- I found this Vintage Mid Century Modern Mersman End or Side Table in the Trash and decided to Restore it. In this furniture Restoration video, I will remove the legs and hardware, strip the old furniture finishes, Sand the entire piece, replace the laminate top with veneer, and finish using Minwax walnut gel stain, General Finishes Arm R Seal, and Howard Feed and Wax. This video is for those who enjoy watching furniture restorations and makeovers, but will also offer tips on how to make money flipping furniture. This table still has the potential to be flipped for a profit. You don't want to miss this transformation.

This may sound silly, but one of the reasons I enjoy your channel is that you clean as you go. Your workspace is so neat. To me that indicates a great care for what you do. This table turned out to be a stunning "trash find." Thanks for sharing your talent with us. 💕
Wow. Thank you Carla. Drives me crazy to work around messes

I hate messes too. I worked with someone for a couple summers. I had to set boundaries (she couldn't use my paint brushes as she used cheap and ruined everything). I know she was upset because I was always cleaning our work space... I guess she realized she was a slob. 😏
Disorganization, sloppiness and not taking care of equipment drives me bonkers.
@@miss_sunshine25 Same, same, same. I can't work my magic under chaos. Lol
I have ZERO restoration aspirations myself, but I enjoy watching your channel because you are the most consistently GOOD restorer I've seen on TH-cam. Your format is peaceful and you're not gimmicky: you don't need to pretend to saw off your hand or try to squeeze yourself into a drawer for viewers because your work speaks for itself. This is another unexpected winner...
This comment made my day. Thank you
Seen some of your videos and decided early to subscribe. I'm one of those Asmr people, your voice is very soothing and you're steady with your work. It's really relaxing to watch ☺️
I saw in one of your videos that some trolls are around, and that's not more than you might expect. Delete them and block them, you don't need to handle them.
I also understand you're a health care worker, and I see you sometimes mention mental health issues and how you can deal with it by doing things like refurbishing or similar. I don't have the space, but it's inspiring non the less.
As a person with some mental health issues I now got your channel to binge on, and I'd buy you a coffee if I can find out how 🤗
Greetings from Norway 💖
Welcome to the channel! Barry
A Mad City Modern vid is the best medicine against anxiety.
This means so much
I can’t believe how beautiful a crappy cheap end table turned out! The veneer really classed it up!
Thank you Patti
I actually got excited when I saw you had posted today. I look forward to your restorations. You do such a nice job on videoing different angles at different speeds and I especially like your sense of humor showing brass mouse next to a trap and paint next to your newly veneered top. You bring these neglected pieces back to dignity and class. I love your work.
I have always enjoyed your detailed feedback. So glad you picked up on my dry humor
🤭🤣🥰
I can’t imagine that that piece looked that good when it was brand new. Great work!
Thank you Jeanne
I'm glad you rescued that little mouse from that trap!!! 😀
It was a close call : )
There are no better TH-cam furniture restorers/flippers than you and Angie from Transcend, for much the same reason - just a nice calm voice not trying to ramp up fake "excitement" with anything shouty or hyper, and whatever fillers you add are quick, understated, humorous, and don't get in the way of either the video or the information. I've already binged watched all your videos so will just have to be content to wait week to week to see what comes next - while I'm trying out some restoration on small pieces myself just to get a feel for it! May you make many more videos and may they all be hugely successful. Kia ora and aroha from New Zealand...
You have always been so supportive, making the very few negative comments from trolls seem non-existent. I have so much to learn but I am passionate about this and sense that you are too. Can't wait to hear about your challenges. Barry
Спасибо Бари.Столик просто чудесный.Твой труд пошел столику на пользу.Ты ,как отличный врач вернул его к жизни.❤❤❤❤
Thank you again
well done and such a simple and pretty piece, the wood and restoration you did just makes this shine. I love that you save these pieces and bring them back to life. Excellent job :)
I can't drive past them : )
Really was surprised to see the sheet of walnut veneer. It’s the perfect solution to a problem I’m having restoring my late Victorian vanity for my youngest daughter. I’m so glad u have this u tube channel. It’s enjoyable & so helpful. 😊
