r24R is just more consistent to get kills with, you can make the r24T work but it needs to be set up

R-24R is obviously the better choice for experienced players.
But especially with the poor radar of the MiG-23, it might be a good decision to start off with the R-24T as a beginner and slowly get used to the radar locking mechanics first.

If you're planning to grind on sim, its best to bring a combo of both R-24T and 24R. The 24T with IRST lock is perfect for stealthy attacks as the enemy isn't even aware you're locked on. Also since SIM has very limited view thanks to lack of 3rd person camera, IR missile attacks are more viable
And the R-24R in case the enemy becomes aware and starts popping flares, so launch an R-24R to finish him off
Best launched ≥10km range so the missile wont run out of energy
Remember, only use R-24T when attacking from below or behind, else if you fire one frontally, the enemy can still see your missile trail and flare it out. So best use R-24R for frontal attacks even in sim.

The premium version can't use both T AND R unless I'm mistaken and they changed it

Quite a few RWR systems at the ML's BR can't detect your radar lock and launch. So it's more stealth than one might think.

If your radar wont lock you can switch to irst and back to radar. this helps a lot with the subpar radar

tip for the R-24R if your radar gets fooled by chaff, do not unlock, the missile with use IOG to find the target

it's more so that the missile is still seeing the PD shift of the plane instead of guiding with IOG

Copied from a comment I left in response to someone’s comment:
personally I wouldn’t recommend using the radar missiles as they are very poor (along with the Mig 23’s radar itself being bad) and you have to have to sacrifice your good IR missiles to use them which isn’t worth it. Granted on foggy maps you can struggle using all IR but otherwise you’re fine. An effective tactic is to either fly fast at altitude (can reach 1000kts) using IRST as to not alert enemies, this way you can get close way before they expect you and fire off your IR missiles from above with no warning, this often nets me 2-3 kills at the start of a game (make sure to dive to an altitude where you don’t have a contrail as you get close while controlling thrust to avoid ripping your wings off and keep wing sweep at 100%).If you aren’t a confident pilot yet you can delay your entry (stay far behind teammates, radar off) and let furballs form and then halfway through the game when you arrive just start blasting off IR missiles when enemies are distracted - do note that you’ll have to be aware of when enemies might accidentally flare you missiles while trying to defend someone else’s. So if there is a teammate behind them or if they are coming into a headon engagement with a plane that will typically carry all aspect IR such as Mig 23 or a mirage then you might want to wait until they are clear of this before firing as your missile could be defeated. If the enemy is aware of your position I recommend deceiving them with your radar. Radar lock them and when you get to within 2-3Km fire an IR missile at them. Good luck!

I've found the R-24R's to be surprisingly good in BVR if you have allot of speed on you due to its good Ballistic Coefficient (2561.6 kg/m^2. It glides better than the R-27R or Aim-7F/M). If I'm moving at around Mach 1.4 at 8,000m, I can even squeeze ~20km out of the R-24R. Though yes, sub-10 is preferred. The range performance is partly due to folks just not expecting an R-24 to be dangerous at ranges you'd usually use an Aim-7F/M.

yeah except unfortunately you wont get at 8km because of the f14

@@anton_melnikov Normally, yes. Though there are plenty of cases where, depending on altitude, they aren't exactly looking at you. They're looking at everyone on the deck to ripple-fire all their Aim-54's at, and completely miss the hypersonic cruise missile screaming towards them just under cons. Very funny when it happens. And even if I see a Phoenix is coming for me early, I usually have the speed to run away from it, or I can notch it.
They're annoying, but not a total denial.

@@anton_melnikov A way you can sometimes get around the Phoenix swarm is to stare at the trails as they loft. Often, F-14 spammers will not guide all their missiles on these long-shots. They simply leave the missiles on inertial guidance. Move at a very slight off-set to the expected direction of the hoard and watch for launches. After you spot a launch, wait a tad for more to come off. Then, reverse your direction of travel, still moving towards them. If the missile starts curving towards you, defend. If not, just keep pressing. It will take some time to get the timing down, but this strat works wonders more often than it really should.

No IRCCM on the T, poor all aspect range. So if you can't figure out how to make use of the R and Radar that's a massive skill issue.

You have MTI which is difficult to notch and chaff. So again, massive skill issue.

@@ZigaZaguexactly. R-24R is arguably the best missile br to br. Small notching window + ability to launch from rear aspect + good acceleration.
Inability to use it indicates a major skill issue.

the T is very flare resistant though, experienced multiple times that my R-24T just ignored my bandit's flares
