      Relax, they aren’t your usual Western names. It takes most people a while to learn Band-Maid’s names and nicknames, but there will come a day when you know them by heart.

      Interviewer: What’s the meaning of the name “BAND MAID”? Miku: I used to work at a maid cafe, and I thought “I want a band!” So it became BAND-MAID - maids in a band!
      Interviewer: How did BAND-MAID come together? Did any of you know each other before joining the band? Kanami: Miku was looking for members to be in BAND-MAID. I was approached to join the band, and then I brought my friend, the drummer Akane, with me. Then, Akane brought her friend, the bassist Misa. So the instrumental performers were all gathered through connections between musicians. After that, our vocalist Saiki joined through an audition.

      One hint for Japanese written with western letters (called "romanji") - it is phonetic so there are no silent letters and every vowel is pronounced the same way every time. English is so inconsistent, but with romanji "a" is always "ah", "e" is always "eh", "i" is always "ee", "u" is always "oo". So "Akane" is not "a-cain" but "ah kah neh". "Mincho" is a diminutive nickname; Kanami -> Kanamincho -> Mincho. Kanami is exceedingly polite, but Mincho sometimes goes a little crazy onstage, as you saw.

    Band-Maid always surprises. The fire breathing lyrics of "Hate?" incinerates to ash anyone who betrays one's marital vows of fidelity to them. Hate is perhaps even too mild a term as the song makes it clear that things have gone far beyond mere hatred into the realm of wishing for the total obliteration of even remembering the memory of that hated person. It's the dark side of emotion, but in context, it is a totally honest human response to heartbreaking dishonesty. Band-Maid always seems to advocate meeting one's problems in life with courage and the resolve to push through great difficulties with a clear eye and sense of purpose. The enormous emotional release blasted at the song's antagonist by Saiki would vaporize any mortal human standing in her way. Such is the power of a great song. Bravo for the lyrics.

    • @joeking6763
      @joeking6763 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I think Taylor Swift could learn something from SAIKI - and if I'm not mistaken that was her friend who had the bad experience not SAIKI. So what would SAIKI write if she was the one who had the bad relationship? After this I would think that a wrong move on a date with SAIKI would be like swimming in a Parana infested pool with steak tied to your swim trunks. 🤣🤣

    From an interview:
    Saiki: So, I watch a ton of 'The Simpsons', and the characters use a lot of foul language. There's scenes where the son, Bart, gets into fights with his dad, Homer, and he repeatedly says, "I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!" It's so much fun to say (haha).

      From an interview:
      Q: The title has a question mark, so I expected you had some feeling that might be hatred and would end up saying “I hate you but I love you”…
      Saiki: Not at all. Because I say “It’s meaningless” at the end (laughs). However, these lyrics were purely inspired by the music. When I listened to it for the first time, I had the impression that Kanami was pissed off by something. Like, she was irritated (laughs).
      Kanami: That’s not true, though… However, I had an image of explosion about it.

    I am in Tokyo for the first time right now, largely inspired by these amazing ladies. I actually had dinner 2 nights ago at @Home Cafe where Miku worked and came up with this brilliant idea. And it really shows where the inspiration for their Okyuji (shows) meaning" a serving " comes from. Saw them live in Nashville and best small venue show I've ever witnessed.

    On the "Duels" they usually have at least one per concert. At this one, they had I think 3, plus special intros and an Akane going full Gorilla with a drum solo.

    Oof. Okay, so you understand me.

  • @myeckwaters
    @myeckwaters 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    When the band started, Miku didn't play an instrument. When Saiki took over the lead singer spot, Kanami told Miku to buy a guitar and started teaching her how to play.
    Miku went and bought a Rickenbacker guitar because she liked the way it looked. On the "Thrill" video she had only been studying for a few months and was mostly just using the guitar as a prop.
    Here, ten-ish years later, she is not only playing a very solid rhythm guitar, but you can see her playing her signature Zemaitis "Flappy Pigeon" guitar.

    A little Band-Maid history:
    Miku (guitar and vocals) was working at a "maid cafe" (like a restaurant that girls serve you dressed like maids and treat you like masters) and decided to quit and form a rock band (not knowing much about guitar or singing) with the idea of dressing like maids. She found Kanami (lead guitar), Kanami suggested Akane (drums), Akane suggested Misa (bass), and later they added Saiki looking for a main lead vocalist. That's basically how they got together.
    The maid outfits are chosen by each one individually, and changes as they want. They call the fans "Masters and Princesses".

    • @jamesredman1263
      @jamesredman1263 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Masters and Princesses is how customers were addressed at the maid cafes Miku worked. Also they speak of a concert as a "serving."

    New subscriber here, nice to see another conscript to Band-Maid. After the Maidiacs and The Warning Army, you probably don't need another passionate fan base invasion, but if you want to continue the Japanese adventure, one word: LOVEBITES.
    All female metal band, with two of the best lead guitarists in the business. And they sing in English. Their fan base is the Wolfpack.
    Start with a recent live track from their official channel, Hammer of Wrath is a goodie. Their live productions are first rate quality, you can get to the MVs later. Enjoy!

    Band Maid is fun and catchy enough for the casual listener, but complex and innovative enough for the music theory crowd.
    “Don’t you tell ME” from the same show is what you’re asking for. And in my opinion, it’s a much better song, bringing more of their take on classic rock and post hardcore punk.
    This is where the Maids shine, in their songwriting and arrangements. Their back catalog has some of the best songwriting I’ve heard in decades.
    If you let us know which styles or elements you like/dislike, there are likely some specific songs that will be tailor-made for it.

One is a Saiki solo on piano but it’s the other one you want for a reaction. As you dive deeper into this pigeon hole you will understand why Maidiacs are so loyal to BAND-MAID.

    Band-Maid members are:
    Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 27 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
    Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 29 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR Spokes Pigeon! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room.
    Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 29 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
    Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 30 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
    MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 28 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

    the translation of the lyrics are a nice added level on top of the songs. But for the most part I enjoy the singing like it was another instrument, and don't really care if I understand the lyrics. Concentrate too much on the meaning of the words and you'll miss out on enjoying the simply amazing music.