I about died laughing when you made the joke about painting.
Aside from sharing a similar aesthetic, one of the reasons I love your channel is that you come across as genuine, present, and grateful. I admit to being too snobby & passing on Mersman in the past but this transformation gives me reason to reconsider. Great job!
Glad you enjoyed this : )
I'm amazed at how good that table ended up looking. Nice work.
Barry I love your videos, they are entertaining, educational and it's wonderful to see the end result too. I will probably never flip furniture myself, but it's nice to know the process. You have a calming voice which makes your videos very relaxing to listen to. Thanks for the videos and wishing you tons of success always!
This comment is so encouraging. I can't thank you enough for the support. Barry
Dare I say these piece is more beautiful then the original.
Thank you, Sharalee.
Barry
Trash to treasure is my absolute favorite. I always wonder how the original owner would be surprised by the beauty hiding in a piece they threw away. Stunning makeover as always, Barry!
I wonder that as well!
Really beautiful! Glad the bunny survived. The 🎷 was a nice touch..
Thank you. I enjoy playing the saxophone
Thanks, again, for the quiet and interesting DIY. II really like your quiet voice and although I usually dislike background music, your choices are always elegant and easy ont the ears.
Thank you, Wanda.
Barry
Well done!! Glad you saved this little table from the mid 1900s.
Thank you
I love the focus on being environmentally conscious! I finally bought a carbide scraper because sanding discs (+the energy use of the sander) and chemical strippers are indeed more wasteful. Sometimes I get a little obsessively concerned with the aerosol sprays, too. 🤷🏻♀️
And really, I can’t believe what some people throw away rather than donate or post online. (Granted not everyone has consistent online access, etc…)
Also, beautiful job and thanks for sharing!
Have you used the scraper yet?
I really liked this - keeping something from the landfill and making something beautiful out of it. The walnut veneer was a great idea.
Thank you Janice
I can’t believe how you made this cheap, tacky looking mass-produced piece of furniture into such a beautiful work of art! It went from something you’d expect to find in a run down trailer house from the 70s into something you’d find in a curated midcentury modern collection! Fantastic work!
Thank you Billy!
I don't live in a trailer but it might be kinder to not reference people that may be poor or less fortunate. Most people are 1-4 paychecks away from being homeless. Just a friendly reminder.
@@debbiefox6846 I grew up in a trailer, trust me when I tell you that I know what I’m talking about when I speak of rundown trailer houses. I can and will speak from experience all day long. That was not a judgment, it was a statement of fact.
Beautiful table, again, thanks to your talent!
I respectfully disagree with your assessment that this table was cheap and tacky. IKEA...THAT is cheap and tack. This charming little table will out last- HAS ALREADY, outlasted the press board crap on the market. The quality, design, lines of this piece are classic and timeless. That's what makes it worth restoring. And I believe it will sell quickly. Stunning execution.
I would love to see you have all your recreated furniture used to decorate a house. Thank you for your beautiful talent and your gentle heart
Thank you so much for this
I love these restored pieces. I am doing more and more but I’m alone and sometimes the pieces are just to heavy for me to maneuver! I’ve gotten dollies to help so where there’s a will there’s a way!
That's why I showed a small table. I think most people can handle a project like this. I hope to hear about your future projects. Thank you for the great feedback. Barry
Keep some tools in your car, so you can do some disassembly wherever you purchase it if you need to lighten it or fit it in your vehicle.
@@Suz9006 Great idea.
To add on to Susan’s great suggestion about keeping tools handy, I’d specifically recommend keeping short handled screwdrivers and if you’re experienced, a small rubber mallet to gently tap pieces apart so they fit in your car.
@@alexandra_sa_lazer Transcend furniture gallery did a great video on tools needed to start out and she showed what she brings in her car full time.
Surprisingly I used walnut veneer in my todays video😂😂😂😂seriously how do we do the same thing so often 😂 the finish is on point Barry. Lovely piece 👌
I am watching your video in a few minutes. Can't wait for this one. I laugh because you're right, we keep doing similar projects without even knowing

