  • Just what is the ‘Mystery Flesh Pit National Park?’ An explanation of Trevor Robert’s fictional multimedia project and the massive speculative lifeform at the center of it.

If an underground organism of unfathomable size were unearthed in the United States, you might expect widespread panic at the horrifying discovery - or expect the U.S. government to block off the cosmic horror from civilians. You might not expect the entity to be turned into a theme park marketed towards all ages.
But that’s what happened with the (thankfully) fictional “Mystery Flesh Pit National Park,” the name given to a creature of indeterminate size and origin that was nonetheless turned into a tourist attraction. Just the sort of thing to explore at this spooky time of year.
    Now, let’s begin our descent…

I mean, this could make a great film, somewhat akin to Blomkamp's District 9.
It would be shot in that rather documentary-like style and would be a satire of American highly capitalistic society where one can sensationalize, market and monetize almost anything.

  • @kraymerman
    @kraymerman ปีที่แล้ว +367

I prefer to think the actions of the superorganism in the 2007 disaster were spawned more from panic than anger. It's just an animal.
What probably happened was that it started chocking because of the water flowing into it's lungs, so it attempted to cough the water out, but the beams holding its throat open and the visitor center aloft held its throat open and still, affectively drowning the superorganism. Not only that, but Anodyne also administered the superorganism industrial drugs in an attempt to knock it out, but all that did was make the thing vomit. Most of us know what nausea and vomiting feels like, and it's not fun.
The poor thing must have been terrified. It's just minding its own business, sleeping, but then all of a sudden it wakes up to find itself downing, with a sudden terrible nausea, and it can't move its throat muscles; of course it would start to rithe and seize in panic, it has no idea what's going on.

One thing that this video also slides past is the fact that the creature starts to chew as its waking up, so it's actively trying to break down and eventually swallow the obstructions in its mouth/throat which also crushes everyone inside for 18 hours following the vomiting. It also doesnt mention that the only reason people (excluding some workers and campers) were inside the pit and LVC was because the heavy rain cancelled a fireworks event so the park compensated ticket buyers with an exclusive visit in there well after hours closed for that place. The water pump wasn't faulty (admittedly rusted because its humid inside a giant living being), its that the park had too much going on between mining crews and usual activities that happen after park close along with the additional power use in the LVC that shouldnt happen under normal conditions.

I mean, I will say, something like Yellowstone is pretty full of unique hazards. Besides being eaten by a bison or trampled by wolves, there's also a possibility of things like:
    1. A giant Earthquake makes it impassible.
    2. A caustic, boiling pool of primordial soup explodes all over you.
    3. Severe winds cause your tent or whatnot to rip out of the ground and tumble across the plains (happened to our kitchen tent).
    4. You fall into one of those boiling prismatic toxic pools, take one drink, and die within minutes.
    5. A deadly cloud of Hydrogen sulfide kills you in your sleep.
    6. A small eruption occurs directly under you and you're launched into the stratosphere.
    7. A huge eruption occurs under you and the entire caldera collapses. You're dead before you realize what's going on. Your relatives on the other side of the country live somewhat longer but may die to the resulting famine.

It's more intentionally funny at times, but the beginning premise is quite similar- a whole crew is working on something outside, some type of construction, something where they're digging in to the ground. One guy finds this white gooey substance, just in the ground in large quantities. Naturally, he tastes it and discovers that it tastes pretty good. The substance ends up being collected and sold as a frozen yogurt type treat in grocery stores and in kiosks, in commercials. Turns out, when people ate the Stuff, it ate them right back, because it was a sentient, dangerous creature, and not mystery yogurt from the ground. Would highly recommend checking it out.

Came across this belatedly, and it's a good intro to the wonders of the Mystery Flesh Pit. Two things to add though:
    1. The Flesh Pit is not only being monitored to this day, but *actively exploited* via mining, albeit figleafed as "research".
    2. It is heavily implied that the Flesh Pit is able to lure organisms in, where they eventually mutate into forms that serve its biological functions. Which, again, is still happening as people find themselves compelled to enter the pit even though entry is forbidden. The Marrow Folk may have entered far in the past in like fashion.

