    Emergency vehicle can be one of the following:
    • ambulance
    • police vehicles
    • fire engines and fire trucks
    • search and rescue
    • volunteer responders (fire fighters, search & rescue, and others
    Sirens on emergency vehicles are loud, and these vehicle travel at high speeds. Therefore, it is important--and as soon as possible--that you locate the vehicle and take action to move out of the path of the emergency vehicle.
    Emergency vehicles are the proverbial "fly in the ointment" of driver's road tests. Driving is a dynamic task, and emergency vehicles can appear at any time.
    During a road test and all other times, drivers must pull over to the nearest edge of the road and stop. If you are waiting at an intersection and blocked in by other traffic, simply stay where you are. Often times the emergency vehicle will deviate into the other lanes of traffic to move through the intersection.
    If a driver does not pull over for emergency vehicles during a road test, it is unlikely that she/he will be successful.
    In other words, move to the closest shoulder: if you're driving in the right lane, move to the right; if you're driving in the left lane, move to the left side of the road.
    If you’re at an intersection or roundabout, you may have to turn the corner of proceed through to make way for the emergency vehicle.
    And keep in mind that emergency vehicles often travel in groups - so if there is one, there is often going to be another.
    The only time that you don't have to pull over for emergency vehicle is on multi-lane highways where the lanes of traffic are divided by a concrete barrier or median that would make it impossible for the emergency vehicle to traverse onto the other side of the road.
    Good luck on your road test!

    I'm An Ambulance driver, thank you for this reiteration, I believe 90% plus of drivers in my area would fail a road test. Most try to out run you, or simply refuse to pull over.

      Hi I had a question so, I drive pass the fire station all the time and it's right on an intersection where in this instance the emergency vehicles have to drive through the on coming traffic lane and into the lane I'd be in. The light turns green and other drivers move and then the emergency vehicles role out of the station and I'm kinda in the way of all this. I braked to a stop and put on my flashers but hadn't realized there was another one coming up behind me and began to move but repeated what I did above and let them pass as soon as i realized there was another. Did I mess up? There were cameras but I wasn't pulled over.

      I’ve had that very scenario on a bicycle with a Greyhound bus. Angels saved me. It’s very important for large vehicle drivers to signal a minimum is 3 times, look & look again before moving over to guard against this kind of crash. Cheers Rick

      @smartdrivetest Hello Rick! I've seen on your website that volunteer firefighters may use green lights. That is not true in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Prince Edward Island, as they use red lights.
      Saskatchewan- Red lights and sirens for Volunteer Firefighters private cars (can claim emergency exemptions)
      Manitoba- red lights and no sirens for Volunteer Firefighters private cars (can claim emergency exemptions)
      Prince Edward Island- red lights for volunteer firefighters private cars (cannot claim emergency exemptions)
      Alberta- Green lights and no sirens for Volunteer Firefighters private cars (no exemptions)
      Ontario- green lights for Volunteer Firefighters private cars (no exemptions)
      Quebec- green lights for VolunteerFirefighters private cars (no exemptions)
      British Columbia- no lights or sirens for Volunteer Firefighters private cars (no exemptions)
      Newfoundland and Laborador- no lights or sirens for Volunteer Firefighters private cars (no exemptions) (red lights and sirens for chief officers)

    If you are at an intersection with a green light. Stop and don't move.
    The emergency driver has a much better chance to decide what he's going to do if everybody else just remains stationary.
    If.... And only if you can do so safely...turn to change lanes to tour right..or even turn right to get out of the way.
    If you are at a RED light. Just don't move.
    Your are under no OBLIGATION to move anywhere.
    The laws do not give you the right to go through a red light. You might be able to change lanes or even turn right. But never through the red.
    Sometimes there is not right action.

    Another great video. May i just add that in many jurisdictions Volunteer responders also have lights. Technically courtesy lights, they can be all different colours and we would all greatly appreciate vehicles yielding to us. Not legally required in most jurisdictions, but still a good idea.
    Unrelated, do you have complete series available?

    Very informative video! Thank you for contributing to the community. I'm sure there are many others who find your videos extremely helpful. However, I am still a novice driver and have a few questions for you. I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge as I am new to this but that is why I am asking.
    Say you're on a highway in the left lane closest to a median strip but you're unable to pull into the right lane and there are barriers preventing you from being able to pull off to the left. Is your best bet to come to a complete stop? Or are there alternatives to this? And how would I deal with this same scenario but on a busy street in a city centre?
    Thank you in advance!

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Kal - thank you for your comment. You don't have to apologize for being new to driving and learning. Asking questions is a sign of wisdom. The best advice is to slow and move to the right as much as possible and as quickly as possible. It is advised not to stop on a busy highway. Often other traffic in the right lane will be moving over to the right, so you can simply slow and move over to the right as well. And if you can't move to either direction because you are stuck in the midst of traffic, it is best to just stay where you are. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Please I need your opinion: a friend of mine failed her driving test due to an emergency vehicle -ambulance- that was approaching from the other direction of the road, but neither sirens were on, nor flashing lights, nor driving fast like in an emergency, the ambulance was just passing by normally; my friend just reduced the speed and turned right but didn't stop completely and she failed the test because of this. What's your opinion? Even with no sirens/flash lights on must pull over and stop completely?

  • @grazz7865

    I see a whole bunch of various situations and questions. To answer all, you have to get out of the way as safely as possible. That might mean blowing the light, moving left or right, turning left or right (even if you had no plans on turning-but guess what? You can make a U-turn and get back on track to save someone’s life), or just staying put. All depends on the situation

    I have a question. I was on a multi lane street at night with nobody else on it. I drove past a curve and saw an ambulance but I didn’t have enough time to stop completely so I only tried to slow down. I went into the farthest right lane I could go into, leaving about 4 lanes in between me and the oncoming Ambulance. I saw the camera flash at the intersection, am I getting a ticket for not stopping completely even though there were multiple lanes in between me and the ambulance?