I did a woodworking class during my undergrad at UW Madison so this really tickles my brain and is helping me remember some things. I have a chair to restore that I want to get to this winter. Here's hoping I can get myself back into it!
Let me know if you do
The walnut veneer on top makes the piece look very high end. Great job.
Thank you Jenna
Another great restoration, Barry!! Thanks for saving another piece of furniture from a landfill! I always donate anything thing that can still be used.
Hi Mario. Thank you
We found a vintage green fiberglass swivel shell chair bar stool thrown out at the landfill. Not sure of the maker, but we unashamedly took it. Needs a little love, but I was shocked to see it thrown out. So glad to see your beautiful rescues!
I love stories like this!
I so enjoy watching some restoring a product to "like new" condition, whether it's a piece of furniture, a car, an old house - whatever. Such a shame that so much gets wasted these days. We live in a throw away society, unfortunately. Young people would much rather go out and buy new, rather that maintain - let alone restore things. Thanks for your videos! Hopefully they might inspire people to not toss things so easily.
I spend a lot of time watching others, so I understand the joy it brings
And I do enjoy your voice - it's calm and quiet...
Thank you Sue!

You did such a lovely job on this piece. It really is a Trash to Treasure sort of restoration. I especially like the blend of quietude and voice over narration. It's beautifully balanced and your explanations are so informative, I immediately hit subscribe. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. Thanks.
Thank you for this great feedback! Barry
I'm glad you didn't kill the mouse. The desk looks amazing.

I am becoming inspired to troll the streets looking for furniture to rescue! I guess it goes along with my pit bull rescue - sort of. Love the utility of that workbench. Think I will order one for myself. I am becoming comfortable with using new walnut veneer thanks to you. The MCM piece I adopted with a laminate top, however, I love as is. Reminds me of a MCM coffee table I grew up with that could stand up to all types of food and liquid abuse. As always thanks for your vids and sharing.
Would love to hear what you find!
Hello Barry. I don't think I've ever commented on your channel. I used to gravitate to painting furniture videos but recently found that I enjoy your work. I live in LaCrosse/LaCrescent area so you are not far...I might need a day trip to Mad city resale shops! My kids are into a more mcm style so if I find something suitable I can rely on your tutorials for assistance. I admire your dedication to giving back. Donating to charity etc. It makes the rest of us feel good about supporting your channel and wish list.. That is a fine but dwindling character trait. All the best. Patty K

Beautiful save! Something I’ve been wondering for a while is how do you identify the different kinds of wood? I would LOVE to see a video on this! Thanks for all you teach us. ☺️
I will try to remember to add this in a future video. Great suggestion

That's pretty awesome that you had dash cam footage to add to the story. I like the idea of roadside rescue and once again you have done an amazing job restoring that end table. I've driven through Madison, WI once on my way out to the middle of no where Iola, WI for a classic car show a few years back. Being from TX it was a cultural experience for sure haha but man I met such nice and wonderful people out there. I look forward to seeing what you rescue next!
I've been to Iola for the show. The only other reason most come up this way is for the Air Show
A friendly hello from Leipzig, Germany. With your videos, I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and they make you want to try it yourself.
Thank you for watching, Martin, from Germany.

When you sat the container of paint down on the tabletop, I sat stunned, my mouth dropped open in disbelief, and my gum tumbled out onto my lap. That was a good one! 😊 Love the final look! I learn most of my wood knowledge from watching your videos so for that I thank you for sharing that with us. Can`t wait to see what you come up with for the Ugly Duckling challenge.
Hi Pamela. I hope you don't think it was an evil trick, but your response to it just made my day : )
Lol he got me pretty good too with the paint trick🤣 leave the painting to us Barry lol. Don’t worry tho whenever we paint a vintage piece we try our best not damage it when sanding just in case someone like you wants to restore it 😉
Of course it was evil Barry, but pretty darn funny! Your sense of humor keeps people thinking. 🤣
Thanks to you I have started using scrapers to remove finishes rather than stripper, and it works great! I have severe workshop envy, though. I have about 10 square feet in my garage to use, and I have to put everything away after every session so I can get my car out.
@@nancykaminski8600 ahhh the struggles of a small work space 😅

Great restauraion! loved the finished product, this charming good quality table! and also the music so subtle in the background ...
Thank you again! Barry
That Mersman end table came out beautiful. Question, isn’t it possible that hardware is non magnetic but not brass. I’ve had that happen. What would the base metal be?
That's a great question. I've had the opposite happen. Pieces that are plated will be magnetic
Maybe aluminum, led , tin all possible for the Era I think??🤷♀️

What a beautiful piece. Superb restoration.
Another great job! I’m glad the mouse survived.!
Hi Caty : )
A lot of others would have painted for the unfortunate "shabby to chic" fad. Yuch!!! YOU, HOWEVER, have the vision to see the potential beauty of the wood and in your restoration process, also upscaled the piece by respecting the beauty of the wood and enhanced it with a fine job of veneer work. It's a pleasure to watch your respectful restoration and upscaling to turn this into a truly beautiful piece of furniture!!! My hat is off to you and I've subscribed to your channel. My hat is off to you and all others who take discarded items that would only pollute the environment and tax our landfills and give them a new lease on life.
Many times old furniture is much better than the "junk" made today.
We bought several 1940 Kittinger pieces (reproduction Chippendale style) for a fraction of what new pieces would cost. They are SOLID mahogany and we are so happy to have them rather than being discarded at some point by someone else.
Keep doing what you do! 👍
