The 5k retina 2015 model enters into the extra-high resolution category with it's gorgeous display, but does the machine still have the power to hold its own using modern apps? Join me as we dive into this machine and review my experiences with it!

    Yay a Canadian! stumbled on your channel , and I’m happy you’re Canadian because there’s a question I want to ask you and I’m Canadian as well and it has to do with our currency. So with the release of these new M1 Mac which by the way I have the 2020 MacBook air M1 and it’s a beast of a machine. It handles everything I throw at it including my 4K editing. BUT I really want a iMac and I don’t want the small ones at 24 inches I think they are and I don’t want to wait and pay a boatload of money for the release of the new m1 in the 27 inch. So my question is if I could get a 2019 base model 27 inch 5K iMac for $1000 on Kijiji do you think that’s a good deal? Now I can’t stand hard drives or fusion drives so if I get it I would be hooking up my Samsung T7 1 TB SSD to it so it could boot up and load everything from there. Now it’s cheaper than an Apple refurbished but it is Kijiji so that means it doesn’t have a warranty with it but let’s just say everything is in mint condition like he says it is and there’s nothing wrong with it do you think it’s worth $1000? I was going to get it no hesitation thinking I could hook up my M1 MacBook Air to it and use it as a monitor but after doing some research that’s not possible with the 2019 model. Please let me know what you think. Thank you

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure target display mode was removed with the 5k iMacs so you would need to use a capture card but that's going to look and feel pretty awful tbh.
      $1000 is a reasonable price but I think you'd be better off buying a really nice 27" display and then pick up a mac mini or studio or something to that effect, or just hook up your air and be happy with it. Maybe add a laptop cooling pad and call it a day?

    • @Nore613
      @Nore613 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CanadianComputerCollector didn't know it would look horrible hooking up the air to the iMac I thought it was just going to use the screen iMac has as a display for my air. Good to know.
      As for the Mac mini option that's way too expensive. I priced everything out. With a decent 4K display that's at least 27 inch at Best Buy and then buying speakers a mouse a keyboard and the Mac mini came out to about $1500. Don't forget the Macbene is $899 here before tax we don't get the good American prices us Canadians get fucked when it comes to pricing. Because even if you do the exchange rate we still pay more. And as for being happy with it I am it's an amazing chip the M1 but I come from having a desktop Mac all my life I had the 2012 for God knows how long and then the 2019 5K iMac but I thought it would be a good idea to sell it a few years ago and invest in a laptop instead where I would save a bunch of room in my apartment getting rid of the chair the desk the huge table the iMac. Anyway I made a huge mistake like I said I've had a desktop all my life started off with a PC in the 90s when the Internet was making funny noises at boot up and tying up your phone line lol that got a iMac in 2012 and Had Macs since then. Anyway the point is I'm really missing the desktop form I should have never sold my 2019 iMac so now I'm looking at some on Kijiji and I found one for $1000. Now I asked if it was worth it because personally it doesn't sit right it doesn't feel right paying $1000 for a i5 8 gig ram with a fusion drive now with the m1s out. Well not that it doesn't feel right it kinda doesn't feel right, that's the problem I'm confused it doesn't feel right a little bit $1000 feels too much but at the same time it feels OK because you get that huge 27 inch 5K screen. So I was thinking it would be completely worth it if I was able to use the guts of the M1 chip but apparently I can't or it won't look nice. Anyway I would feel more comfortable paying $800 for it I keep trying to get him to budge but he won't so I don't know about $1000 I'm torn I don't know what to do. Because I will end up getting one and so far the sky seems to be the cheapest but the cheapest is $1000 and that's not cheap

    Seems like it's more than enough for a student to do his university work right? (Office Apps, few Safari Tabs at the same time, normal browsing, etc.) How long will they be "usable" for this group of people you think?

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes definitely should be enough. Hard to say how long it'll be usable for but that depends what you use it for. If you don't need to game, this thing will be relevant and capable for many years. Once it stops getting os updates you may have to consider an alternative OS but until then, you've got nothing to worry about.

    I'm currently on the fence about replacing it either with a Mac mini or take the plunge with a 14 inch MacBook Pro. I'd like to save money and maybe wait it out for a year or so, but I have the 2014 5k iMac launch version 3.5 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2 GB with only 8gb of ram. It has always been laggy and slow when editing media. I want to start editing 4k video, it already lags and freezes just with safari and iMovie open at the same time. I personally didn't buy this configuration, it was gifted to me at the time of release or else I would have gotten one with a better GPU. In my opinion, this base version is so underpowered with the M290X and the horrible fusion drive, not sure if it's worth it to upgrade it and start tinkering with it. Well thanks for your thoughts on the iMac, Take care.

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I wouldn't recommend an SD card as they're typically low quality flash memory with poor read/write speeds and questionable durability. I would go with an external SSD that has a dram cache.

      M1 would probably be better for that. Look for an m1 iMac/MacBook. The used price of an M1 MacBook air is hard to beat. You'll just have to accept the miserably small internal storage and get used to using external SSDs.

      I'd recommend you look for used apple silicon at that price. Even an m1 MacBook Air will outperform it and they're getting quite affordable on the used market. Heck an m1 iMac will run circles around the Intel ones now as long as the software works on Apple silicon that's the route I'd suggest. -Stac

I order second hand renewed imac late 2015 upgraded with these specs: 32gb ddr4, i7 6700k 4.0 ghz, r9 395x 2gb ddr5 aand 512gb ssd. I will use that for tech support because i need a big screen, the question is: This machine is will be good for tech support, any desk, openvpn and etc? And what if the updates stop, the machine is continues to work with these programs or the programs will stop working after many updates and will be unusable because on windows if u use w10 and use this u will can use the programs and etc but i don't know whats the matter with the imacs...? Sorry for my bad english but i think u will understand me what i mean. Thanks in advance!
    I will be happy to answer my questions, great review but i have some fears.. just to know what to do, return a Imac and buy a windows pc with big screen or keep the order for imac because its have very very good specs for me.

      @CanadianComputerCollector  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi I am so sorry for the late response. If you are merely doing tech support on this machine, I think you will have more than enough power. 32gb of ram, 6th gen i7 6700 and a SSD will keep it snappy. The only place you might see some bottlenecking, in my opinion, might be on the 2gb GPU, but that would only be for things like gaming or heavy graphic usage. It sounds like you have a great machine for the work you are doing!

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly you should be fine when it stops receiving updates, at least for a long time. It won't be infinite, but I run Mojave on these machines as it is the last version that runs 32 bit apps. The only issues you will find is after about 5 years or so, you might not be able to download certain apps directly from their websites, as new versions usually only run on the newer versions of MacOS. That said, people often provide links on Reddit or other forums for finding older versions of apps to run on older versions of MacOS. You do open yourself up a little bit to some security issues, but they are not likely to change your life. Just be smart about where you go online!