      Hi hichem ben jazia - that's an excellent question. If the vehicles can't move to create a path for the emergency vehicle, as you describe - then remain stopped. The emergency vehicle will make it's way around the vehicles, but if vehicle are moving all over the place, then the emergency vehicle has to dodge other vehicles, so best to remain stationary. Thanks Cheers Rick

    I was at an intersection in the left turning lane, on a red light. Two fire trucks were approaching behind me with sirens and lights on. I knew they were going to be turning left because a fire truck had turned left a few moments before I got there. The green arrow to turn left started flashing and I decided to go, but turned into the far right lane to give them space. Was that the right thing to do or should I have just stopped and not turned? In my rear view mirror it looked like the fire trucks were coming directly behind me in the left lane, I made a split decision to get out of their way.

    So say Im at a 4-way intersection. Im thr first car stopped at a red light trying to turn left in the second turning lane (the outside left lane). I then hear sirens, and finally see the emergency lights behind the line of cars behind me. The emergency vehicle is trying to turn left, but he cant drive over to the other half of the street because it blocked off.
    Is this a situation where I would go, even tho the red lights are still on?
    What if the other side of the street was blocked off by just a large grass mound... and not a line of trees to where the emergency vehicle cannot drive through it?

      Hi xiholliday - it's not your job to second guess the emergency vehicle. In most instances at an intersection, you best option is to just stop. Or if you're at the head of the queue, go around the corner and stop. See this vid too: th-cam.com/video/A45ZB-qXTco/w-d-xo.html Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick

    I like his point, but he made a serious mistake. If you are sitting at an intersection (red light), The PROPER thing to do is NOT move. Moving can cause an accident. The ONLY time this is different is if the emergency vehicle can NOT go around you

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Scott Campbell - Thank you for your comment. In some cases your are correct; however, in other instances it is better to turn the corner to clear the path for the emergency vehicle. As with so many skills and abilities in driving, there is not just one right answer. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    If we are in a city, and an emergency vehicle siren is heard, but we cannot figure out where the hell is the vehicle, and also im on the far left lane...and all lanes have traffic. What should I do for both of my problems? Do I come to a complete stop OR go more left near the center line? I am confused. I have many more questions as IM a new driver. How can I call or email you?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Dipin Dhingra - Thank you for your comment and query. If you are confused as to where the emergency vehicle is, watch the other traffic. Often the other traffic will move if the emergency vehicle is behind you. Also, move to the closest shoulder. You don't always have to move to the outside. And some times you just have to stop. If you have further questions: rick@smartdrivetest.com If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    40 mph, 3 lanes going, 3 coming and a center turn lane. I'm on the inside lane. Ambulance turns into the oncoming lane, only about half a football field away. Do I stop? I hit my emergency flashers n stopped but the other 2 lanes didn't.

    what if you are on a two-lane road and the emergency vehicle is on the right side, but you are on the left side. What would you do then? (there is no barrier and you and the emergency vehicle are heading the same directon) . Thanks

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Cailyn Bond - Thank you for your comment. If you are in the left lane, move over to the left as far as possible and come to a stop. There are going to be times that you can't get to the right or the left, and stopping may be your best option. Be sure that you check the traffic to the rear because other drivers may not see or hear the emergency vehicle and not expect you to stop. Don't move over for an emergency vehicle at the risk of a crash. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    I’m a new driver and have been out for lessons with my instructor a few time and this never happened. The first time I drive with my husband, a police car is approaching from the opposite side of traffic on a city street with 2 lanes of going in either direction. I’m in the left lane wanting to turn left at the next intersection. I see the police car coming and signal to pull over. NO ONE in my lane or the right lane beside me stopped! I couldn’t believe it. I braked early and stopped in the left lane with all the cars behind me and beside me zooming past. I’m lucky I didn’t get rear ended

      Hi Sarah F - Thank you for your comment and great story. While on a highway, if an emergency vehicle is approaching from behind me, am I to pull to the right lane a completely stop? Or can I pull to the right and slow down, allowing the emergency vehicle to pass?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Dave Marishka Fair - thanks for your query & comment. Most of the time on the highway, you don't have to come to a complete stop. Often, if you move over to the right and slow, the emergency vehicle will be past by the time you get slowed down. And be sure that you watch out for other vehicles because they can run you down and not slow or move over. So getting back on the highway or freeway can be tricky at best. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Wait even when their is no traffic I have to stop. I'm on 2 way street I see emergency vehicle. I will gladly stop to let him by but no one is in front of him I have to pull into a ditch????????

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Team Element - thanks for your comment and query. No, you don't have to pull into the ditch. You simply have to pull off the road--to the closest shoulder--and slow or stop. Often the emergency vehicle will be by you before you get your vehicle stopped. If you're on a road test be sure that you bring the vehicle to a stop as soon as humanely possible, otherwise it's an automatic fail. Once you get stopped, then it's that task of the emergency vehicle driver to weave his/her way through the traffic. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Hi Rick, thanks for the great videos. I’m confused. If driving on a road/main highway, if an emergency vehicle approaches behind you, do you turn to your right lane and stop or if you’re on the right lane, do you slow down and wait till the emergency vehicle passes you

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Azam Sorathia - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your query. If you're on a highway, I would suggest getting over to the right lane to clear a path for the emergency vehicle. In my experience, stopping puts you in conflict with other traffic because often other traffic doesn't stop, so I would council you to slow. If you're on a road test however, be sure to stop. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
