Listening from Troon, Scotland. A short way down the road from ayr. How to think like a Roman emperor really has started to change how I think. You’ve got a fan in me Donald

Such an elegant and practical communication style Donald. Would love a book by you on Epictetus similar in style as "How To Think Like A Roman Emperor". Amazing book!

My group clinician has been teaching us about stoicism. I thoroughly enjoy it and I believe the people who look at it like it’s a selfish philosophy are missing the message. My clinician gave me your name as someone to look into and so here I am.

Hi Donald, I recently listened to your audiobook. It was so wonderful ... chapter 8 just blew me away. So thank you. Marcus is my favourite stoic.
    Much gratitude from Scotland.

Couldn’t agree more! Chapter 8 brought me to tears and I’m not a super emotional person. It did such a great job explaining the amount of wisdom Marcus carried throughout his life. It amazes me people can be this selfless and wise, even more so to think this man was an emperor that literally could have or do whatever he wanted. It’s like being the richest man in the world and exercising moderation and selflessness with everything you do. Much easier said then done. Now only if we could find world leaders to act in this manner instead of people like trump.
Cheers from Washington state. His accent and tone makes the audiobook that much better.

Cognitive distancing can be really helpful, but be alert to the possibility of dissociation and repression. I know most people watching this will be reflective on their internal psyche, but when I was struggling with depression and bad habits I didn't know. I was dissasociating with my emotions, which can lead to psychosis and some other bad places.
Thanks for the awesome wisdom and knowledge Donald. You navigate some really intricate topics so elegantly.

    Hello Donald
Listening in Pittsburgh. Exposed to the Stoics only one month ago and have completely gotten on board. My first time listening to you. Thank you for another great source of Stoic analysis. Look forward to taking advantage of your other sources of education. Amor Fati

Thanks for the tips on cognitive distancing and verbal diffusion. Reminds me of a quote from Spinoza that Erich Fromm used to call attention to: “What Paul says about Peter tells us more about Paul than it does about Peter.” This quote has helped me differentiate between external events and the value judgements I impose on them, and that my own value judgements usually tell me more about my own thinking than the event itself.

Many thanks for these videos you have put up free for the world. And thank you for your wonderful book "How to Think Like a Roman Emperor". I'm about 1/3 through and am very grateful for the new insights it has given into Stoicism. And more specifically, it has made Marcus Aurelius a real person to me, turning him into a useful role model. I don't think I am judging prematurely that it's earned a place on my reference shelf next to Meditations, Discourses, and Letters to Lucilius.

Greetings from Vancouver - Donald, your Work has been an invaluable resource. I got into Stoicism after studying Albert Ellis, Aaron Beck and David Burns. Your linking of concepts between the CBT founders and Stoics is very useful.
    Keep up the great work!

It's always an honour and a pleasure to listen to Donald Robertson presenting the ideas of Marcus Aurelius, as well as his own blend of Epictetus, Seneca, Musonius, and Shaftesbury. 20/10 as usual.
For further viewing, on the subject (particularly if you find the bite-size format helpful as part of your daily routine) I can recommend Andrew's channel : th-cam.com/channels/8JNIm02zw8h_3NBrP_zsZA.html
