Hay River's been through so much the last few years. Fort Smith is my hometown and we came over to the Track and Field meet every year for 15 years. Have so much affection for the town and its people
Oooh am so happy to find this video! Lived in Hay River in the early to mid 90's, a lot has changed but some not, like the purple high school. My husband proposed to me at Alexandra Falls in the dead of winter on that lookout, with the partially frozen falls running. Thanks for the memories!
Thank you so much for such an enthusiastic introduction to your town! I've been really missing Canada lately, and found your video as I was surfing TH-cam for Canadian places, and I'm so glad I did!
You know, it's fine. Many smaller countries and more rural communities make due with the resources that nature provides. In Eastern Europe, many people still have family (mostly pensioners) that have a small villa with a plot of land that they cultivate every year for potatoes, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes and beans. It's a must, but the soil there is pretty rich. Just the rain is getting more seasonal, still stronger in the Fall/Winter, but pretty dry in mid to late Summer. Nothing wrong with having an agricultural way of life at all. Many people are wanting that but can't afford the land.
I used to stop off in Hay River a lot in the 90s and 20s heading from Edmonton to Fort Simpson. A good stop off point. Nice community, and I miss the North! There used to be a great restaurant on the main street run by a Chinese family. Not sure what it was called but it was great.
That's amazing!! The North is a special place. The Chinese restaurant is still there, but it's now called Salt and Pepper and it's run by different people.😊
It was a very interesting introduction to this small town. It is worth a few days to explore the waterfalls and surroundings, including the three cute dogs. Great video too!
Watching this from Vancouver and I am jealous. I heard Hay River and Yellowknife are awesome places to live. I'll be visiting NWT in 7 months. I'm excited. Thank you for showing Hay River in depth. Both of those waterfalls are on my bucket list.
OMG! I'm so glad I found you on youtube. Your presentation of the videos makes me feel like I'm there with you. I've always been interested in visiting the Yukon and Northwest territories for the mountains and majesty. A few weeks ago I started surfing for videos on youtube of the area and finally decided to check out your videos yesterday. I'm glad I did. You're motivating me to save up and go out there for a trip. I'm 55 and this is a trip I need. I love my country and I want to see more of her! Thank you for putting out these videos! Keep posting! ❤️
Oh wow, thank you so much! You definitely need to check out the North, it is a very special place for sure. Unforgettable:) Our beautiful Country does have so much to offer! Thanks for such a great comment.😊
Lovely video, watched the whole thing. Thanks for putting the human touch on a region that isn't covered very much. I live in the middle of Europe at 53rd parallel, so you are just 7 deg further North.
Thank you Petrena. Your videos are beautiful ❤❤❤ I have been thinking about moving out of Ontario but you said that up north it's very difficult to find a place to live and life is very expensive
Awe, thank you so much! ❤️❤️ The North can be difficult, but there are definitely opportunities, and alot of the jobs pay a higher salary because of the cost of living. It's an experience! That's for sure.😊
I love everything about the North...except for the bugs! They have always been a deal breaker for me. Too bad. I think I would have loved to live in those latitudes!
Thanks so much for sharing, Petrina! A trip to your home place is always interesting and fun. Then you add the wonderful area. all hosted by a pretty lady with the diamond smile and you have the best there is. Love the falls you showed, and I can see you could spend a lot of time there and always see something beautiful. Stay safe and keep that wonderful smile.... You are awesome!!! Cheers!!!!❤ 👍😎
You are awesome!! I am so glad you enjoyed my video. I love the North, it's a special area. I am excited to share the Northern lights with you soon! This time of year they become super magical. I hope you had an incredible weekend!✨️
Petrina is a real sweetie and a gifted travel host. I'll tell you one thing about Hay River and Yellow Knife however. You can get to both of these places in.the family car, but they easily qualify as adventure travel. You will definitely learn first hand about the vastness of Canada by going there. These two places are literally at the end of the road. It will give you a sense of pride and accomplishment to explore there.
Back in the day (1970's) when the school was first built the students were given the task of selecting the colour. They chose purple and by this video it seems to have been always purple. I'm sure the students chose the colour as a joke, but it was not to be. The staff made it purple. In addition, I lived in Hay River when the high rise was constructed. Rumour has it they ran out of rebar toward the end of construction and the last three floors do not have rebar in the poured cement walls. The bright bulb who authorized a high rise at that time was off the wall. It looked really stupid sticking way up into the sky in a northern setting when most other buildings were one story. The mayor at the time was Don Stewart.
Nice video, that sure is a pretty place in the summer. Does the waterfall freeze solid in winter? that would be interesting to see. I,m in southwestern Canada near Vancouver, take care
The falls do freeze over in the winter, and it's a beauty on a whole other level! Definitely and incredible sight to see. You are also in a beautiful area!😍
The bugs are still there! Haha. Each has a season though. One month bull dogs, one month sand flies, all summer months mosquitos the size of small airplanes.😂
Didn't see them in your video! While I was there we built the synchrolift, the marine elevator used to pull NTs barges out before freezeup. Interesting piece of engineering. I think the most afffecting thing I saw in Hay River was across the water from the sychrolift. There was an Anglican mission church still there then, abandoned but still standing. I can hardly imagine what life would be like for the missionaries, miles and miles from any other Europeans, trying to teach and heal the local people. It was obviously hard to keep warm, for one thing. One of the closets was completely lined with pages from the Illustrated London News.
🙋♂️ Patrena 🌞 ! Hay River looks like a pretty healthy place to live with all the fresh air & fresh 🐟. Love the purple 💜 school. Glad they are refurbishing the apartment building .. it is so hard to find affordability when it comes to housing.
Hi David! It is a special place, and the fish is to me the BEST in the world.😍 Housing is definitely an issue. I am excited to show you the North lights soon! They are spectacular up here.💫
You guys seriously make me want to live there. I'm an American, grew up in rural Arkansas, but even down here, things are getting strange, and with advances in AI and automation, political unrest, and climate change, things are only going to get stranger. I feel like little towns like yours are going to be an oasis through the coming storms.
This is really wonderfulvideo. i learned so manythings from your video. if you come to South India maybe we can explore together. what kind of camera are you using for taking videos?
This looks like a perfect place to live for anyone who loves a simple, pure lifestyle close to nature. One thing interest me is what are the main industries in this town for people to make a living ?
Hi Petrena how are you. Nice to see you. Nice video. Your food so nice dishes yemmi yemmi. Three Dogs so nice they eat Apples it's very fine. In India Dogsnot eat apples. It is one of the few places in the NWT that I've visited, and walked right where you and your mum walked (nice to meet her, btw) at Alexandra Falls and I've been on the beach of the great inland fresh water sea called Great Slave.
