Was BIG SEAN Left Behind His Peers? Stunted Growth Music

  • Today’s feature is an artist I truly have enjoyed in the past and I would be remiss not to mention that. When the idea of doing a video about Big Sean came up, I thought long about what that would sound like, as part of me feels Sean had a very successful career considering you know how he got started in one of the most pure hip hop ways, rapping on the spot for a well known artist so well that he invites you to the studio and offers to sign you on the spot. That itself never happens anymore in the new social landscape, and he’s managed to have a pretty successful career thereafter. He’s put out 5 albums in the 2010s and they’ve all done well. 3 platinum and 2 going gold. For his rap class, the beginning of the 2010s, he was one of its leaders at some point and I remember he, Drake, Kendrick and J Cole all supposedly being the future of and rap as we once knew it, always compared to one another and often pressured to battle one another for the throne. Throughout the decade Drake and Kendrick have seemed to separate themselves, along with J Cole who isn’t that far behind as the cream of the crop from that era, and Big Sean just kinda seemed to have left the race. I see Big Sean as the 2010's version of Fabolous. They blended in more than they stood out and their music was par for the course. And another thing: I can't recall seeing another rapper get outshined on his own track as routinely as Big Sean.

Sean is nice but he lacked the forward progression and direction of his peers. His Drink Champs pretty much proved that was due to Kanye using him for his own agenda and keeping him stuck under him. Wayne let Drake surpass him because he had nothing to prove anymore while Ye can’t let go of that top spot

It’s really close for first with Drake and Kendrick but you can’t deny the impact drake has had. Since 2010 you haven’t turned on the radio and not heard a Drake Verse. Kendrick gets second for his consistency with his body of work and lyricism. Every album Kendrick has put out is very well put together & meant to be listened to from start to finish. He is the story teller of our generation. Sean gets third for his rapping ability and ability to entertain us and hold our attention when he drops. Cole is fourth because he’s boring. And wale is 5th because he just hasn’t stayed in the race like the other 4. This is just my opinion as someone who has listened to all of these artist and consider them the greats of my generation. They all make fire music and I’m glad they all came out when they did. We definitely needed something fresh in that time. The trap rap was so played!

Big Sean’s problem was he was a bling era rapper stuck in the 2010’s. Big Sean’s best asset as an artist was that he was a radio hit artist. However when the mid 2010’s rolled around Trap started becoming the new radio rap this was bad for Sean as he wasn’t trapping. Pop Rap stopped becoming about “look at all these things I have” but instead “look at the illegal things I did to get these things I have” So a rap radio artist who doesn’t trap, can’t get introspective like Kendrick, can’t sing like Drake and isn’t as creative a Kanye what do you have left?

I agree with the path of Big Sean career....non music news involved him in who he was romantically involved with at the time. He was a play boy rapper then turned to motivational rapper but nothing crazy to report if it wasn't music related. Detroit was his best mixtape/album to me but I will never not listen to a new Big Sean song because he has always made solid music and can legitimately rap well.

I think the issue with Big Sean is that he never really stood for too much. And thats not to say he can't rap or makes bad music ( even though lyrical I think he's behind the big 3). Big Sean to me had more like basic level lyricism to be considered a lyrical rapper. And as far as his overall brand it didnt stick out too much. For example Drake was the pop star rapper he could do it all, Kendrick was the conscious rapper that talked about social and political issues and J Cole was the conscious rapper that connected to everyday people. Those 3 also have their own brands that they're connected to as well. But Big Sean it just seems like his brand and what he stood on wasn't much of nothing. He's a good rapper that can make really good hits. And when he wasn't making hits its seems like the majority of is music was to an extent "motivational rap". Like he never goes too too deep on certain topics or is associated with certain people and things to the point where when you see him or he's mentioned you automatically have an idea in your head of what he is and what he stands for as a rapper.

This was a fair assessment of a career from one of my favorite artists...I'll add this tho...it's a damn near herculean feat to be success in the rap business. Especially when that's pretty much all you're selling. The fact that even his recent music gets as much praise and sales as it does proves that he lives in a very small section in the game. Sean is, and has been successful at being a rapper through at least 3 eras. As a Detroit native I couldn't be more proud. He didn't have to be a criminal to make it. Much love to the brotha...side note. I love this channel. Peace

He's very talented and well intentioned, he inspired Drakes' 2009-2010 flow (although technically Jay Z did the super dupa flow first) but Sean is kinda cheesy in some way.
