, but didn't act, or talk like that, however.

I was teaching a class to some transitioning Army pilots just last week and one of the studs was late to show. I immediately found the Mr Hand “why do you shamelessly waste my time” video on TH-cam and played it when our late student finally showed. Good times!

He thought he was better than that stoner character he once played. He's only recently started to somewhat soften up his stance on it. The famous consultant Tom Peters said that the "A" student, works for the "B" student and the "C" student owns the company. I've talked to many job recruiters, and they said that they favor a 3.5 GPA student more than a 4.0 GPA student because in many cases they have other skills, including social skills that helps professionally. Just see how many Harvard and Yale students work for people that graduated in other countries or came from less famous universities. There was a "Spicoli" in my High School class. He went to college just for one year but today he owns 3 car dealers and make around 2 million dollars a year. His car dealer is famous for the honesty. He never sells a car with a problem. You see lots of honest Spicolis and very dishonest Harvard guys.

It's crazy how we judge drug abusers. Sean's High School friend reminds me of my older brother. When he was growing up he drank like a fish, and did every drug except heroin from the late 70s to the late 80s. Fast forward 30 years later. He's married with a son and a grandson. Has had the same job for almost 20 years. He drinks a few beers on the weekend and hasn't done a drug stronger than ibuprofen.
Josh Are you insinuating that pot is a dangerous drug please let's not go there. Your friend probably smokes weed once in a while but don't tell you. Many people and some i know including my own father (who just turned 74) that are, or retired with a high skilled job. My dad smoked weed for 50+ years and is a retired skill trade worker from GM. So let's not go there...dude ha ha ha haaaa.

Hmmm...well, yes and no. I knew a lot, and I mean A LOT, of Spicoli-types in high school. Sure, most turned out OK. But I know at least four "loadies" from my HS class who died younger than 40: one from a heroin OD, one from general and excessive drug abuse, one from driving drunk (a girl stoner) and one jumped a window. So yeah...most HS stoners just go through a stage. But some don't...they get hooked and don't come out alive.
@@m42037 ~ If you think pot isn't a dangerous drug you're sadly mistaken. I know first hand of the destruction its caused in people I know. Careers, marriages, etc. There are studies that show things like how you're 40% more likely to develop schizophrenia(if predisposed to it) than those that don't partake. It IS addictive. It is no different a drug than any other. Just because some people can get away with a lifetime of use doesn't mean it is safe. Many people can drink alcohol in moderation and never have problems. That does not mean alcohol is not dangerous. And don't even give me the 'its a plant' argument. So is poison ivy. I don't think you'd recommend anyone smoking that.

Only thing that's not recommended is while you're a teen going to school is go out smoking weed everyday with your friends because weed can make you brain lazy and most you'll wan a do is be lazy and may fuck around and not study well and stuggle in school. There's plenty of time during college partys and after graduation on weekends for fun smoking some weed and having some beers. Common sense. I'm sure most teens have smoked a little pot during school and did fine, moderation but i as a parent of a 18 year old after school is joining the Marines agrees with me but doesn't do anything, but says he probably will smoke a little when he's older. Just because people that do heroin (and all of them die i've known a few ) or become alcoholics that smoked weed at a young age as i said, this is a decision that the person makes on their own, weed doesn't cause people to do anything dangerous it's YOU that causes YOU do stupid things. There no such thing as pot is a gateway drug to anything.... Except the refrigerator for munchies and maybe a nap!

I've never really noticed Sean Penn before, but I watched the music video for Jackson Browne's Somebody's Baby, and it is clips of Fast Times at Ridgemont High. So I decided to watch a few clips from the movie, and here I am. He seems like a really decent, down to earth guy. Will have to look more into his films.
In a lot of comments, people are saying that he can be a real jerk, but I like a lot of the movies he's in. U-turn with Jennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte, Billy Bob Thornton and a bunch of other famous actors, that's a pretty wild ride.
Maybe you should look up "Moving in Stereo" by The Cars. It was in Fast Times.
