Manchester, Bolton, and Bury Canal : Clifton to Ringley

- This is a canal journey I made with Steven Parker (the founder of the Manchester, Bolton, and Bury Canal Society) in 2008.
We travel from Clifton Aqueduct to Ringley village to find out what remains of the derelict canal.

Thanks. This is one of those areas of the canal that I find quite forlorn. You have the big structures like the aquaduct which are still impressive, but then you have Rhodes Lock which is all filled in with old motor bikes and junk, and it's really sad to see it as it is now, and to see photos of what it was like in its heyday.

But your right it's truly amazing .. it's a very good design .. shame it's so damaged . Not saved one lock 👍

Very interesting, such a shame it has been allowed to fall into such dereliction. I spent many an hour with my old faithful Labrador Ghillie, walking along the tow path exploring the inns and outs. I chuckle at some of the names associated with this canal and areas such as Nob end, and the Nob Inn so funny these.

Thanks for your kind words. It's one of the areas of the the canal that seems to have changed the most, especially around Rhodes Lock.

90 years old. As a kid I lived at Molineaux Brow and the canal was open then. I remember it collapsing into the river I was a bout 8. And that was tthe end of it.

Your story is amazing. After this horrible lockdown I'd love to pop along with Steve and meet up with you at some point, and record some of your experiences if you'd be happy to do that. We've already recorded a miner who used to work at Ladyshore Collier,y and those sort of experiences are now rare and precious.

Isn't there someone trying to restore parts of this old canal? Does anyone know how far they've got, assuming they're still trying. And I once discovered a serious breach in the side wall of another part of this old canal near radcliffe which apparently happened in the 1930's and had never been fixed since but just left as it was and it was at a point where the canal ran at high level above a valley and the water had escaped through the breach and someone has since built a brick dam across the canal further along the route to contain water in the remaining section between radcliffe and bury which is now a nature reserve.
I filled those locks in driving the dumper on school hols when l was 9
