Thanks for sharing these photos mate! I've lived for about 6 months in Droop St during my year in Mrlbourne. I miss a lot this place as well as the surroundings. Even though the junkies and above Vic avarage crime rates are quite bad things in Footscray (a housemate had this laptop stolen by one of the junkies there during a home theft) it's still a good place to live due to its lower rental prices, proximity to CBD, nice shopping areas and multicultural environment.
Nice upload. As an expat now (and nascent train/tram spotter), I look at Melbourne with a mix of bemusement, sentimentality and awe. It is a paradox that it is now too expensive to move back and buy a place there, even rent a place in areas like Footscray, that have a perceived potential value whilst at the same time associated (wrongly or rightly) with junkies, thieves, violence and a some kinda vague bleakness. I think Melbourne was lucky to keep their trams. Could easily have gone the route of Sydney and most cities in the western world where the boom in private motorization, dirty politics and well-intended but bad ideals conspired to wipe out most tram/trolley networks. (and brought the Victorian Railways to its knees in late 70s early 80s)
Thanks so much for this bro. It's so great to see Footscray in another time, it gets you thinking when you stroll through it nowadays. Plus, I learned something new, I never knew a tran existed in those areas! Great video.
Thanks, the only time the doggies played in a grand finals ('54 & '61) the trams were running, may need to drag an X1 past whitten oval behind a tractor and see if they can turn their form around. Glenn
My grandmother went to Sims for her weekly shop. She used to say she was going to the 'terminus', I never questioned it. Now I know while. I assume a tram terminus was on Barkly St , near Sims?
Hi Glenn, I’m wondering if you would be willing to share the source of the Russell St tram at 0:37? I’d love to track down a print of the photo. Thanks so much
When in 1962 they thought the queen might come through Footscray , Nicholsonstreet got a proper tarmat . Before that the street consisted of wood blocks and to keep them snug on their place a inch thick tarmat was layed on top . I remembor these blocks being used for the heating in the fire place of the class (hyde street primary school) A pity the Post office hasent been shown it had style I used to live on the opposit side But in all thank you Wilhelm Braak Netherlands
very fascinating mate cheers. Trams up Barkley and down Williamstown rd. anyone know where it ended on that road? must've been before Yarraville but probably wrong
I worked with a guy for years and he use to call it "Footsacray" LOL This was a 5'3" system run by VR or am I confused? As I have come to expect Glen a very crisp and professional presentation....
G'day Trev, The Footscray system was operated by the MMTB therefore it was 4 '8 1/2", the VR system ran from St Kilda Station to Brighton in 5'3", yet when VR operated the Sandringham to Beaumaris line it was built to 4' 8 1/2".
glennofootscray Ahhhhh OK.... It was that in the mid 60's a mate and I were out Footscray way and we rode in 53 from the explosives factory down to the terminus, and he said that that was an ex VR broad gauge car so I naively assumed ...
Tramcar Trev The VR (52/53) cars were regauged for the MMTB and spent most of their lives on the #82 Footscray-Moonee Ponds run, due to the original saloon doors were too narrow for city loading/unloading.
Sorry GCCMelb, I was riding my fixie to the some bespoke brew house where you drink from jam jars while stroking our beards while sitting on milk crates, the last time I checked, Sims is west of Summerhill Rd, therefore West Footscray, The Whitten Oval is west of Gordon St, which is adjacent to 'West Footscray' railway station, so therefore may be considered West Footscray, do you work in real estate?
glennofootscray Sorry but according to Council maps, Whitten Oval and Sims is in Footscray. So is the Footscray Hospital in West Footscray by your reasoning? Not a Real estate agent but I hate them and property developers. www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au/Page/Images/cou_suburbs_map.gif
Great memories of the Footscray Tramways 1921-62! Bought the DVD The Footscray Tramways from Train World in Brighton today!🙂🚉🚋🇦🇺

Just came across this video. That photo of the Barkly Theatre brought back memories, we went to several Saturday matinees there as kids in the 1950's.
Fabo Glenn. I am sitting here in Cyprus and so appreciating the work involved in setting this up
Who would have thought trams in Seddon.

There's memories. Saw these at the station, etc, as I waited for my 82, in the early 60s. Thanks a lot.
Thankyou! It's so interesting to see the old juxaposed with the new. I wish there was still a tram going down Williamstown road.
As a volunteer at the tram museum in Hawthorn I appreciate this video.
As a migrant it's pleasure to know the history of my local area.

Great work - enjoyed watching that.
I love the comment at the end about trying to avoid being hassled by junkies!
Well put together - thanks for sharing.
I had no idea the trams ran up Sommerville road to Williamstown road, or that they ran past the western oval on Barkley Street.
Thanks, I knew of some of the trams but not all of them. Cheers
Wow, fantastic. Brings back memories. Thanks.
Thanks Glen
Great stuff 👍

Why did they get rid of many of the tram lines in Footscray?

Nice video didn't know footscray had a large tram system
One complaint it would've been nice if you had background music

Sorry Hipster Glen of Footscray, but both Sims and the Whitten oval are located in Footscray. 3011
