How China became a superpower: 40 years of economic reform | DW News

  • 40 Years ago China opened up its economy to the rest of the world. A move, that ultimately turned China into a global economic powerhouse, second in GDP only to the US. Today China looks back over four decades of economic reform that have made it one of the most powerful economies in the world. In his speech at the Great Hall of the People in the Chinese capital Beijing Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to press ahead with economic reforms. But he also made clear that Beijing will not deviate from its one-party system or take orders from any other country. His comments come as the United States demands more transparency in trade relations with Bejing.

The Western world had a positive view of China when it was just the world's factory with all the sweatshops, but has started viewing negatively as China stands neck and neck sitting on the same table, talking about what they gain, etc. On the flip side. China is not going to let in immigrants or is not going to embrace globalization as the rest of the world has. China can be considered very restrictive. socially. China is making great progress within. You can see the progress to the standard of living. It is also helping out the developing countries in building infrastructure and lending where the UN and the world banks wouldn't. Good for them for helping each other! China is not particularly bending backwards to enrich the developed or advanced countries to further their cause of ruling the rest. I like their way of thinking. Honestly I do think the oppressed is rising to the point where the developed can get out of the way and simply watch, which is better than getting in the way or trying to get a share that would otherwise help the poor.

      You have to understand that as a developing nation, all countries will have large amounts of growth and will lift their people out of poverty, not to mention that China's poverty rate is still very high. America had just had their transitional period a long time ago, but now it is China's turn. But like every country in the past, as a nation transitions from a developing nation to a developed nation, economic growth slows dramatically, so don't conclude that the Western system is more flawed than the Chinese one due to this fact as China's economic growth is already in a phase of slowing down. When China finally becomes a developed nation, the worry is that without a lot of transparency, it may cause trust issues within the international community, and whether their intentions lie within themselves (as it has seemed more recently) than with mankind. I tell you this to encourage to look into the Chinese political system. Political apathy is more dangerous than the Chinese communist party itself

      @@captainusa2076 I'm not quite sure where you sourced your information, but I might have to add that the relative poverty in China and the USA are very different. In the USA, the relative poverty salary is around 5,600 USD per capita, which equates to about 38,000RMB. In China, 70 million of its population (about 20% of the population) lives under a yearly income of 2,300RMB ($376USD). So please do you research, it's extremely important to differentiate between relative poverty and absolute poverty.

    Deng initiated China's Opening Up and Reform in 1978, gave up comintern, restored all tradition and culture (so that my family can worship Buddha at home), kept a low profile, focused on economy development and improvement of people's living, set up Chinese characteristic socialism - a kind of hybrid of capitalism and socialism which is good for China since heavily populated!
    Chinese are forward looking and still already solved all border issues using "Give and Take" strategy with neighbors excepts India. Allied with China benefit all countries people!
    China wants to modernize first, then democratize. India just reverse the path. Which one is better we will follow which one! May see it in the middle of this century!

    Simply put :
    Mao: took land from land owners and made almost all land state owned
    Xiaoping: distributed that land by giving port county's to companies and allowed locals to have autonomy while building roads ports and bettering education system in china
    At the same time keeping China closed during a less "connected" era helped China not receive the criticism for not allowing labour unions etc. So china could allow foreign companies to exploit the populace
    Outcome : Eastern China's massive economic rise
    Who suffered : the people in 60s 70s and 80s
    Who benefitted : 80s after

    • @ex0duzz
      @ex0duzz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The people born in 60/70/80s had their life expectancy doubled from 30s to 60s+, and literacy rate went up from 0-10% to 80-90%. Lots of other things like infant mortality and infrastructure development, military(getting nuclear bombs/tech), defeating USA and UN in North Korea and successfully defending NK were massive achievements regardless of whether China was still poor compared to west or whether great leap and cultural revolution were disasters(which even the CPC admits).
      Those born in 60-70-80s would be living much better lives than if they were born in 30-40-50s. I mean they would live twice as long and the whole country would at least be literate and not all illiterate poor opium addicts and/or getting killed by Japanese and civil wars.
      There's a reason why Mao is still highly revered even considering al his mistakes.. And the above are the reasons.
