In 1976 I was 18 and a newly minted SCUBA diver when I saw Jacques Cousteau Undersea World episode on Truk Lagoon. It lit such a fire in me that I took out a bank loan and booked a trip by myself to Truk and Palau (quite the arduous undertaking given no internet). Truk was everything I had imagined it would be, just an incredible undersea environment that still grips my consciousness to this very day. I had an old Nikonos III still camera took a lot of pics (all requiring manual F stop and distance settings and NONE of which can hold a candle in quality to todays vid and pic capabilities). Saw my first sharks...my first everything...The wrecks the artifacts the history the bones...there's no museum, like it in the world. Haven't been back since but always think I will be someday.

Truk truly is amazing. And if you have the chance, check out the dives at Bell Island in Newfoundland. We just finished filming them and will have some stories here on Wreckwatch soon.
