The timing of the giving of the Torah (Matan Torah) is traditionally understood to have occurred during the month of Sivan, which corresponds to late May or early June in the Gregorian calendar. This places the event during the zodiac sign of Gemini (Twins), not Cancer. Let me address the details, clarify the astrological connections, and explain the concept of Jews being “above the mazal” (mazal meaning “constellation” or “luck”).
      1. The Torah was given on the holiday of Shavuot, which is celebrated on the 6th of Sivan according to the Jewish calendar.
The month of Sivan corresponds astrologically to Gemini (May 21-June 21).

Gemini, represented by the Twins, is often interpreted in Jewish mysticism as symbolizing the Two Tablets of the Torah. The tablets were given to Moses on Mount Sinai and serve as the foundation of Jewish law and ethics.
The twins also symbolize duality and unity-two forces brought together in harmony, much like the Torah’s ability to unify the spiritual and physical worlds.
      2. The summer solstice marks the transition from Gemini to Cancer. This usually occurs around June 21st. By this time, the sun has moved into Cancer, which represents a new zodiac phase.
Shavuot, however, is firmly in Gemini, as it occurs earlier in Sivan, around late May or early June, before the solstice.
Therefore, it is accurate to state that the Torah was given during Gemini, not Cancer.
      3. The statement that the Jewish people are “above the mazal” (ein mazal l’Yisrael) comes from the Talmud (Shabbat 156a). It means that Jews are not subject to the deterministic forces of astrology. Instead, they are governed by divine providence (hashgacha pratit).

Receiving the Torah, which represents divine law, elevated the Jewish people beyond the constraints of nature and fate. Their destiny is shaped by their relationship with God, not by celestial alignments.
      4. While the Jewish tradition emphasizes that the Torah and Jewish people are “above the mazal,” there is still symbolic respect for the astrological alignment of Gemini with the Torah’s giving:
Gemini’s symbolism of duality aligns with the two aspects of the Torah: the written Torah (Torah Shebichtav) and the oral Torah (Torah Shebe’al Peh).
It also reflects the dual nature of humanity and God’s covenant with the Jewish people, where the divine and human interact.
Gemini is ruled by Mercury (symbolizing communication), which reflects the concept of the Torah as the ultimate medium of divine communication to humanity.
The giving of the Torah represents God “speaking” to humanity in a direct and eternal way, making Gemini a fitting sign for this event.
      5. While the summer solstice occurs during Cancer, its symbolism is about light reaching its peak, reflecting spiritual enlightenment and abundance. However, the giving of the Torah is tied to Gemini’s qualities, emphasizing balance, duality, and divine connection.
