Grand Teton North Ledges - 3rd Descent*

  • Went looking for a solo adventure and found one!
    7.5 hrs breaking trail up the Ford-Stettner route with 2 ropes and gear proved quite effortful.
    On the down, I got to mix route finding, anchor building, and "exposure therapy" while making 5 rap anchors and finding 2 pre-made rap anchors for a total of 7 rappels with 2x 60m Radlines (It was a lot of rappelling!). Some of the wildest and steepest rappels I've ever done for sure!
    *I didn't actually ski the ledges due to the snow being a bit heavier/wetter than I expected. The upper ledge was in the sun so I was conservative and down climbed it and then decided to just continue rappelling rather than ski and boot back up the lower ledge. Even the Grandstand skied terribly (breakable crust) and I downclimbed a section. Lots of room for improvement on style!
    All in all probably one of the most full on days I've had in the mountains, was a really cool experience and I'm psyched to have closed my ski season on this one!

    Climbed and guided the Tetons for many years. Love the sight of that Teton Rock!
    I'm sitting on my porch in Alta looking at the Grand right now.

    Wow! Thanks for sharing this amazing descent in less than desirable snow conditions.I am a grey haired long-time skier but a newbie to climbing and AST. It looks like most of the anchors were left in place? Your execution of the rappels was impressive. Love that adventure and confidence.

      Correct, I left 5 anchors and found 2 from previous parties (2 other parties have descended it to my knowledge). The rappels were a really fun puzzle to solve and definitely felt wild and adventurous! Glad you enjoyed it, it is a coveted day of mine for sure!

    How do you get your nuts back from your rappel stations???

    • @MattRandall9
      @MattRandall9  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question, with rapping you unfortunately have to leave anchors since there's no way to get back up them and if you did, then you'd still need to rappel down. So they are still up there

    Was this what you expected for the day?

    • @MattRandall9
      @MattRandall9  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Basically, yes. I knew it would be very much an adventure and went in with minimal beta intentionally to have to problem solve and route find on my own. The thing that mostly was unexpected was the sun being on the first ledge's snow, making it quite hot/wet. Besides that, I went into the day knowing there was a lot of unknowns I'd have to deal with, which made it a very rewarding day.

    What’s nuts is trusting that natty tat on an overhanging repell.

    • @darrenjakal
      @darrenjakal 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s rappels, thanks spellcheck

    • @MattRandall9
      @MattRandall9  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I inspected and bounce tested it before getting off of my previous rappel, so I was confident that it would hold more than bodyweight but it was definitely older looking tat. It was a 3 piece and one leg had damage but it felt structurally sound from testing it. Definitely could have replaced the tat but I was running low on tat so felt good with trusting it after some tests

      But definitely good feedback and one thing I wish I had brought more of was tat. I brought about 40’ and used all of it by the end. Would have been good to have had another 20’ but if I really needed extra I had my double length sling and of course, my ropes

      Not even embarrassed to say zero turn were made on the ledges haha But it would be really good skiing actually, just wasn't the day for it, for me. Younger me would have taken the chance to make a few turns in hot/wet snow over a 2,000' drop...
