      Haha, yeah that was fun to film and match up. Trying to make a dull topic interesting to watch. I wanted to be thorough on something this important. I have my own ideas of what makes you successful and they've worked for me so far but, I thought it would be good to hear from some people on the other side of the table. Thanks for watching Allen and thanks again for hanging out last night!

    Man, You've just shown exactly what I wanted to know about how to get into the construction market there in North America!
    I have a sandstone quarry here in South America. I have experience with portable machines (angle grinders, ground cutters and demolition hammers) and a medium duty truck (I wrote 'truck' because I have only one, for now).
    I hope to get my Green Card soon and then I'll reach my greatest dream!
    Thank You so much. My name is Fabio.

    Bryan Thanks for that! Much needed. On your CV I noticed you got your degree in 2009 which is cool but this leaves a gap between that time and 2017. I've always been advised gaps on CV's are a massive no no. I am assuming it was most likely irrelevant history so you took it out I am just curious if an employer ever asked you about the gap and if so what was your response? Or what would you say?

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! The general rule of thumb is that you want to list the three (possibly four) most recent jobs on your resume. Everyone expects that a gap will form between your current jobs and when you get your resume as you progress through your career. That being said, let's say I did a small one or two year stint in a position that was completely unrelated to the industry and left that off of my resume. If I were asked about what I was doing during that time I would explain that the job didn't seem relevant to the current position I was applying for and offer to provide that employers contact information if they wanted to call and verity my employment. That will put them at ease that you weren't doing anything to raise red flags during that gap in your resume.

    Hey man I have a question. I remember in one video of you saying you used to operate construction equipment in the field and you eventually started working for a construction equipment dealership. Do you always need a bachelors degree to get into sales like what you do? If you do can you give me some other opportunities to work as at a company like yours?

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Sam, sorry for taking a bit to reply. Not all dealerships require a degree and I would argue that field experience is far more valuable than a degree. To get into sales you'll need to have a pretty charismatic personality and be pretty outgoing. A good working knowledge of the equipment overall will help you go a long way. As far as specifics to the machines that dealership sells, they will train you on that. If you are looking to move into that side of the business I would start looking at job posting boards. On your previous work experience you'll want to focus more on tasks that were detail oriented, required follow ups and multitasking. These are all good traits for a salesperson to have.

      @@DieselandIron Haha!! But a serious question about the paper part. Do you feel it is better to do it the old fashioned way in the HEO industry- that is, a good printed resume and show up and hand it to the decision maker in person? With the way times are, everyones nervous, and wanting emailed versions- but does anyone read emailed resumes?

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@codyapplegarth Great question. In the world of Covid this is a tough question to answer because it really depends on the contractor as to whether or not they are accepting in person visits. My personal mentality has always been, if you can physically get in front of someone, do it. It's really easy for someone to cast aside an email or a piece of paper they've received from someone without a face. When you are able to hand that piece of paper over in person, wearing a nice button down shirt, having put effort into your appearance, you make an impression. Even if it's a quick handshake and a "nice to meet you," that still makes you a person in the mind of the owner or the HR rep. If they are sorting through 20 different resume's, you now have an advantage over the other 19 guys that emailed it in. Thanks for the question Cody!
