I was 13/14, listening to Radio Luxemburg in my bed when they announced that Sid had died - I cried !
Pretty much exactly how most of us saw him and imagined he might be in real life.
He sort of worked in the same sort of tradition (without the singing) as Jimmy Durante, better known as Schnozzle, in that they both adored and loved their working life, and loved it by just being themselves. As Jimmy Durante sang ''Right from the start, it's got to come from the heart''.

Carry On Screaming showed that Carry On could be a success without Sid James. The team was full of seasoned actors, some of whom lived quite sad & tragic lives.

BTW- I dunno what it is but I do NOT like Sid's agent - I get the impression that the Sid he talks about is the Sid in the way he'd have liked him to be and NOT the Sid the way he was !. I bet his agent made more money out of Sid than Sid did !

Years later Les Dawson played the Sunderland Empire and after just one evening in the star dressing room(the sane Sid had used) he quit the show and never played there again and never discussed why... Some claim he saw Sid in the mirror..

Interesting comment about Sid and Barbara Windsor and how Sid should pack it in because the Press would find out.