Here’s some organisms I like to believe dwell in the pit:
    The sloth crawler
Size: 6 feet high, 12 feet long.
A descendant of the prehistoric ground sloths which dwelt here during the ice age, this bizarre organism represents a example of how the pit forces evolution to ocurr. It has the long claws of it’s ancestors, however it’s back limbs are much shorter then it’s front limbs and it has grown a long tail in order to better navigate the pits deeper areas. It has a very light coating of hair, and feeds on large growths of fungi and other plant fauna, possibly why it still heavily resembles its ancestors. It’s extremely docile, and seems to be quite fond of visitors during our post 2007 expeditions. The only other change is that it can mimic sounds, likely in order to avoid predators and scare off others when it wants to remain hidden.Disturbingly it can also imitate humans and machine sounds, although it was never encountered before now, raising the question of how it knows them.
    The dragon dweller
Size: between 10-15m long, possibly larger
The largest non insectoid carnivore known to date to dwell in the pit, this giant creature was first discovered in the 2011 expedition, feasting on a dead gastric whale by the far south shore. It is clearly descended from dinosaurs, appearing to descend from Albertosaurus which roamed Texas during the Jurassic. It has changed considerably since then, to the truly terrifying form that still exists in the pit.It has kept its scales, uniquely for reptilian dwellers of the pit, however they have grown into thicker spikes. It’s mouth is truly terrifying, having gained a chameleon like tongue which can extend several metres to grab prey hiding in small spaces. It has also grown wings, defying all logic as it is clearly too heavy to be able to fly according to the laws of aviation. It uses them to travel, occasionally venturing to the collapsed former visitor centre where they have been seen inspecting it, and in at least three cases taking metal for apparent nesting. The wings are like a bats, while it has gained four arms which are also considerably longer then the prehistoric ancestor was.As of the last expedition, we have found the giant skeleton of one, which measured 25m, meaning it could be considerably larger then we think.
    The Gastric Goliath
    Size:10m long
The Gastric goliath is a enormous fish species, which based on recent dna samples appears to be Dunkleosteus, having likely existed since the permian era inside the pit. They have the same armoured face and bony body, however their natural armour has now become so thick it is actually composed of a layer of what appears to be sediment on top, which helps shield it from the acidic conditions. It has evolved to be able to walk on land and breathe air for limited periods, appearing to be able to do this for up to several hours. It’s front fins have also become arms and hands, disturbingly appearing to be mammalian, which it can use to manoeuvre itself. It dwells in the great Gastric sea, where it seldom comes inshore to where the visitor centre once was, and even then only during the time of year no one would go inside.A last feature is their ability to mimic light, with a retractable proboscis positioned just by its tail.It seems to be particularly good at mimicking human lights, and we found human clothing in one dead fish, suggesting that some of the poor victims of the 2007 disaster may have encountered it.

I have a theory about the giant bacteria. My theory is that instead of being true multicellular life forms these organisms are colonies of bacteria merged together. Those bacterial colonies might also fill a variety of roles. Ones that digest organic matter,Ones that clean out foreign materials to keep the creature they reside in healthy,Some could be parasites that feed on the creature itself, and others that are simply harmless hitchhikers that neither harm or help there host.

Wow I’m so glad that you cover MFP, but I was a little disappointed that you didn’t say anything about Yosemite causing 2007 incident. I understand sometimes you have to cut things out of videos in order for Them to be more succinct and do better. I mean if you started to cover all the evidence relating to Yosemite National Park causing the 2007 incident this video would be way too long to get picked up by the algorithm. Keep doing what you're doing it's awesome.

Imo Henderson is overrated, the only memorable thing that he created was siren head which was rather terrifyingly unique. This park on the other is impressively well done and unique, the amount of creativity that went into the parasitic creatures and their living environment is great, not to mention the extensive lore of the business and how the creature itself affected us (and how we affected it).

Glad to see two of my favourite channels collaborating - love your work, EDGE and CA ;) Now, at first I felt a primal panic upon learning the creature's size/bizarre biology. However, the more the tale developed, the more I felt increasingly pitiful of the organism's quite literal exploitative (and quite possibly painful) exploration. As many have already said , this would make an excellent sci-fi/horror film/series. Gl
