I love Oscar Shumsky's playing! He was a true violinist - he had the perfect, optimal sound. His bowing was so beautiful - he took such care in creating and initiating the note or phrase that the bowing took care of itself!
Thank you so much for this touching interview with Eric Shumsky. I studied with Oscar Shumsky at his home in New York from 1968-1971. Musically, they were the most important years of my life. In so many ways, Mr. Shumsky was immensely helpful. As long as I live I will always remember his intellect, patience, and of course, the great inspiration he communicated through his playing and through the sheer force of his personality. Forty-seven years later, I still think of him almost every day. I have tried many times to get in touch with Eric, but without success. If you might possibly help by sending my best wishes to him, along with my email - mail@ronaldhurwitzphotography.com I would appreciate it very much. Or, if you have a phone number or email address for him, I would be very happy to know it. Thanks again for the lovely interview. Ron Hurwitz
Interesting. Many great violinists weren't thrilled about after concert receptions, including Kriesler. Apparently Kriesler, when asked if he had to attend a reception after the recital, was told, "no." He then infamously said, "I'll halve my fee." I heard this from my father, don't know the truth of the story, but it illustrates how much some dreaded the after concert reception.
