    Lyrics:
    - Hors d'Oeuvres -
The judge sits on his great assize
Twelve men wise with swollen thighs
Who never ever told no lies
Whose minds were ever such a size
Whose lives were ever such a prize
Whose brains bred answers just like flies
Whose answers stalk their thoughts like spies
Whose lead ball through the courtroom flies
To rip a hole clean between two eyes
    That never ever wore disguise
And never ever saw blue skies
Who quickly lived and now slowly dies
    Who closed unopened otherwise
Well you can lead a horse to water
But you're never gonna make him drink
And you can lead a man to slaughter
But you're never gonna make him think
The critic rubs his tired arse
And scrapes his poor brains strains and farts
And wields a pen that stops and starts
And thinks in terms of booze and tarts
And sits there playing with his parts
And says I'm much too crude and far too coarse
And he says this singer's just a farce
    He's got no healing formulas
He's got no cure-all for our scars
He's got no bra strap for our bras
And our sagging tits no longer hold a full house of hearts
And you know what, I don't think his little song's gonna make the charts
Well you can lead a horse to water
But you're never gonna make him drink
And you can lead a man to slaughter
But you're never gonna make him think

I agree. Stormcock is a brilliant album, and always has been, Roy Harper's best, only 4 sublime songs that flow through a series of almost classical acoustic guitar movements. It's innovative and different. Nothing has been done since that compares to the instrumentation or lyrical vocalization on this record. In fact, it's probably a rare moment of genius. You know how these moments come from time to time with some people, well this is probably one of them. It hasn't been repeated, and maybe doesn't need to be. This was a rare event in folk rock music history, and a legacy that Roy can be very proud of leaving for the people who appreciate this genre.

This album went on the deck just before bed most nights from 1972-4. Rocked me to sleep in the best way. Special place in my heart.

I have been a fan of Roy Harper since 1970 and I own all his early original releases on the now sadly lost Harvest label. Stormcock is probably his greatest Album, well thats my personal opinion. Its just so fitting that his best works were on Harvest but he never got the same accolades as the likes of Dylan even though his material is vastly different he for me was up there with Dylan. I saw him perform at Manchester's Free Trade Hall in 1972 and again in 1974 at the Manchester Palace Theatre. Always entertainingly funny as he connected with his Audience. He was equally interesting with his stories between songs and as acomplished live as he was on his Albums. I've even bought Stormcock on CD just to preserve the vinyl. He performed songs from his Valentine LP in 1974 probably the closest he came to Dylan and paid tribute with North Country. Sadly Roy never got the same global noteriety as Dylan but I always felt he shunned fame. His Lifemask LP is another piece of genius....along with Flat Boroque & Beserk his folkiest offering I feel but equally beautiful. I have an original copy of Come out Fighting Ghenkis Smith on CBS. I could talk about this English treasure of a man for hours. I'm now 73 and after over 50 years of collecting music his work still makes the hairs on my neck stand up. I wonder how many people are aware that his friendship with Jimmy led to him playing with Roy on Stormcock and I think he played on Jugula also and of course Led Zeppelin recorded Hats off to Roy Harper on Led Zep's 3rd Album

Don't know if he ever said it, but I am pretty sure that this was Thom Yorke's (Radiohead) blueprint of singing, painfully touching, the falsetto singing goes beyond singing (and my english speaking abilities :-|). The whole record = one of my island's 10. Greetings from germany!

Thank you Roy. I know you are no stranger to pain, and this album has saved my life. There’s nothing else I’ve ever listened to that has made me feel the same way I do listening to stormcock. Thank you for recording an album that made a difference for somebody 49 years after it’s release.
