I think the most powerful of the these 500 strokers were over 60 bhp! I saw 3 GP's at Hawkstone, and they were always televised, can't remember when motocross was last on TV :( Golden days.
Loved that production KTM 495 getting the holeshot. Looks like it was shot out of a cannon at the start. Three of the top 5 are KTM 495's at ~ 4:53. Awesome short stroke big bores - 93 mm piston - that's almost 4" diameter!
Brings back memories, for those that dont know the hill went straight up where they turn left, there was a shear sandstone face at least 7ft high. Bomb hole changed as well since last time raced there.
@jhareng Four of us went to this race (I was just 14). We walked the track on the Friday and you're right, the only way to climb the hill was to use your hands as well. A tuly awesome track back then. Too sanitised these days.
My “15” KTM 300 has 8,000 miles (500 hrs) on the odometer with boxes of cross country and scramble trophies to go with it. KTM comes Ready to Race off the showroom floor with great reliability, Honda hasn’t stepped up their game in a long long time. Most of us all love Honda and would go back whether 2T or 4T, but they’re just not at the same level of quality.
@XXNERVEXX am pritty sure a 1980 cr 250 could be a 2011 crf 250, its only because ama want our money they only allow 2 stroke to be half the cc as 4 strokes.
@50337andy Just where they turn left at top of that hill, it then suddenly went steep carried further on around 20 yards. Easy course was to turn right half way up the hill seen at start of video. Last time raced there was New Years Day 1977 & 78 on a works British Rival. Used to work next door until last year that bomb hole and main jump are now really shallow as well.
@tjordulf The bike were not heavy as shit, the bike were very light at 224 lb dry weight they are much lighter than the new 4 strokes. Some of the bikes had to add weight to them during check in time. Honda was famous for this. The new 4 strokes have to use special light metals just to get their weight near what these bike weighed. Why do all the young bucks think these bikes weighed so much. Before FIM and AMA set weight rules the factories had 400 cc bikes that weighed 190 lb.
@ben2339 I also remember watching this race as a teenager, In fact had it on VHS for a few years. Always remembered the bit where the commentator points out that Daves son Kurt was in the lead. Listen, don't wish to start one off those typical youtube slanging matches, but is it just me, or does anyone else wonder if you time travelled Bubba or Ricky or Travis or one of the top UK riders into this race on their current bikes, how would they do in comparison?
Pretty sure I was here with my father, grandad and brother..Im sure I picked a tare off up from the track that was Eric Goebers..the kid, he was only 5'6 I think... hence the nickname.. he died just a few years ago by drowning..trying to save his dog!
You idiot, emission laws killed the 2stroke, today's fuel injected 4 strokes are as light as the machines back then, with less need too change pistons and rings, which is a 2 stroke downfall, you don't know what your talking about.
Malcolm Nuttall Remember he also wrote that comment 8 years ago. And pretty much every 250f from back then is currently in a scrap heap, meanwhile the 250 2 strokes are still faster and still running strong.
9 minutes "Highlights". takes more than 4 minutes of "commentating"(a Cricket Commentator sounds more excited than the one !) and watching the Starting Gate being loaded. only for the "Highlights" to stop after 2 Laps ! piss-poor !
Cos, even though they're on steel framed, non USD forks, heavy as shit bikes, they are still haulin ass. 500cc Two strokes, I mean, come on! I Satan road a bike it would be one of those! Incidentally, interesting to note the bars had virtually no rise on them and look quite laid back, like my old Husky CR125 twin shock, air cooled. Wouldn't it be great to watch this video and suddenly see Carla pull an epic whip over one of the big jumps, or even a back flip. No, thats just silly now!
I had just turned sixteen and rode 48 miles on my Suzuki AP50 moped to watch. Fantastic stuff. Bring back the open class I say!!!
Nice one
I was the kid who overtook you on my rd50 with big bore kit and micron
2 up with L plates ?

What a great track! A true test of the rider and the bike.

Malherbe, Jobe, Geboers and Thorpe, four of the all time greats.
Noyce all day!
Nothing sounds as good as a 500cc two-stroke.
American Supercross used to race 125 , 250,& 500 classes in the same event it was so cool
Looks like a great course!
Brings back memories, for those that dont know the hill went straight up where they turn left, there was a shear sandstone face at least 7ft high. Bomb hole changed as well since last time raced there.
Watched this on the old bush tv, our first coloured set.
fell out the tree at the top of Hawkstone Hill ! - Unbelievable spectacle
Remember watching this race as a kid, great track! Where have the crowds gone these days?
Wow, nice racetrack, fast, bumpy as hell, nowhere to rest for a second

i was there great day
Lucky Guy...
Kurt is 19 and leading the moto on a 500cc ,very unforgiving 2 stroke.Sure, there's no 150 ft triple jumps but the track is fast.Cool I think.
Very skilled
Kurt still races today in California. Still fast maybe faster today then 84
I was there that day great times
Как будто это было вчера ... .
Как быстро летит время ... .
listen to the sound of those engines, mean so mean, endless power
Brilliant memories. Have you got more from Race2, like the bits when Jobe was doing the double?
Back when the starting gate was full of Honda’s and not ktm’s 😔😤

Maravilloso.

Where's Malherbe? I saw him on the starting grid.
I GREW UP ON THAT HILL BEST PLACE TO BE
That last hill looked the scariest.
@XXNERVEXX am pritty sure a 1980 cr 250 could be a 2011 crf 250, its only because ama want our money they only allow 2 stroke to be half the cc as 4 strokes.
Skip to 4.00 mins if you wanna see a race. Love this old vid though! 😃
Thorpe said he started in 3rd gear with a 4 speed box

wow, been a loooongtime since i’ve heard the “rort” of some 500 2Ts....can we please have them back
Bons tempos
Epic track, just like Farleigh Castle.
Ruskeasanta is the best!

I read somewhere that mechanics would place sections of drive chain into airboxes to get the bike up to minimum weight
@50337andy 125's only around 8 to 10 made, i had two plus a works.
There was a 4 stroke thumper using a Honda engine.
@ben2339 I also remember watching this race as a teenager, In fact had it on VHS for a few years. Always remembered the bit where the commentator points out that Daves son Kurt was in the lead.

The suspension on a modern bike would soak up this choppy stuff way better
Wher was mayson wear

Never knew that
You can see the difference between Kurts bike and Dave's, it's a shame, Kurt was doing great, Dave's Honda has got some go in her though.
May as well have a race with only the top five racers it seems like nobody else in the race really matters.
My dad had a bike like those
Fantastic , shouuuuu
@jhareng British Rival, was that a 250?
Ahhh back when anyone with a job that wanted to race could afford it..
@broady42 Don't think it was caught on video!
they should do gp"s there again
apik tenan
always remember the toilets been pretty rank
suzanne801 sorry ur memories weren’t of better things 😂
i wish i born then. back when companys didnt try and make us buy heavy overpriced hunks of junks called 4 strokes, all because they want our money.

Chris Carter and Dave Nicoll (Kurts Dad)
And the air turned blue.
Some crowd
