Now that this problem has been identified as a manufacturing issue do we know that machines currently being sold by Precision Mathews have had this issue resolved? I sent an email to PM asking this question but after 24 hours have not gotten a response.

When I returned the spindles that exhibited the issue, I asked them to follow-up and let me know what they found and/or what the root cause was, but I never received any additional information. If they ever provide that information, I'll add it to a pinned comment. Personally, I wish that Precision Matthews would do a full QA on their Taiwanese machines before they leave their PA warehouse, BUT I will also say that I have had several issues over the years, and they have ALWAYS fully resolved those issues. They are very fair and dedicated to providing the best machines they can at the best price possible. These are complex machines with lots that can go wrong. The most important thing is to buy from a company that has proven that they will resolve issues when they do come up.

@@FunctionalPrintFriday Turned out I forgot one of the "t"'s in the email address so I tried again and they got right back to me. They had a bad batch of spindles and sent replacements to everyone who had an issue. The problem appears to have gone away. Sounds like they are a very proactive company with excellent customer service.

The moral of the story is that you buy the seller, not the machine. I've heard great things about Matt's willingness to fix problems.

Yes it's not 3D printing. But, it is related kinda to CNC which is becoming more connected to the 3D printing hobby.

Yes many people are only buying the PM machines just to convert them to a high precision CNC which I plan to do for the PM-25

@@FunctionalPrintFridayjust saw this video and it’s great information, thank you for sharing. I have the same machine and I’m pretty sure I have the same exact problem. Now that you’ve solved the spindle collet taper situation, could you kindly let me know what is the run out now with real world usage? I’ve spent the majority of my time trying to tram this machine for the last 3 years. Also is there a Nod on your machine? If so how did you solve that. Greatly appreciate it if you could shed some light in my direction.

Excellent explanation on it. I read someone else had the same issue on a forum on the same model. How much did the spindle test bar cost and where did you buy it? I guess I might need one.

What's the runout on the spindle above the wrench flats?

could it be down to unmatched bearings or bearing fitment, the high precision bearings in my old mill have alignment marks
