Aglaonema pictum tricolor care and propagation

  • The Aglaonema dictum tricolor is probably the most famous and sought after aglaonema in the contemporary and international plant community. This is due to its beautiful camouflage patterned leaves with 3 shades of green. They are extremely easy to care for and propagate, and I spill all the beans in this video. As usual, I propagate this in soil and in water, showing you updates in a few months. In the course of 18 months, this plant has given me so many babies. I just find aglaonema a joy to have around and to propagate and share.

    My girlfriend and I successfully germinated 60 seeds. We soaked them first, then peeled the red fruit off, the rub the clear layer off the seed, then put them in sphagnum moss in a snaplock container in the hot water cupboard untill roots started appearing two weeks later. About a month from then we potted most of them, about 10 took an extra month in the sphagnum moss. They are all under a grow light now forming their second leaves.

While the (#2 ) other one is healthy but it doesn’t show a lot of variegated leaves, it has a lot of dark color. Also they both 1 1/2 years old from seed.

    Awesome video and I love your curiosity. Just one teeny tiny point if I may. I'm a scientists and do experiments for a living (it's fun actually) but if you want to get the most of your different setups you really need notes... I know you have the videos and can get all the info but often you say you forgot how many cuttings you had, where they were placed, how did you treat them... Take notes! It makes a world of the difference. I hope you don't take it the wrong way, I'm not criticizing or accusing you of lack of organization, it will just really help with your projects. I tell it to all the students I work with too.

    What happens if I leave the flowers and let it go through it's natural cycle? My new leaves seem to be getting smaller compared to when I first purchased it. It gets low/medium indirect light. I water once every 2-3 weeks with fertilizer.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Keeping the flowers on will cause new leaves to be small as most energy is expended on the flowers. I might increase light a bit, and also increase watering if you increase light 😀

    • @onlyplants

      Yepp you can. If you look carefully you should be able to see the eyes 😀 or if in doubt plant the single node cutting facing up instead of sideways but be sure not to overwater it

    • @onlyplants

      Propagate. Thats the best way to save it if the main stem is already mushy. Check the roots if they are good, see if you have available nodes below the cut that can sprout new branches

    Absolutely dont plant it in the soil too deep... it will rot. Mine got leggy and I didn’t want to chop it up so I just planted it a bit deeper in the original soil (which is mostly just coco husk and perlite) watered it and went on holidays. 6 days later when I came back, the plant looks weird, so I took it out: ALL roots and most of the stems under soil were rotten off 😩

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Whoaaaa I guess water less if you add more soil. They do hang on to moisture longer.
