- The Kingdom of Benin was an ancient kingdom in what is now southern Nigeria.
In Benin city, the capital of Edo state, the Royal Bronze Casters Guild, which was founded in the 13th Century, lives on.
Hand-sculpted clay figures are transformed into bronzes using an ancient wax-casting process passed down through the centuries. Ashionye Ogene reports from the UNESCO world heritage site, Igun Street.
You're doing a great job with showcasing the best of Nigeria, and Africa. Would be good to get your content on international television
Thank you Nosa. You can watch my reports on BBC World News. This report aired there originally.
These bronzes are outrageous! This has got to be some of the best bronze work ever and they are still doing it. And Ashionye, how come you're not doing more videos? I'm transported back to the Era of the Gods when I look at you.
We need the world museum in BENIN City Nigeria
🇳🇬🇳🇬
So the Europeans are "LOANING" Benin their own art? That's like saying "Maybe the guy off the street will ALLOW me sleep in my house tonight"🙄 They are really awful
Cacausiod peoples created this kind of before 4000 years black people created this kind of art 17 century
Very sad
God bless Nigeria 🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬
I don't know if it's true, but Wiki states that : On 29 November 2022, it was announced that the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, London had signed its Benin Bronzes back to Nigeria. The formal signing ceremony took place on the evening of 28 November 2022 in front of Nigerian royalty and other dignitaries. On 7 May 2023, the Bronzes were given to the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, through a presidential decree, and effectively became his private property.
It’s true. Germany gave back hundreds and they’re now rotting away in the cellars of a slave trader.
I got one on eBay!!!! And since most of us in America, Jamaica, are mostly Nigerian, with a little bit of mali , this is our history. Even if your dna test names small states on the border of Nigeria, back then it was all the same place . Sme with Mali. If gou get mali, and senigal , Gambia. Tht all just the mali empire. Fake borders just got made.

👍
I’m glad these beautiful pieces are safe and well cared for where they are. I would hate to see them end up like the massive Buddha reliefs in Afghanistan.
You're IGNORANT Nigeria is NOTHING like Afghanistan 😂 Nigeria is the wealthiest country in Africa with bullet trains, industry a cultural business CENTER on the continent. You clearly have no PASSPORT 😂
Are you kidding or what?
Loan lol jokers that's an offer I would refuse
Which colonialism?
The initial British Colonialism in West Africa lasted for over 100 years, not to mention they're still meddling 🙄They BURNED DOWN BENIN CITY. The city was an ancient beautiful city. In the 13th century a Dutch architect went to Benin and sketched it. He was blown away by the beauty and ingenuity. The houses had doors & walls covered with intricate wood carvings of scenes of daily life & nature. The stolen bronze panels of battle scenes and court life were gleaming polished, surrounding the palace walls. It was magnificent he said it was the most beautiful city he had ever seen. It had the longest earth worked stone walls surrounding it, longer than the Great Wall of China. Google it, it's online. The British were jealous violent thieving BEGRUDGERS that blew up the walls and burned the entire city down and STOLE the art keeping it in their museums, REFUSING to give them back.
@@lf1496 well to be fair, Benin refused to abolish slavery when the british asked them to, and when Benin kept raiding their neighbors for slaves the british intervened. to keep the practice of slavery dead the british stayed... and also took a bunch of stuff
@felix that is pure b*llshit. The conquerors will always try to make an excuse in the hopes that people like you buy them.
@@randmusings149 The kingdom of Benin did capture and sell slaves for centuries you know...you can live in denial about Benin's past (and many other African kingdoms) but it wont do you any good.. clearly Europeans bought slaves, but the market for them existed before they ever arrived on African shores. be mad all you want it won't change the past
@@sullafelix649 this is an intentional lie and you know. Invasion 1897 happened because of the almagation of Nigeria and the oba of Benin was an obstacle to them.
Lol, "art"
Lol "Male"
