$6000 house in Japan: Week 8 Renovations

  • The interior renovation is 90% complete and now it’s just a matter of finishing touches.
Until now, I’ve spent roughly $4000 USD on renovations. The bull of the costs have been on wood, tools, and paint.
I’ve saved a lot of money because I’m doing this work myself. My dad also came to help for the last 4 weeks and it’s made my life much easier!
I’m very happy with how this has come along within just 8 weeks and the cost of the renovations. Of course, this cost doesn’t account for the 12 hour days I’ve been putting in with not only building but sourcing, picking up, designing, and creating this space.
    Loving the project!

    I am Japanese.
One of the reasons this house was so cheap was that old-fashioned toilet.
Many Japanese people give up on buying one after seeing that toilet.
But you have updated the toilet.
Not only that, you have renovated the inside of your house to make it look very stylish and clean.
The fact that he was able to accomplish this in such a short period of time is an amazing feat.
I think this house is worth $20,000 on the Japanese used house market.

You don't ever have to feel bad about how you choose to live in your own home. Just because it is how it was done does not mean it is the best way, or the best for you. I think it is beautiful what you have done so far.

Just incredible. I spent 3 months on a ski scolarship in Gunma ken 40 years ago and have never been back to Japan since (even though I have promised myself every year I would return, life got in the way!). I would love to visit your beautiful home and be hosted by you for a ski tour of the area, hopefully I can make that happen (as I am currently spending around $100k for a similar reno of my own home in New Zealand!) We would never get sign off if having done any electrics or plumbing without necessary consents and permitted workmen). Your place looks truly amazing, keeping a very traditional Japanese vibe with western comforts (I slept on futon for my 3 month exchange and never did get a great night sleep!).

Absolutely wonderful! you made a great job. Artistic and comfortable. Japanese and yet it is your style. Love the slide doors and the white painting plus the kitchen and the mountains on the wall :)

After seeing the first video after purchase I was afraid you'd ruin the house. Nothing to worry about any longer. Stellar job!

The stainless steel bathtub is awesome. Look into using Resin for the grout and the rocks, so you get the best of the look and its waterproof. Super easy to mix and apply. Japanese toilets are magic. Good job on the swap.

Your home is beautiful and peaceful! Please add some decent bedside lighting, and a lamp in sitting room for those who like to read. You’ve done such a good job!💛
